  • The Faculty Perspectives of Academic Freedom at Christian Colleges and Universities
The Faculty Perceptions of Academic Freedom at Christian Colleges and Universities Jerald H. Walz Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Steven M. Janosik, Committee Co-Chair Elizabeth G. Creamer, Committee Co-Chair Verna J. Lowe Claire K. Robbins May 22, 2017 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: academic freedom, statements of faith, faculty, Christian college or university, definition, critical incident, navigation Copyright 2017 The Faculty Perceptions of Academic Freedom at Christian Colleges and Universities Jerald H. Walz Abstract Academic freedom is a much-discussed topic in the literature. However, little empirical research has been performed that describes the faculty perceptions of academic freedom at Christian colleges and universities, a unique segment of institutions within US higher education. Specifically, little recent research has shown how faculty members at Christian colleges and universities define academic freedom, how they describe experiences where they encountered issues of academic freedom, and how they navigate the interaction between academic freedom and institutional religious doctrines (as found in official statements of faith). The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze how faculty members at Christian colleges and university perceive academic freedom. For this qualitative study, I employed the Critical Incident Technique (Flanagan, 1954) to collect data from full-time faculty members of Christian institutions. I present the findings discovered through this study, discuss their ramifications, offer recommendations, and draw conclusions. The Faculty Perceptions of Academic Freedom at Christian Colleges and Universities Jerald H. Walz General Audience Abstract Academic freedom is an important concept for scholars working in higher education.

  • Class of 2005 Scholar Bios
Class of 2006 Class of 2005 Class of 2004 Class of 2003 Navid Abghari I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia to two Persian parents. As a first-generation Persian- American, I was forced to juggle conflicting cultures, to balance a conservative Persian upbringing while living in a freethinking American society. Dealing with culture lines have helped me develop as a person, and have laid the foundation for who I am today. As I have grown older, I have jumped at the opportunities to branch out and meet new people. In high school, I volunteered at a local Alzheimer’s assisted living center where I become close with many people with whom I would not ordinarily come in contact. Also, became involved with a nature/recycling center. To this day, I make sure to go back and get some time in with all the people I met at these places. College has afforded even more opportunity for me to grow and develop as a person. I have, with the help of a fellow student, begun to organize and establish a new student organization: the Persian Student Association. Also, I have gotten involved with the Banking and Finance Society, Watchdawgs, and the Economics Society. Looking back, I am more and more grateful for my experiences with two extremely different cultures. I value aspects of both cultures that many people take for granted, because I have perspective from both sides. Although my experience with biculturalism may have been trying, I would never wish for them to be different, as they have collectively helped me become the person I am today.

  • “Items of Interest”
GHSA “Items of Interest” December 2005 / January 2006 Seasons Greetings and HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM YOUR GHSA STAFF Front row (L-R): Julie Jones, Pam Thompson, Joyce Kay, Sheri Coker and Tanya Anderson. Back row (L-R): Dennis Payne, Steve Figueroa, Ralph Swearngin, Ernie Yarbrough and Gary Phillips. In the Greek language, there are two words that could be used to communicate the English word “new.” One strictly means new in time or unused. The other carries the meaning of higher quality. As the GHSA looks toward the unused days of 2006, there is a strong desire to provide a higher quality of service to member schools. In 2006, we look forward to the continuation of high quality athletics and competitive activities. There is every reason to believe that the great accomplishments in the fall sports and activities season will be matched in the winter and spring seasons. The use of central sites for both Team Dual Wrestling (Macon Centreplex) and Traditional Wrestling (The Arena at Gwinnett) has stimulated excitement. On Saturday, April 29, the second Student Leadership Summit will be held at the Macon Centreplex. Information about this event will be forthcoming after the first of the year. The first 100 schools to register will be able to send a female athlete, a male athlete, and a coach or administrator to this one-day conference. On Monday, June 26, the inaugural Coaches Symposium on Sports Medicine will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest as a prelude to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association annual conference. Recognized leaders in sports medicine will conduct practical workshops for the benefit of GHSA coaches.
