The first edition has resulted in many positive and enthusiastic reactions from buyers all over the world. No less than 9,500 copies have been printed and distributed at wine fairs, and sent to wine lovers, sommeliers, restaurants and wine shops in many countries. In the past six months our wines have again acquired many kudos in the form of medals and other accolades from the wine 48 industry. Our white and red wines show clearly visible improvements in quality under the inspired guidance and attention of Guillaume 14 and his team. This is a very satisfactory development. Using advanced new techniques in the vineyard in addition to the dedicated personal attention of the viticulturist, we can improve 60 on quality time and again. 10 26 Although the wine market has been quite turbulent these past few years, there is a marked growth in the number of buyers of Aaldering wines. Our wines are recognised and valued and we now export Aaldering wines to 36 countries all over the world. From 1 January 2016, our long-time buyers in the Netherlands are being supplied by www.fourcroy.nl, one of the best and most professional wine importers. This year we have managed to bring in a few prestigious new listings. In addition to supplying KLM Business Class, American Airlines and Asiana Airlines (both in First Class), we can now add the First Class service of All Nippon Airways in Japan to our list. And we are proud to tell you that the exotic Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines are now serving Aaldering wines on their cruise 34 ships. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. He published ‘A Brief History of Wine in Spain’ (European Review 21 (2), 209-239, 2013) and ‘Wine, from Neolithic Times to the 21st Century’ (Algora, New York, 2006). HEINRICH Dissertation Director: Carmel Schrire The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established their settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652 in order to refresh passing trade ships with fresh water, vegetables, and meat in hopes of lessening disease and death during the long voyages around the tip of Africa between Europe and the Far East. The great demand for meat provided an impetus for Dutch-Khoehoe interactions which ultimately drained the Khoekhoe of their wealth, land, and identity. Currently, with the exception of the terrestrial faunal from Oudepost I (Cruz-Uribe and Schrire 1991), historic period faunal analyses at the Cape have been very localized, superficially descriptive, and taphonomically flawed, which has ii led to very little understanding of the overall colonial meat market and included some implausible interpretations. This thesis takes into account contextual evidence, applies zooarchaeological methodology, and incorporates actualistically-based research into taphonomic traces on bone surfaces and to better reconstruct the originally deposited samples.

    Historia 58, 2, November 2013, pp 19-39 The Simon van der Stel Festival: Constructing heritage and the politics of pageantry Wouter Hanekom* This article will discuss the Simon van der Stel Festival, an annual event held in Stellenbosch from 1967 to 2000. The focus is on the reasons for initiating such a festival and why a faction within broader Stellenbosch embraced this part of its colonial-Dutch heritage. The progress of the festival will be traced until its climax in 1979, the Tercentenary Festival, in which 300 years since the founding of Stellenbosch was celebrated. Then the Van der Stel Festival will be compared to the Jan van Riebeeck Festival of 1952, which celebrated the arrival of Van Riebeeck in the Cape. It will be argued that while the Jan van Riebeeck Festival was carefully planned by the state to serve as a mass pageant of white domination, the Simon van der Stel Festival was a localised, community-based operation (albeit a narrowly defined sector which made claims to representing the wider community). The article attempts to contribute historiographically to the well-trodden path of South African heritage studies which has been widely discussed by authors such as Ciraj Rassool, and Sabine Marschall.1 However, this article has a decisively local character compared to previous work done on heritage festivals which have had a broader scope of study. Central to this study is the appeal of commemorative and celebratory heritage festivals, especially when historical milestones are reached after a decade, century or millennium. This article will therefore explore notions of heritage construction; pageantry; and “the cult of the centenary” to explain why the Simon van der Stel Festival came into being.
