ABSTRACT Lathyrus species are well placed to meet the increasing global demand for food and animal feed, at the time of climate change. Conservation and sustainable use of the genetic resources of Lathyrus is of significant importance to allow the regain of interest in Lathyrus species in world. A comprehensive global database of Lathyrus species originating from the Mediterranean Basin, Caucasus, Central and West Asia Regions is developed using accessions in major genebanks and information from eight herbaria in Europe. This Global Lathyrus database was used to conduct gap analysis to guide future collecting missions and in situ conservation efforts for 37 priority species. The results showed the highest concentration of Lathyrus priority species in the countries of the Fertile Crescent, France, Italy and Greece.

Hence the need to design a database of the Italian alimurgic flora: AlimurgITA. Only strictly alimurgic taxa were chosen, excluding casual alien and cultivated ones. The collected data come from an archive of 358 texts (books and scientific articles) from 1918 to date, chosen with appropriate criteria. For each taxon, the part of the plant used, the method of use, the chorotype, the biological form and the regional distribution in Italy were considered. The 1103 taxa of edible flora already entered in the database equal 13.09% of Italian flora. The most widespread family is that of the Asteraceae (20.22%); the most widely used taxa are Cichorium intybus and Borago officinalis. The not homogeneous regional distribution of WEPs (maximum in the south and minimum in the north) has been interpreted. Texts published reached its peak during the 2001–2010 decade. A database for Italian WEPs is important to have a synthesis and to represent the richness and Citation: Paura, B.; Di Marzio, P.; complexity of this knowledge, also in light of its potential for cultural enhancement, as well as its Salerno, G.; Brugiapaglia, E.; Bufano, applications for the agri-food system.

It was found that the herbarium contains a large and varied number of plants from different parts of Iraq and in different and varied environments. It was collected and arranged according to a specific system in the herbarium to remain an important source for all graduate students and researchers to take advantage of these plants. Also, the flowering and fruiting periods of these plants in Iraq were recorded for different regions. Most of these plants begin to flower in the spring and thrive in fields and farms. Keywords: Fabaceae; Herbarium; Iraq; Natural; History; Museum 1. Introduction Leguminosae, Fabaceae or Papilionaceae, which was called as legume, pea, or bean Family, belong to the Order of Fabales [1]. The Fabaceae family have 727 genera also 19,325 species, which contents herbs, shrubs, trees, and climbers [2]. The distribution of fabaceae family was variety especially in cold mountainous regions for Europe, Asia and North America, It is also abundant in Central Asia and is characterized by great economic importance.

  • Spring Plants
This article is part of a weekly series published in the Batavia Daily News by Jan Beglinger, Agriculture Outreach Coordinator for CCE of Genesee County. Master Gardener Corner: Spring Charmers Originally Published: April 14, 2015 There is nothing better after any winter than to see that first bloom in the garden. Most are familiar with the traditional spring bloomers - crocus, daffodils and tulips, but there are other plants that herald spring is on the way. Add any of these plants to your landscape for a brilliant splash of spring color. Cornus mas, commonly called Cornelian cherry dogwood, is valued for its very early spring blooms which open earlier than forsythia. Yellow flowers on short stalks bloom before the leaves emerge in dense, showy, rounded clusters. This is a medium to large deciduous shrub or small tree that is native to central and southern Europe into western Asia. It typically grows 15 to 25 feet tall with a spread of 12 to 20 feet wide. Scaly, exfoliating bark develops on mature trunks for winter interest. Zones 4 to 8. Witch hazels (Hamamelis spp.) are large shrubs that have wispy, twisted, ribbon-like delicate blooms that stand up to early spring weather. Depending on the species or cultivar, the flows come in shades of red, yellow and orange; some are even fragrant. Bloom time depends heavily on the weather. In a mild winter they could bloom in February! Witch hazels perform best when planted in a moist but well-drained, loamy, acidic soil. Zones 5 to 8. Cyclamen coum is a tuberous herbaceous perennial, growing just 2 to 3 inches tall.

  • Polyploidy19 Program.Pdf
Preface Yves Van de Peer The study of polyploidy dates back more than 100 years to the work of biologists such as Hugo de Vries and G. Ledyard Stebbins Jr. It has since then been realized that polyploidy is widespread and commonplace in plants. Although polyploidy is much rarer in animals, there are also numerous cases of currently polyploid insects, fishes, amphibians and reptiles. For a long time, ancient polyploidy events, dating back millions of years, were much less well documented and it was not until the advent of genomic technologies that conclusive evidence of ancient whole genome duplications (WGD) events became available and we now have evidence for tens, or even hundreds, of ancient WGD events. Explanations of the short-term success of polyploids are usually centered on the effects of genomic changes and increased genetic variation, which are mediated by changes in gene expression and epigenetic remodeling. Increased genetic variation, together with the direct cytogenetic conse- quences of genome doubling, can potentially affect the morphology and physiology of newly formed polyploids and could lead to alterations of ecologically and envi- ronmentally suitable conditions. For instance, it has repeatedly been proposed that polyploids have increased environmental robustness than do diploids, potentially leading to evolutionary advantages during periods of environmental turmoil. More- over, polyploidy has also sometimes been linked with higher diversification rates. Long(er)-term implications of WGD might be evolutionary innovation and increase in biological complexity by the biased retention of regulatory and developmental genes, which, given time, might diversify in function or cause rewiring of gene regulatory networks.

Abstract: Phenological and symphenological species groups of flowering plants of central Europe By means of phenological characteristics (time from beginning to full development of flowering) of forest plant species, 9 phenological groups have been established which characterize phenophases 1-9 of the vegetation period. Afterwards, 1577 plant species of central Europe were classified into these phenolo gical groups, especially those growing in lower to montane areas (i.e. excluding alpine plants). These species belong to 12 groups of plant communities (А-M ; some with subgroups a-b). On this basis two species lists are prepared, one with symphenological groups related to the community groups A- M (appendix 1) and one in alphabetic sequence (appendix 2). Symphenological group spectra were estab lished and are discussed for the community groups.
