Abstract A new genus of Ectobiinae is described, Planuncus with the three new subgenera, Planuncus, Margundatus and Margintorus, containing species formerly belonging to the genera Phyllodromica (second subg.) and Ectobius (other subg.). New combinations: Pl. (Pl.) tingitanus (Bolívar, 1914), Pl. (Pl.) finoti (Chopard, 1943), Pl. (Pl.) vinzi (Maurel, 2012); Pl. (Margundatus) baeticus (Bolívar, 1884), Pl. (Margun- datus) agenjoi (Harz, 1971), Pl. (Margundatus) erythrurus (Bohn, 1992), Pl. (Margundatus) intermedius (Bohn, 1992), Pl. (Margunda- tus) krausei (Bohn, 1992), Pl. (Margundatus) maculosus (Bohn, 1992), Pl. (Margundatus) paludicolus (Bohn, 1992), Pl. (Margundatus) princisi (Fernandes, 1962), Pl. (Margundatus) striolatus (Bohn, 1992); Pl. (Margintorus) nicaeensis (Brisout de Barneville, 1852). A new Ectobius species from Morocco is described: E. hipposiderus. The new genus and its subgenera are compared with the Ectobiinae genus Capraiellus and the newly described E. hipposiderus. The morphological phylogenetic analysis suggests the following relationships: E. hipposiderus + (Capraiellus + (Margintorus + (Margundatus + Planuncus))). The appearence of a new cockroach species belonging to the subgenus Planuncus in Germany and Great Britain is reported; the hitherto known distribution of the subgenus encompasses Algeria, Morocco, southern Spain, and France. Species affiliation and provenance of the immigrant remain doubtful due to difficulties to separate the three known species. The possible reasons for the recent areal expansion of the species are discussed.     PAUL KNOTT Moroccan Climbing: Rock, Sun and Snow OroCCO fascinates me. It has a rich complexity, retaining an alluring M mystique despite being well travelled and documented. During 1998 and 1999 I was lucky enough to get a real insight into the country and its climbing through a post at the delightful Al Akhawayn University in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here I give a flavour of the rock climbing, skiing and mountain walking, all of them spiced with the cultural interest inherent in Morocco's mountain country. After three days' driving from the UK, I sped through dry limestone plateaux to Ifrane with its promise of sunshine and snow. I found myself sharing an office with Michael Peyron - Alpine Club member, Atlas guidebook author and Berber expert. Along with other companions, we escaped at weekends to explore the wealth of lesser-known mountains a short drive from the fairy-tale campus. We sought and found crags and mountains with European-style ease of access. For big, unexplored rock climbs one of my favourite places was the Dades Gorge. This was visited by Trevor Jones and Les Brown in 1990, but otherwise seems to have seen little or no climbing. Above Boumalne-de­ Dades the valley becomes strikingly beautiful, with its kasbahs and its unusual rock features (doigts de singes or monkey fingers) set amongst emerald green jardins. On my first visit we got no further than this; the downpour sent raging torrents across the road and stranded us at Ait-Arbi. We found the doigts disappointing for climbing. I returned some weeks later, to the gorge itself.

    Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

Summary: Cockroaches are claimed to be mechanical vectors of microorganisms such as intestinal parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This study was conducted to determine the potential role of cockroaches as carriers of parasites having medical importance in Van province, Turkey. One hundred and thirty-eight cockroaches were collected from different parts of apartments and houses between March and April 2014. All of the collected cockroaches were identified as Blatella germanica. They were examined for isolation and identification of intestinal parasites from external surface. The results showed that 66 (48%) of the cockroaches harbored parasitic organisms. Of these, 96.6% were protozoon and the remaining 3.4% were helminthes. Isolated helminth, species were Toxocara sp. (3%), Ascaris lumbricoides (3%), Trichostrongylus sp. (1.5%), Trichuris trichiura (1.5%) and unidentified nematode egg samples (3%). The protozoon identified during the study were Endolimax nana (7.6%), Blastocystis hominis (41%), Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar (16.7%), unsporulated coccidial oocyst (7.6%), Chilomastix mesnilli (4.5%), Entamoeba coli (35%), Giardia sp. (13.6%) and Iodamoeba butschlii (7.6%). In conclusion, Blattella germanica was found to harbor intestinal parasites of public health importance. Hence, awareness on the potential role of cockroaches in the mechanical transmission of intestinal parasites needs to be further investigated.

    HAMISH BROWN Climbing in the Atlas Mountains A Survey (Plates 24-27) magine a country with eighty per cent sunshine throughout the year, I grand mountain scenery, its rock climbing potential barely touched, all within easy reach, with no political hassles orcostly fees, and a lovely people. It may sound too good to be true but it all exists in Europe's nearest truly exotic foreign country: Morocco. The Atlas Mountains, which sweep across from north-east to south-west, separating 'the desert and the sown', offer a climber's paradise. Quite why the Atlas has suffered neglect by climbers from Britain is hard to understand. Perhaps the names are too difficult - there's no kudos in reporting unpronounceable climbs - or the information is hidden away in French publications. 1 Time the cat escaped from out of the bag. I spent a winter in the Atlas in 1965 and repeated this delight in 1966. Having gone there specifically to climb (Notes in AJ 1966) I ended simply hooked on the whole Atlas ambience and began to wander rather than be restricted to one area. The natural outcome of this was an end-to-end trek 2 in 1995 : 96 days, 900 miles and about 30 peaks bagged. Farfrom rounding off my knowledge, the trip introduced me to a score of new worthy areas to visit and I've had five Atlas months every year since. 3 The scope for climbing is vast. The country must have 50 limestone gorges, miles long and up to 2000 feet deep, each ofwhich would fill volumes ofclimbs if located in Europe, while on the mountains there are crests to be traversed and notable granite faces still virgin.

Ogden ABSTRACT The Dusky Cockroach, Ectobius lapponicus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Blattodea: Blatellidae), a European native, is an introduced species in North America that was first discovered in New Hampshire in 1984. In Canada, this species was first found in Prince Edward Island in 1991 and has recently been recorded in all three Maritime Provinces. Using ad libitum reports of Ectobius lapponicus sightings with confirmed species identification, we provide an update for an earlier postulation of the establishment and persistence of this non-native cockroach in the Canadian Maritimes, highlighting spatial and temporal trends in Ectobius lapponicus records. While a 13-year gap exists after its original Canadian record in 1991, Ectobius lapponicus has been observed in the Maritimes almost annually since 2004. To date, a total of 119 Ectobius lapponicus individuals have been reported in the Canadian Maritimes: 45 from New Brunswick, 38 from Nova Scotia, and 36 from Prince Edward Island. Seventy-eight percent of individuals are reported from tourist destinations (parks and campgrounds). The vast majority of individuals have been observed outdoors in disturbed habitats near forest edges, although some indoor records exist. Records suggest that this species is active from June–September, which is in accordance with typical periods of activity in Europe. This species also appears well established in Ontario. Widespread confirmation of this species throughout the state of Maine supports the northward spread of this species from New Hampshire into the Canadian Maritimes, likely driven by human-assisted dispersal.

This exercise introduced students to techniques used in studying a group of insects, in this case Blattaria, to produce a regional species key. Producing a guide to a group of insects as a class exercise has proven useful both as a teaching tool and as a method to generate information for the public. Identification of cockroaches is limited here to adults. A major source of confusion is the recogni- tion of adults from nymphs (Figs. 1, 2). There are subjective differences, as well as morphological differences. Immature cockroaches are known as nymphs. Nymphs closely resemble adults except nymphs are generally smaller and lack wings and genital openings or copulatory appendages at the tip of their abdomen. Many species, however, have wingless adult females. Nymphs of these may be recognized by their shorter, relatively broad cerci and lack of external genitalia. Male cockroaches possess styli in addition to paired cerci. Styli arise from the subgenital plate and are generally con- spicuous, but may also be reduced in some species. Styli are absent in adult females and nymphs.
