Development Centre Studies «Development Centre Studies The World Economy A MILLENNIAL PERSPECTIVE The World Angus Maddison provides a comprehensive view of the growth and levels of world population since the year 1000. In this period, world population rose 22-fold, per capita GDP 13-fold and world GDP nearly 300-fold. The biggest gains occurred in the rich countries of Economy today (Western Europe, North America, Australasia and Japan). The gap between the world leader – the United States – and the poorest region – Africa – is now 20:1. In the year 1000, the rich countries of today were poorer than Asia and Africa. A MILLENNIAL PERSPECTIVE The book has several objectives. The first is a pioneering effort to quantify the economic performance of nations over the very long term. The second is to identify the forces which explain the success of the rich countries, and explore the obstacles which hindered advance in regions which lagged behind. The third is to scrutinise the interaction between the rich and the rest to assess the degree to which this relationship was exploitative. The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective is a “must” for all scholars of economics and economic history, while the casual reader will find much of fascinating interest. It is also a monumental work of reference. The book is a sequel to the author’s 1995 Monitoring the Economy: A Millennial Perspective The World World Economy: 1820-1992 and his 1998 Chinese Economic Performance in the Long Run, both published by the OECD Development Centre. Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1993 20/2-3 The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’s Subjugation of Silla Akima Toshio In prewar Japan, the mythical tale of Empress Jingii’s 神功皇后 conquest of the Korean kingdoms comprised an important part of elementary school history education, and was utilized to justify Japan5s coloniza tion of Korea. After the war the same story came to be interpreted by some Japanese historians—most prominently Egami Namio— as proof or the exact opposite, namely, as evidence of a conquest of Japan by a people of nomadic origin who came from Korea. This theory, known as the horse-rider theory, has found more than a few enthusiastic sup porters amone Korean historians and the Japanese reading public, as well as some Western scholars. There are also several Japanese spe cialists in Japanese history and Japan-Korea relations who have been influenced by the theory, although most have not accepted the idea (Egami himself started as a specialist in the history of northeast Asia).1 * The first draft of this essay was written during my fellowship with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and was read in a seminar organized by the institu tion on 31 January 199丄. 1 am indebted to all researchers at the center who participated in the seminar for their many valuable suggestions. We examined the national standards, state standards, and curricula from other states and districts within Vermont. After exploring these materials, the committee began preparing the skeleton of the document. This phase of the process was long and arduous. It took years of collaboration and compromise. The Scope and Sequence that follows represents a draft that has been reviewed by the committee, the administration, WWSU educators, and experts in the field outside our supervisory union. This document was written for the purpose of informing the practitioner who will use it to guide his or her teaching in the classroom. However, the committee encourages any educator to share his or her pieces with other interested parties. The committee recognizes there might be a need to interpret the meaning of the content for the layperson. The Social Studies Curriculum will include overlying materials such as the WWSU Pre-K – 12 scope and sequence, goals and desired outcomes. Following this overlying material, each grade level includes an introduction sheet with theme(s), geography implications, community service project guidelines, questions to consider, and key concepts covered in that grade. A partial list of resources is included and will be added to at a later date. -

book reviews 267 Elsewhere, to support his contention that the themes of modern erotic poetry are not new to Tibetan literature, the author supplies copious examples from pre-modern writings. These range from the cryptic sensuality of some ka¯ vya-inspired lines, to the outright crudity and bawdiness of more popular literature. This is a revealing and entertaining journey through a regularly overlooked area of Tibetan writing. The relevance of some examples here, and even whether they all belong in a single category, seems more debat- able. The universality of the themes of sex and bodily functions makes it difficult to depict their reappear- ance as a literary continuity. Correspondences and recurrences, especially spread over so many centuries, do not necessarily represent continuation. Doubts about categories and continuity might also be raised in rela- tion to the author’s discussion on “the Tibetan Tradition of Social Criticism” (Chapter 3). I welcome the author’s decision to place politics centre-stage. Rather than a mere backdrop, the pol- itical situation is the crucible in which modern Tibetan literature has been forged. The battle between censorship and creativity continues to shape this most vibrant and dynamic form of Tibetan literature. However, in emphasizing the continuity of indigenous writing, the book underplays debts to foreign literature. In the essay and short-story genres (also innovations by the modern movement) these are especially obvious, but this volume hardly mentions them. A majority of the influential first-generation writers attended the same educational institutions. Their compositions reflect their exposure to an array of traditions: Chinese, Western, and Communist, as well as Tibetan. -

The arts teach young people how to learn by inspiring in them the desire to learn. The arts use a symbolic language to convey the cultural values and ideologies of the time and place of their making. By including Asian arts in their curriculums, teachers can embark on culturally diverse studies and students will gain a broader and deeper understanding of the world in which they live. Often, this means that students will be encouraged to study the arts of their own cultural heritage and thereby gain self-esteem. Given that the study of Asia is required in many state curriculums, it is clear that our schools and teachers need support and resources to meet the demands and expectations that they already face. -

ONCE AND FUTURE WARRIORS The Samurai IN JAPANESE HISTORY By Karl Friday he samurai exercise a powerful hold on popular imaginations, both in and out of Japan, rival- T ing cherry blossoms, geisha, and Sony as Japanese cultural icons. Emerging during the early part of the Heian period (794–1185), these war- riors—known as bushi, tsuwamono, musha, mononofu, and other names at various times in their history—dominated the political and economic land- scape by the early 1200s, and ruled outright from the late fourteenth to the late nineteenth century. Their story is, therefore, central to the history of premodern and early modern Japan, and has become the subject of dozens of popular and scholarly books. It also inspires a veritable Mt. Fuji of misperceptions and misin- formation—a karate instructor in Japan once told me of a New Zealand man who came to live and train with him, and who was absolutely convinced that samurai were still living on some sort of reservation on the back side of a nearby mountain! The Muromachi Period in Japanese History Cer~Ain Periods of History
ONE The Muromachi Period in Japanese History Cer~ain periods of history reveal only enough about themselves to confuse us. The Muromachi period (1336-1573) is one of these, having long defied attempts to discover in it orderly patterns of political and social life. Many traditional historians simply dis missed it as an age of political and economic instability, social anarchy, and inordinate civil violence. While these evaluations are not totally inaccurate, the era that produced the very zenith of Japan's high culture in the visual and performing arts surely offers more to the student of institutional development. This paradox inevitably led Japanese scholars to draw contradictory conclusions about what they found and about what the Muromachi contribu tion was to Japanese history. This volume will try to present a synthetic reinterpretation of Muromachi politics and society in the light of their detailed researches, which in their several ways have helped to demystify the pall of confusion surrounding the era. Our focus will be on the Muromachi Bakufu, the military regime that governed Japan during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and on the shogun who headed that government. Al though the Muromachi Bakufu existed from its founding by Ashikaga Takauji in 1336 until the last shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki was overthrown by Oda Nobunaga in 1573, it ceased to exert real national influence from the early sixteenth century. This book will concentrate only on that part of the Muromachi age (c. 1336- 2 The Muromachi Period 1490) when the Ashikaga shoguns actually ruled and their Bakufu was a viable central government.
