His father, J. B. Yeats, had abandoned law to take up painting, at which he made a somewhat precar- ious living. Prufrock, the poem’s speaker, seems to be addressing a potential lover, with whom he would like to “force the moment to its crisis” by somehow consummating their relationship. But Prufrock knows too much of life to “dare” an approach to the woman: In his mind he hears the comments others make about his inadequacies, and he chides himself for “presuming” emotional interaction could be possible at all. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The poem moves from a series of fairly concrete (for Eliot) physical settings—a cityscape (the famous “patient etherised upon a table”) and several interiors (women’s arms in the lamplight, coffee spoons, fireplaces)—to a series of vague ocean images conveying Prufrock’s emotional distance from the world as he comes to recognize his second-rate status (“I am not Prince Hamlet’). -

Bornstein: Yeats's Romantic Dante Yeats's Romantic Dante by GEORGE BORNSTEIN HEN I WAS fifteen or sixteen my father had told me about Ros W setti and Blake and given me their poetry to read; and once at Liverpool on my way to Sligo I had seen Dante's Dream in the gallery there, a picture painted when Rossetti had lost his dramatic power and today not very pleasing to me, and its colour, its people, its romantic architecture had blotted all other pictures away," recalled W. B. Yeats in his autobiography. 1 Yeats responded so deeply not to the earlier watercolor at the Tate Gallery but rather to the later oil version of Dante's Dream at the Time of the Death of Beatrice, Rossetti's largest picture and one of his most important. Chief among its colors were the red and gold which Yeats thought Shelley had imported from Italy for English poetry; chief among its people were the quester poet and his dead beloved, whom henceforth he might apprehend sometimes in vision but could only join permanently in death; and chief among its ele ments of "romantic architecture" was a winding stair spiraling upward at the extreme right. -

Yeats’s old friend and fellow occultist Florence Farr from Ceylon in October 1914. At first Yeats shrugged it off: in Ireland, he told Farr, the war seemed more remote than in England, making it easier to 1 FN:1 concentrate on other things. But in London some months later, he complained to his American friend and benefactor John Quinn that ‘[the war] is merely the most expensive outbreak of insolence and stupidity the world has ever seen, and I give it as little of my thought as I can. UDK 821.111(417).09 Yeats W.B.(497.4) WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS IN THE SLOVENE CULTURAL SPACE Janez Gorenc Abstract William Butler Yeats, Irish poet, dramatist and essayist, winner of the Nobel prize in 1923, was also widely known for the active part he played in Irish politics. Even though he was mostly involved culturally - he wrote about Irish politics in his works, established several literary clubs, founded theatres - he also activated himself as a politician when he was a senator during the years 1923-1928. This article focuses on tl.te mention of his political activities in different English and Slovene texts. It makes a presentation of the vast majority of the texts on Yeats that have appeared in Slovene. It also poin.ts outthatwhi1e the riuljority of English encyclopaedias and literary histories openly write about Yeats's politics, Slovene texts about Yeats focus mostly on his literary opus and less on his involvement in politics. When they do mention it, however, they usually avoid the details. This article tries to determine some reasons for this fact. William Butler Yeats, an Irish poet, playwright, occultist, essay writer and occa sional politician, won the Nobel prize in 1923. He thus became an international poet, known in most parts of the world. His works were translated into many languages, his work was described in numerous literary studies and articles, and his name made it into all the encyclopaedias on the literatures in English. In this article I at first focus on any mention of Yeats's political views in various encyclopaedias and some literary histories, and then also on his presence in the Slovene cultural space. -

Joyce Studies in Italy is a peer-reviewed, bi-annual journal aimed at collecting materials that throw light on Joyce’s work and world. It is open to contributions from scholars from both Italy and abroad and its broad intertextual approach is intended to develop a better understanding of James Joyce, the man and the artist. The project was initiated in the early eighties by a research team at the Università di Roma, “La Sapienza”, led by Giorgio Melchiori. It subsequently passed to the Università Roma Tre. Originally no house style was imposed regarding the individual essays in the collection but in recent issues a standardized stylesheet has been adopted which can be found at the end of each volume. Under the patronage of honorary members Umberto Eco and Giorgio Melchiori, the James Joyce Italian Foundation was founded by Franca Ruggieri in 2006 (website: http://host.uniroma3.it/associazioni/jjif).
