WHO ARE WE

Vintae is an innovative, young and dynamic enterprise, which has wineries in 8 different Designations of Origin in . The initiative originates in the passion of José Miguel Arambarri Terrero for , an entrepreneur from La who is a connoisseur and lover of the wine world. His vision gave birth to Castillo de Maetierra and Maetierra Dominum, two wineries which spawned Vintae. With the inclusion of his two sons, Ricardo and José Miguel, Vintae came into shape as a project and is causing a real revolution in the different aspects of the wine-growing industry, by representing the avant-garde and market approach through many of its products or the creation of , the greatest progress in white in the entire history of the Autonomous Community of .

Vintae is born to create innovative wines adapted to new customer tastes. For this purpose, it has a group of over 50 professionals who share their passion for the wine world with a creative and dynamic spirit, applying this spirit to each of their specialized areas.

OUR TRAJECTORY

Vintae originates in 1999, when, by initiative of José Miguel Arambarri Terrero, an entrepreneur from La Rioja who is a connoisseur and lover of the wine world, the first Castillo de Maetierra vines were planted, the only winery specialized in white wines in the Community of La Rioja. These vines were the beginning of Valles de Sadacia, the new Protected Geographical Indication for white wines in the Community of La Rioja.

The inclusion of his two sons, Ricardo and José Miguel, who now lead the project, as well as other important pillars in the technical and sales areas, gave the finishing touches to a team of great value with an open and innovative mentality, and a will to face the most ambitious of challenges. With this great team and taken to success by the wineries located in La Rioja, they began to explore creative possibilities of other - making areas with the objective of creating a portfolio including the best of each wine area in Spain.

They committed to , one of the most powerful Designations of Origin in the international wine panorama, where they created De Bardos; they looked for creative freedom in , an area adjacent to La Rioja with great innovative possibilities. In Navarra, they found the plot Monastir, where they have created an exclusive collection of estate wines.

In 2009, Matsu appears, in the Toro Designation of Origin, a project which pays homage to wine growers who have dedicated their life to the vine and combines the oriental culture of caring for what’s natural together with the most advanced techniques in biodynamic agriculture regarding European rural areas.

In 2010, Vintae created Spanish White Guerrilla, a unique collection of monovarietal wines including seven of the most recognized white varieties in the world. The grapes were grown in La Rioja, a land originally devoted to reds. In the 2011, they created the ‘Proyecto Garnachas de España’. This collection is made of five wines made of 100% Garnacha grown in different areas of Spain, all of them among the Ebro Valley.

Currently, following a twelve year adventure, Vintae has achieved the creation of a product portfolio covering, practically, the entire Spanish wine panorama, which continues to increase daily. Its commercial presence continues to grow, both nationally and internationally, and is present, to this date, in more than 20 countries, adding new markets every year.

PASSION FOR WINE

For us, wine is a way of enjoying life as well as our professional activity. We also want all our customers to enjoy it and share it. And it is for this reason that we work with the aim of offering products which transmit concepts, ideas and sensations through all the senses, from the design of the bottle to the tasting. Where is the passion for wine reflected? -We look for quality and singularity in the entire Spanish wine panorama. Since our inception we have searched for quality and singularity in the main wine- making areas of the Spanish wine panorama. This has led us to be pioneers in the Ribera del Queiles and to create Valles de Sadacia, without forgetting areas with more tradition such as Ribera del Duero or Rioja.

-The best varieties for each area Vintae's oenological team is committed to taking advantage of th singularities of each region, pushing the most distinguished local varieties to its maximum, or even for such matters foreign varieties which have proven a better adaptation. They search for the most interesting varieties for each area, and for this purpose, they do not hesitate when it comes to innovation, such as happens with Castillo de Maetierra, featuring an extensive catalogue of white varieties, or Winery Arts, by introducing a great number of foreign red varieties.

-Wines transmitting passion. Vintae wines manage to make contact with the current consumer. From the first to the last, the entire Vintae team works so that each detail involving its wines is able to transmit the soul of the wine-growing project in hand. Its area, philosophy, values... all of this to achieve a full experience which completely satisfies the consumer's expectations. Adapted to current consumer tastes, who demand less aggressive, easy-drinking wines, but without renouncing to maximum quality, power and nuance richness, and respecting the singularity of each area.

Raúl Acha, one of the emerging talents in La Rioja

Raúl Acha is the technical director of Vintae. In 2004, he started working with Vintae and since then has been able to create some of the most surprising wines in the entire Spanish wine panorama. In each project, together with his group of oenologists, he applies the most appropriate techniques and above all considers the geographic and climatological characteristics of each area when making a collection of wines.

Born in Cárdenas (La Rioja), he is an agricultural engineer with a Bachelor in Oenology and Advanced Oenology Studies, Raúl Acha is one of the emerging oenological talents in La Rioja. Since childhood he lived, in his hometown, within the world of viticulture where he was able to understand the great importance a meticulous care of raw material has when making a quality wine.

Raúl defends viticulture and an appropriate selection of vineyards as key elements for producing a great wine. Nowadays, together with his group of oenologists, he is able to give expression to his full potential in singular and high quality projects. In each project, he applies the most appropriate techniques and above all considers each area’s geographic and climatological characteristics when making a collection of wines.

Raúl Acha belongs to the Viticulture and Oenology Group ‘Vitur’ of the University of La Rioja, has been a teacher of the Viticulture and Oenology Master carried out in Laguardia and collaborates in wine-growing magazines.

A PORTFOLIO WHICH INCLUDES THE MAIN SPANISH WINE-MAKING AREAS

Vintae has created a series of projects resulting in a collection of wines made in main Spanish wine-making areas. Each project has been built around an exclusive philosophy which has been the basis for choosing from the terroir in which the wine is made, to the image presented to the consumer.

HIGH SPECIALIZATION

IN WHITES

Castillo de Maetierra is the only winery in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja specialized in making white wines. In 2003, it led the creation of the Protected Geographical Indication Valles de Sadacia, an indication which is meant for whites what the DOC Rioja is for reds.

Many of the winery's initiatives have been revolutionary, from starting a project in La Rioja based exclusively on whites, to conceiving a range of dry whites by combining Muscat à Petits Grains with local varieties such as Viura and Malvasía, and introducing a selection of the best white foreign varieties, with the aim of recovering viticulture in La Rioja’s most historical locations.

“Each one of the steps taken by the winery, in a surrounding which is shy to changes, has been preceded by scepticism and followed by amazement”

Castillo de Maetierra has recovered Muscat à Petits Grains, a local variety which stopped being grown due to phylioxera, and has proven its full potential through the Libalis range of wines, which due to its smoothness and freshness is able to satisfy those who are introducing themselves in the world of wine as well as surprising more advanced consumers because of its complexity and nuance richness.

Alvariño grown in La Rioja

Currently, Castillo de Maetierra is working with eight different varieties of white grapes. In addition to the Muscat à Petits Grains, it has created a monovarietal collection including varieties which have never been used in La Rioja before such as Albariño or Verdejo and internationally renowned varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer or Viognier.

The oenological team of Castillo de Maetierra has achieved a perfect acclimation of these varieties in Maetierra's plot, located in the small town of , and the results are wines which are causing a real revolution in the market of Spanish whites.

“The Libalis range of wines, due to its smoothness and freshness, is able to satisfy those who are introducing themselves in the world of wine as well as surprising more advanced consumers because of its complexity and nuance richness”.

Castillo de Maetierra and the Maetierra plot

In Riojan land of Ribera del Ebro, a few steps away from the bimillenial town of Calahorra, and in the same path as the Way of St. James passing through , rises Castillo de Maetierra. Under its watchful eye, in lands of immemorial past, its vines grow showered by the warm sun of Valles de Sadacia. More than 350 hectares compose Maetierra, a fruit and vegetable cultivation featuring the castle and winery in its epicentre, and in which all types of produce are cultivated, many of them ecological. A great spectacle of natural life which can be enjoyed the whole year round, by following the growth cycle of each and one of its crops. From the concept of land as a life producer (madre-tierra - mother earth), in conjunction with the Portuguese term “mae” (mother), originates Maetierra.

VALLES DE SADACIA. THE WHITE REVOLUTION

Valles de Sadacia is a Protected Geographical Indication of quality wines which comprises only white wines within the limits of the Autonomous Community of La Rioja.

In March 2003, Valles de Sadacia decided to firmly commit to a market which is around 50% of the global wine market; with the belief that La Rioja is a land with excellent qualities for making quality white wines and that the current consumer is seeking fresh, fruity and aromatic wines.

After a six year trajectory with notable success within the market, Valles de Sadacia has been the greatest revolution in white wines in the entire history of La Rioja. It has produced different reactions within La Rioja's wine industry and has opened an important debate regarding market possibilities in relation to white wine; a debate which a few months ago has led to the approval by the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja - Rioja's Qualified Designation of Origin - of incorporating new white varieties, this being the first time new varieties have been incorporated since its creation in 1925.

“The innovative initiative of Valles de Sadacia has produced different reactions within La Rioja's wine industry and has opened an important debate regarding market possibilities in relation to white wine”

Valles de Sadacia has bet for a varietal catalogue that includes the most recognized white varieties worldwide. It started recovering the Muscat à Petits Grains, a local variety lost to the phylioxera. Now Muscat à Petits Grains is showing all its potential with fresh and fruity wines, adapted to the taste of today’s consumers. On the other hand, new varieties have been introduced such as Albariño or Verdejo together with other international varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling o Gewürztraminer, some of which are still in an experimental stage

“APIANAE” THE RECOVERY OF A FORGOTTEN VARIETY

Since ancient times, Muscat, known centuries back as “apianae” (from Latin “apis”=bee) is famous for its extraordinary qualities for making delicious sweet wines. However, its excellent adaptation to dry and semi-dry whites, accompanied by other varieties such as Viura or Malvasía, has taken these classic wines to a new dimension of taste and aroma. Of all the Muscat varieties which arrived from Asia Minor before the Roman Age, the Apianae or Muscat à Petits Grains, is the most exclusive and valued variety. It is a local variety, but which had to be reintroduced one hundred years after falling victim to the phylioxera plague and devastating the region in the end of the XIX century. Its great potential and finesse make Castillo de Maetierra wines elegant, fruity and very aromatic. If we add, to all this, a careful grape selection and a limited production, the result is an unequalled quality wine.

MUSCAT À PETITS GRAINS

History of a revolution

In the last quarter of the 20th Century, the Autonomous Community of La Rioja has suffered a continuous decrease in plantation area regarding white varieties in La Rioja, which went from 9,065 Ha. to 4,024 Ha. Taking into consideration the loss of market share of its white wines, wineries and wine growers chose to focus all their efforts in growing and making red wines, which had proven strength in defending the market. Due to this tendency, the importance of whites went from 23% to 7% between 1985 and 2005, whereas the DOC went from 30,206 to 56,569 hectares of land for cultivation.

The main reason isn't, as many have thought, that La Rioja is a bad land for whites, but that the majority of local white varieties lack the necessary features to grow the types of white wines the current consumer is looking for, fruity and aromatic wines.

Aware of this fact, due to the importance of the white wine in the global market (which is around 50%), and convinced of the enormous potential of La Rioja to be among the elite as far as white wines are concerned, José Miguel Arambarri Terrero committed to the idea, and together with the Regional Government of La Rioja, started the project which would later lead to Valles de Sadacia. The greatest revolution in white wines in the entire history of La Rioja. The first step was the recovery of a local variety, the Muscat à petits grains, lost 100 years ago due to phylioxera but kept alive for making sweet whites thanks to Gabriel Pérez Marzo.

In March 2003, it was launched as part of the Indication of Vinos de la Tierra de Valles de Sadacia, an indication created as an authentic boost for white wines in our Community, specializing solely in white wines, and with a singular and differentiated, quality and innovative image. Its geographical limits currently cover four of the seven valleys in La Rioja: Iregua, Leza, and Alhama, but its natural limits cover all the municipalities with qualities to grow white varieties in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja; these include a great number of villages not covered by DOC Rioja.

Valles de Sadacia is, after all, a historic opportunity to generate wealth in the region, from farmers to winemakers to the everyday citizen, focusing mainly on areas not included in DOC Rioja, which survive with less profitable crops, and where white varieties of Valles de Sadacia could cause a revolution in its local economies.

“Convinced of the enormous potential of La Rioja to be among the elite as far as white wines are concerned, José Miguel Arambarri Terrero committed to the idea, and together with the Regional Government of La Rioja, started the project which would later lead to Valles de Sadacia. The greatest revolution in white wines in the entire history of La Rioja”.

La Rioja and Valles de Sadacia's geography

Located within the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, in the North of Spain, and comprised by four of the seven valleys of La Rioja - those covered by rivers Iregua, Leza, Cidacos and Alhama - Valles de Sadacia compose an exceptionally singular location declared a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 2003. The name of these ancestral valleys has a Pre-Roman origin, which later derived from river Cidácos, an affluent of Ebro. From these valleys, the Geographical Indication of Local Wines Valles de Sadacia is born.

Varieties allowed in Valles de Sadacia

Following the aforementioned consumer tendencies, and with the objective of elaborating wines with these features, Valles de Sadacia has selected the most renowned white varieties worldwide.

On the one hand, it has recovered the most delicate variety, Muscat à Petits Grains - a local variety lost to the phylioxera - and, on the other hand, new varieties have been introduced such as Albariño or Verdejo together with other international varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling o Gewürztraminer, some of which are still in an experimental stage.

The presentation of Valles de Sadacia dry wines, which are a mixture of local varieties (Viura and Malvasía) as well as the local but reintroduced Muscat à Petits Grains, has opened a new world of possibilities for existent local varieties, securing its future, previously uncertain.

A real recovery in the interest for white existent varieties can be noticed among farmers, following a regressive stage due to the picking and massive migration towards red varieties. This change in tendency has been noticeable in the price upturn of the white grape, while the price of red is suffering a significant depreciation.

SPANISH WHITE GUERRILLA

Eight unique varieties. Eight unique wines.

Albariño

Vineyard: Alheña (2 hectares)

Adaptation: Alheña presents an alluvial soil with low fertility and a basic Ph. It is a variety originally from and the North of Portugal. Adapting to conditions which are so different to its origins, where high rainfall, high relative humidity, moderate temperatures, limited sunshine and acid soils are present, has been complicated, but the results have been very satisfactory. It is a fuller variety, of small clusters, thin skin and very sensitive to the excess of sunshine. It is fresh, acidic, featuring a slight bitterness, and presents fruity floral, fine and elegant aromas. Its apricot aroma is reminiscent of Viognier.

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Albariño

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour. Aromatic nose of fruity and white flower notes and on the palate it is a wine with great balance and good acidity, providing it freshness and a long aftertaste.

Gewürztraminer

Vineyards: Gavanza (2.5 hectares) and Mejorana (2.5 hectares).

A rose colour grape, very aromatic, terpenic and featuring a citrus flavour, this variety is originally from Central Europe and is traditionally used for making white wines in Alsace (France) and some areas of Germany. Also used for elaborating icewine. It has pleasantly surprised us. When we decided to grow it, we had doubts if this would be too sickly-sweet, honeyed, sweet or alcoholic. However, we have obtained a fresh and acidic wine whose terpenic and honey notes stand out, and featuring very interesting hints of citrus and roses.

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Gewürztraminer

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour. Aromatic nose of Muscat and tropical fruit notes provided by its aromatic terpenic profile. On the palate it is unctuous and greedy, but fresh and tasty at the same time.

Riesling

Vineyards: Gavanza (2.5 hectares) and Mejorana (2.5 hectares).

A great revelation. Our initial objective was to grow a variety which improved wines from an acidic point of view as well as providing freshness to the wines. The great surprise was once vinified, in addition to exceeding our expectations regarding acidity and freshness, we discovered very fine, elegant and subtle aromas, as well as an unctuosity, structure and elegance when passing one's throat; a feature which many crianza red wines with a long mid-palate and velvety aftertaste would envy. Its result is a subtle, humble and elegant wine.

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Riesling

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour which takes on more golden tones with time. An elegant and fine wine on the nose, highlighting fruity and dry hay notes, and some confectionery notes in combination with other more acidic aromas. On the palate it presents a magnificent balance between its high acidity and the small amount of unfermented sugar, providing it a tasty, long, greedy and acidic mid- palate at the same time.

Sauvignon Blanc

Vineyards: Gavanza (2.5 hectares) and Mejorana (2.5 hectares).

It is a rather complex variety to manage from a wine-growing and oenological point of view. Its vegetation is also complicated to manage. It is very sensitive to rot; therefore, the clusters shall be provided with proper aeration as well as protection against excessive sunshine. The moment of its harvesting is an especially complicated decision.

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour. Aromatic nose of boxwood and cat pee typical of its tiolic profile. Its hints of tropical fruits also stand out, especially passion fruit. On the palate it is glyceric, but at the same time it is fine and fresh, resulting in a long and aromatic aftertaste.

Verdejo

Vineyards: Gavanza (2.5 hectares) and Mejorana (2.5 hectares).

This variety is considered originally from Rueda, implanted there by the Mozarabs. A rather rural variety, it is drought-resistant with a thick and strong skin, this makes it less sensitive to different diseases than other white varieties. It produces full-bodied and glyceric aromatic wines. It provides acidity and bitterness. It has perfectly adapted to our conditions, as expected.

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Verdejo

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour with green iridescence. Aromatic nose of boxwood and tomato leaves typical of the variety in combination with fruity and white flower hints. On the palate it is a glyceric, tasty and fresh wine.

Chardonnay

Vineyards: Gavanza (2.5 hectares) and Zarcillo (3.5 hectares).

Chardonnay is a variety extensively grown in most of the wine-growing areas of the world. It is a very plastic variety, that is, it maintains its personality in different growing conditions. It has adapted to our particular conditions in a much better way than we expected, especially from an acidic point of view. We expected to obtain an aromatic, structured, alcoholic Chardonnay with a slight short acidity. However, we have obtained a very fresh aromatic fruit with a great balance between acidity, alcohol and structure. The unusual characteristics of the area's microclimate guarantees the essential aromas and acidity needed for elaborating high-end white wines.

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Chardonnay

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour. Aromatic nose where tropical fruits in combination with banana and peach stand out, as well as hints of honey. On the palate it is round and fleshy, leaving a long and pleasant aftertaste.

Chardonnay Barrica

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Chardonnay Barrica

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour, clean and glossy. A high intensity wine on the nose, vanilla, nuts and very spicy aromas rise from a fruity bottom note with honey nuances. On the palate, it is glyceric, fleshy and round, with a perfect balance between the barrel and fruit. Elegant, fine and long aftertaste, recovering char notes and mature fruit such as peach.

Viognier Barrica

Vineyards: Alheña (1.5 hectares).

Alheña presents an alluvial soil with low fertility and a basic Ph. It is Raúl Acha's personal proposal. The adaptation to our conditions has been amazing. It is a French vine, of uncertain origin and difficult to grow with an enormous oenological potential, especially in its elaboration and/or aging in wood. A powerful structure, body, complexity, acidity, elegant, perfumed, fruity (mango, apple, apricot, vanilla) and floral (magnolia and honeysuckle).

Maetierra’s Spanish White Guerrilla. Viognier

Tasting notes: Straw yellow colour with green tones. On the nose, it features floral notes, such as violets, roses, white flowers, which are perfectly combined with the char and spicy notes provided by the barrel. On the palate, it is a fleshy and mouth-filling wine, leaving an aftertaste of nuts, almonds and violet perfumes.

MAXIMUM CREATIVITY

Combining the New World's innovative and provocative vocation for viticulture and the possibilities offered by Ribera del Queiles, one of the best and most original wine areas in Spain, Winery Arts unveils a collection of singular and exclusive wines around the concept of Numbernine. The family of number 9 doesn't only stand out due to its use of original varieties and techniques, but also because of its outstanding quality. A real “frivolité”; surprising and at the same time irresistible.

Origins

Winery Arts is born due to the attraction experienced by Vintae’s oenological team towards the enormous creative possibilities offered by Ribera del Queiles. In this area, located just a few steps away from La Rioja and following down river Ebro, Raúl Acha and his oenological team discovered a triangle between the river itself and the most Eastern part within the Northeast sector of the Iberian system. An area which entirely preserves the conditions found in La Rioja, both in geology and the edaphic characteristics of soils and climatological conditions, but with the added advantage of an enormous creative freedom which the strict existing regulation of the Rioja Designation of Origin impeded.

“We wanted to create a winery where the search for innovation and quality came hand in hand with a great freedom to create in order to achieve really unique wines”.

Ribera del Queiles, an exceptional microclimate

«The future belongs to the daring, those who take risks, break the rules and create new ones. The future belongs to those who take advantage of the possibility to create it».

Ribera del Queiles is a unique place with an exceptional microclimate for vine growing, which, at the same time, allows working with foreign varieties such as , Cabernet or Syrah, as well as other local varieties such as or Garnacha. Its location, at the edge of the Iberian System's North-western sector, differentiates it from the rest due to receiving a notable Atlantic influence, combined with its unquestionable Mediterranean character and soils with a marked wine-growing vocation. All of this, in addition to the great possibilities for innovation existing in Ribera del Queiles, has allowed Winery Arts to create a surprising and exclusive collection of wines.

Geographically, Ribera del Queiles borders La Rioja on the East and compromises municipalities both in Navarra and Aragon, establishing a truly singular indication.

It is a selection of old vineyards characterized by a very low production, settled on the slopes furrowed by the river Queiles, which descends from the over 2,316 metres Moncayo, to Ribera del Ebro. The area’s Mediterranean character is present in a strong-bodied wine which features a greedy touch, while the Atlantic influence generated by the Moncayo, a natural barrier for Northwest winds, contributes with freshness as well as with a degree of acidity.

The character of the Winery Arts collection is marked by the stamp of a creative and innovative spirit. The project has found in Ribera de Quiles an ideal place for its development, which coincides, to a large extent, with the philosophy expressed by Ricardo Guelbenzu, founder of the Ribera del Queiles indication and winemaker of the precursive project of this designation:

«In order to achieve something, it must be foreseeable in the future, to see it where others can't. Sometimes it is necessary to shy away from rules, and therefore, you must be brave. Before being creative, you must be brave. If creativity is the destination, bravery is the journey».

WINERY ARTS WINES. THE NUMBERNINE PHILOSOPHY

Winery Arts makes its collection of wines in a totally natural way, allowing fermentation with local yeasts to develop spontaneously and hardly using any treatments, filtering, or stabilisers, which is limited to natural fining by means of egg white.

The Nine trilogy and the “Numbernine” concept. Number Nine (9) is considered by several cultures as the number for supreme knowledge, the number which leads to Totality, number ten (10). 9 is considered the number par excellence, as it represents the Triple Ternary, the triple synthesis (corporeal, intellectual and spiritual).

Each one of the wines within the Winery Arts collection has a particular symbolism which, added together with the rest, defines the entire “Numbernine” concept.

The wine, as a continuously evolving being, tends to a state of "completeness", represented by the number nine (N9), where the wine reaches its complete essence of tastes and aromas. Therefore, the wine must go through another two “potential” states.

Firstly, it must go through a state which combines measurable and real world material elements (S3): soil, water, sun and wind. Then it must go through a state of transformation, which requires an intellectual exercise (R6): imagination and creativity transform, first mentally and then factually, the wine into a primitive state, into a more fully-developed wine.

TRES AL CUADRADO Red

Ribera del Queiles is one of the new wine promises. Its territory covers from Moncayo's sides, in Aragon, to Navarra's riverside, and comprises an ideal land for creating original and surprising wines with personality.

Varieties: Merlot, Tempranillo and

Aging: Over 14 months in French and American new oak barrels.

SEIS AL REVES Red

The Mediterranean character is present in this strong-bodied wine featuring a greedy touch, while the Atlantic influence generated by the Moncayo contributes with freshness as well as with a degree of acidity, resulting in a full-bodied and complex wine.

Varieties: Tempranillo and Merlot

Aging: Over 16 months in French new oak barrels.

NUMERO NUEVE Red

This wine synthesizes everything the best grapes from old vineyards with very low production can offer, in conjunction with a careful aging. A strong full-bodied and structured wine, but elegant, which expresses the full potential of Ribera del Queiles.

Varieties: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot

Aging: Over 16 months in French new oak barrels.

EXCLUSIVE NUMBERNINE

Exclusive Numbernine is a real luxury which arises from old vineyards with very low production located on significantly steep hillsides, very difficult to grow and where the vineyard resists the passing of centuries at the Moncayo foot. We are before one of the pioneer wines of Ribera de Queiles. A wine only made in great vintages and which production is very limited.

Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot

Aging: Over 18 months of aging in French new oak barrels.

THE QUATRO PAGOS PHILOSOPHY

Maetierra Dominum is a winery which only produces high expression wines, all made with a very demanding selection of grapes and aged in French new oak barrels, although labelled with a generic back label, which allows the possibility of having complete freedom when determining the production and aging times.

The Quatro Pagos Concept

For a long time estate wine, or “terroir”, has been considered the archetype of maximum quality wine, capable of transmitting the singular properties of a plot.

However, if analyzed carefully, this same virtue can become a limitation, if we are trying to achieve true excellence in a wine. The quality of a wine is determined by specific characteristics, such as aroma, colour, body, fruitiness, structure, elegance.... which are influenced, in a decisive way, by the variety and the properties of the land. It is virtually impossible to find a soil capable of simultaneously potentiating many of these characteristics in a wine. The resulting wine usually has several more developed and others less marked or practically inexistent characteristics.

«The Quatro Pagos concept, goes further than the idea of a traditional coupage, basing itself in the joint action of varieties and estates, selected in such a way that, by means of its synergy, potentiates each and one of the wine's qualities to the maximum».

An estate, due to its geology, layout and climatology, according to its location on one side or the other of La Rioja, may affect in a different way a same vine, favouring or inhibiting one or other qualities. Likewise, each variety of grape has different characteristics; therefore, the selection of a specific variety for a specific estate, with the objective of potentiating a specific quality may achieve an exponential effect. The combination of estates and varieties are very broad, and by adding in different proportions the participation of one or other varieties in the wine, may give an idea of the complexity of the resulting wine.

All in all, the project puts a spin to the traditional concept of "estate wine", developing it, and introducing the idea of several selected estates, combining varieties which characteristics potentiate each one of the wine's properties in a complementing way, opposed to the traditional concept, a monovarietal wine from a sole estate, limited to the characteristics of a sole land.

This simple idea gave birth to a long study process which, after several years, has given place to a new concept of wine.

The four Maetierra Dominum estates

The East Estate. Fruitiness

Located on a slightly rough terrain with a Southeast orientation, of alluvial soils and medium rainfall, it was characterized for granting wines a fruity character, where floral aromas and other primary components led.

The South Estate. Strength

Strength was the main feature of the South estate, a flat land of rocky terrain, which aridity and significant thermal rise gave place to warm and full-bodied wines.

The North Estate. Longevity

With a smoother climate and located on broken terrain, it granted wine longevity, thanks to its high content in tannins and high acidity.

The West Estate. Elegance

The main feature of the West Estate was elegance and its ability of harmonizing the rest.

Three varieties

Following the same path undertaken until now, varieties were used which could further potentiate the estate's characteristic.

Tempranillo: contributes with versatility and is capable of granting more longevous or elegant wines depending on the physical and geographic conditions of the land in which they are found.

Graciano: it’s the origin of strong wines, with a lot of colour and body.

Red Garnacha: stands out due to reinforcing the fruity component.

The search for equilibrium

As in many aspects of life, the greatest difficulty rests, generally, in finding equilibrium, which usually coincides with the point of excellence, where the combination of each part is greater than each part separately. The project's objective mainly lies on this idea of producing a superior wine from different origins with strong highlighted qualities.

Without any recipe or previous design, and following only the oenologist's tastes, the wines are shaped from the separate vinification of each estate, until an optimum blend is reached. The same freedom used in the blend, and which inspires all the steps in the project, is also enjoyed during the aging.

Mainly French new oak barrels from seven cooper workshops are used, where different forests and different chars are mixed with the aim of achieving greater nuance richness. The evolution of such a singular wine isn't easily predictable; therefore, it is left to mature without any rush, keeping an eye on the changes it experiments at every moment.

Our wines set their own “tempo”. They themselves decide when to leave the barrel in order to achieve the best equilibrium between fruit and wood, without paying attention to the restrictions set out in the legislation regarding aging time.

THE ROOTS OF A MYTH

De Bardos is an ambitious project which delves into the history and best quality and singular vineyards in Ribera del Duero. A trip through the culture of a land with great wines in which, by means of using traditional methods, has been able to achieve a reference collection among the new Spanish Signature Wines.

The De Bardos collection has four pieces of art which awaken past times when craftsmanship was transmitted from generation to generation from masters to disciples.

Wines with an own voice

The same as ancient bards narrated mythical battles, each one of the wines in this collection has a different story to tell. Although the group of areas contribute common values to the De Bardos collection, in each one of the wines the dominance of an area can be predicted, transmitting them specific characteristics, as well as a distinguished personality. Ars Romántica denotes sweetness and smoothness, Ars Épica stands out due to its freshness and elegance, Ars Mítica is a greatly structured and complex wine, and Ars Suprema stands out due to its strength, all of which all add up into a highly singular work of art.

Mythical Areas of Ribera del Duero

La Ribera del Duero has been unveiled in these past years as one of the reference areas in the national and international panorama. In order to produce De Bardos, the estates all share the characteristic of being located on high areas of the plateau, mainly on hillsides and moors which protect from the area's frost. The low production per hectare, only harvested in excellent vintages, grants the grape all the terrain’s singularities.

In addition, the selected vineyards all have in common the fact that they are located in reference villages due to the quality of its vines. Therefore, without a doubt, some of the best vineyards of the region are found in Fuentemolinos, Quintanilla de Onésimo, Anguix or Moradillo de Roa.

Only great stories are immortalized by bards in their chants; likewise, only excellent vintages are made into a wine of our collection at our winery. In this way, even when a great selection of the grape and vineyard is performed, some of the wines, or even the entire collection, may not be made if the vintage doesn't allow the grape to reach the exceptional quality required.

THE TERROIR REVOLUTION

The Monastir project gives shape to a collection of single vineyard high expression wines, modern, full-bodied and with significant finesse, which recover the notion of looking after the vineyard as a main source of quality. A greatly exclusive project, with very limited productions and focused on the more demanding palates.

From the Latin term ‘monasterium’, Monastir gives name to the ancient multivarietal vineyard which is the cornerstone of the project. The vineyard, property of the winery, is located in a privileged place, on the right bank of River Ebro, nearby the Eastern border of La Rioja.

“The excellent qualities of soils, the particularities of its microclimate and the enormous diligence when it comes to looking after its vineyards, featuring extremely low productions, result in an exceptional quality grape”.

Raúl Acha, oenologist

Its rocky soils, with a calcareous component, and its good drainage, forces the plant to produce very limited productions, but of extraordinary quality. Its high location, on a plateau, provides its vineyards with good ventilation and protects it from the humid morning dew. In addition, the area’s climatological conditions make it an ideal location for growing vines due to the existent temperature difference between night and day, as well as the extremeness of its climate, both in winter and summer.

In addition to its geoclimatic and edaphic characteristics, an important singularity which makes the Monastir vineyard stand out is its multivarietal condition. The Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah varieties match to perfection and potentiate their exceptional qualities, giving place to singular and complex wines adapted to current market tendencies.

The Monastir Project: The resurrection of a region

Historically, Navarra is a land of great quality vineyards. At the beginning of the XX century, strong and full-bodied wines, as well as featuring great finesse, marked a golden age which provided Navarra with immense prestige. In the following decades, the market's demand evolved towards light-bodied and homogenous wines. Lately, many initiatives have been developed in Navarra in order to recover the previous prestige. Among these, those undertaken by Raúl Acha and his team of collaborators stand out, who aware of the oenological potential of this land, canvassed the region until coming across Finca Monastir, a very special vineyard which has optimum conditions, both climatic and geological, in order to grow high quality vines.

The Monastir collection delves into the deepest roots of Navarran land. A region with an immense heritage, both architectural and cultural, strongly marked by the social and religious life surrounding the monasteries of each different period.

NATURE TIME

The passion José Miguel Arambarri has for nature, a civil engineer and enthusiast, is instilled in this project. His post-graduate studies in Barcelona and travels through different regions of the world triggered his interest in bioculture and sustainability, concerns which he also found in the renowned oenologist Raúl Acha, friend and colleague in other wine-growing projects.

Raúl Acha knows all Toro soils and vineyards to perfection, an arid region with an extreme climate which has produced some of the strongest wines in the Spanish wine-growing panorama.

Imbued by biodynamic viticulture, they initiated a search for the best vineyards in the area in order to shape Matsu, which in Japanese means “wait” and defines the essence of this project to perfection.

Matsu is inspired in the Japanese traditional culture of looking after nature, its purity, simplicity and absence of devices, in order to pay homage to the Castilian wine-growing tradition.

Matsu represents the essence of an ecological wine, which making constitutes a “wait” during the cycle leading towards its final equilibrium.

In the same fashion as its wines, the image of Matsu has been stripped away from any type of devices which connect it to the land and people who look after it day after day.

The Matsu wine trilogy, ‘El Pícaro’, ‘El Recio’ and ‘El Viejo’, represents the three generations of wine-growers, each and one of them featuring a relationship with the land in accordance to its age and vital stage. Each of these generation’s personality embodies the characteristics of the wine to which it gives its name.

-Faithful to its image, ‘El Pícaro’ is strong and brave; cheeky and uncontrollable.

-‘El Recio’ brings together the power of youth and the experience of age in order to express serenity, perseverance and strength.

-‘El Viejo’ is completeness and wisdom. It knows the land in such depth that it understands the element's language.

These three red wines embody the essence of Matsu, reaching its maximum expression in Matsu 2006, a special and unrepeatable edition, which image synthesizes the collection's values. Matsu 2006 reaches the market in a limited edition commemorating its birth.

As a tribute to nature, Matsu assigns 0.7% of its profits to environmental projects.

CLASSIC PHILOSOPHY, MODERN WINE

Bodega Classica is a winery specialized in creating great red aged wines, aimed towards the quality wine consumer.

Bodega Classica bases its philosophy on the taste for simplicity, elegance and experience. The revolution is not found in the use of unusual practices, but in the rediscovery of ancient masterful arts, executed with skill, dexterity and craft by talented oenologists with broad knowledge, and where inspiration is an occasional prize granted to genius and expertise, supported by the day to day discipline, work and control of the technique.

“Everything in Bodega Classica is performed with attention to detail, from the wine to its attire, which pretends to transmit the harmony between tradition and modernity of the wine it contains. The simplicity and elegance of great creations which live on”.

Beyond superficial fashions, which in current society come and go at a dazzling speed, the essence of wine is governed by a slower and paused flow of time, affirmed with the pass of the years by generations and generations of craftsmen, wine-growers, and winemakers who have a special virtuosity which enabled them to make unrepeatable wines with much more modest means than those we have at our disposal nowadays.

The evolution of current society's habits has favoured a change of mentality in the consumer and enthusiast of the wine world. Therefore, Bodega Classica, setting out from current tastes, tries to recreate new “classics” by recovering, from simplicity and elegance, the philosophy of great wines.

BODEGA CLASSICA. AN UNMATCHABLE LOCATION

Located on a bucolic hill in the historic village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Bodega Classica's building rises above a see of vineyards, flanked by the running of river Ebro and Sierra de Toloño's sides.

The winery is excavated on the mountain; therefore, providing important savings in energy, as on the one hand the temperature is kept constant in a natural way, and on the other, the grape enters the winery with just the aid of gravity, without the need of using any machinery.

BODEGA CLASSICA WINES

Bodega Classica wines are expressive and aromatic wines, very pleasant to the palate, at a point between tradition and High-Expression; wines which are capable of satisfying the more demanding enthusiasts as well as the average consumer. Grape selection is the basis and time, wood and attention to detail take care of the rest.

THE ORIGIN OF THE GARNACHA VARIETY

The collection Proyecto Garnachas de España pays homage to a local variety that has been traditionally reviled for different reasons and which, however, has enormous oenological possibilities: The Garnacha variety.

To create this collection, we have travelled through different points in Spain and found very special vineyards with all the peculiarities we were searching for in this variety, as well as explored how it behaves in different soils and under different climate conditions.

This search and research process has been reflected in the documentary, which is also part of this project.

The collection comprises five wines made with Garnacha grown in different areas of Spain, all of them along the Valle del Ebro.

The collection is the result of a very personal project that initiated with the search for vineyards in different areas of Spain that best reflected the essence of this variety.

The best Garnacha vines have traditionally been grown in the Valle del Ebro. In the Priorat, Aragon, Navarra and La Rioja is where this variety has found a perfect place to re-emerge and provide high quality wines in the past few years. These wines have obtained the best ratings from the international critics and a great acceptance from the current consumer, who looks for easy-drinking, round, sweet and fruity wines with sweet tannins, exactly what the Garnacha offers.

Why is the Garnacha variety the main character of this collection? This variety - so reviled in the past - is originally from Spain and is capable of offering excellent results if it is worked properly, as we can see in some of the great wines that have been made in the past few years.

This is a really special collection of wines; each of them has their own personality and history. By means of this collection we have tried to show - in addition to this grape’s versatility – the peculiarities that each of the areas chosen provide when making these wines. Old vineyards - between 50 and 100 years old - have been recovered in these areas of the Valle del Ebro, and we have tried to express the unique concept of ‘terroir’, the nuances and the singularities of their places of origin in the wine.
