ATLANTA TIPOFF CLUB NAMES 2011 HIGH SCHOOL AWARD WINNERS List of Local Honorees Headlined by Brianna Banks and Shannon Scott ATLANTA (March 17, 2011) – Fayette County High School senior Brianna Banks and Milton High School senior Shannon Scott were named Miss Georgia Basketball and Mr. Georgia Basketball, respectively, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. In addition, Senior Jasmine Camp (Chamblee Charter High School) and junior Tony Parker (Miller Grove High School were named as the 2011 Metro Atlanta Basketball Players of the Year. The winners were selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s board of selectors and its voting academy, comprised of leading basketball coaches and administrators from around the region, who based their criteria on player performances throughout the season. All honorees will be recognized at the Atlanta Tipoff Club Naismith Awards Banquet presented by AT&T on March 21 at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, Ga. “The basketball talent in Atlanta continues to excel and is without question among the best in the nation,” said Eric Oberman, Atlanta Tipoff Club executive director. “We feel a tremendous sense of pride in all of our winners and honorees and salute their amazing seasons.” ABOUT THE WINNERS: Miss Georgia Basketball: Brianna Banks, Fayette County High School – She led her team in points, assists and steals en route to the Class AAAA state title, the school’s first, which avenged two state championship game losses in 2008 and 2009. In fact, the second-ranked Tigers closed the season with 19 consecutive victories, and only once during the streak was the margin of victory closer than 10 points. Next year the 5-9 guard will play basketball at the University of Connecticut. Mr. Georgia Basketball: Shannon Scott, Milton High School – The Ohio State signee averaged 13 points and seven rebounds per game for Milton. The 6-2 guard had the distinction of playing on a team that made it to the state semifinals in each of his four seasons. He won the Class AAAAA championship as a junior and made it to the championship game this season. He is the son of former North Carolina and NBA great Charlie Scott. Bobby Cremins Georgia High School Girls Coach of the Year: Charles “Chunk” Reid, Vidalia High School – Reid led his squad to a 28-0 start before falling in the second round of the Class AA Girl’s state tournament. His season was highlighted by winning his 750th career win and is currently 10th on the list of active girl’s basketball coaches for career wins. Bobby Cremins Georgia High School Boys Coach of the Year: David Boyd, Milton High School – Led Milton to a 29-3 record and a berth in the Class AAAAA State Championship game, where they fell to Norcross. The Eagles were consistently ranked in the Top 5 nationally throughout the regular season. In 27 years of coaching he owns a 573-194 career record. He’s won this award on two previous occasions, including 2010. Bob Eskew Outstanding Sportsmanship Award: Benjamin Banneker High School Charlie Bloodworth High School Official of the Year: Chas Frazier – Frazier has been officiating basketball at the high school level since 1998 and college level since 2000. He has officiated 13 Georgia high school tournaments. He is the current president of the Greater Georgia Basketball Officials Association and was named the 2004 Georgia Athletic Coaches Association referee of the year. He officiates in the Atlantic Sun, Ohio Valley, SIAC and Peach Belt conferences, as well as Georgia JUCO, where his is a 4-time championship game official. Metro Atlanta Girls Player of the Year: Jasmine Camp, Chamblee Charter High School – Camp averaged 13 points and four assists per game in leading Chamblee this season. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 23-0 record and a No. 2 ranking before losing a tough contest in the Class AAAA Region 6 tournament quarterfinals. She has signed a letter of intent to play basketball next year at the University of Stanford. Metro Atlanta Boys Player of the Year: Tony Parker, Miller Grove High School – The 6-7 junior led Miller Grove to its 3RD consecutive CLASS AAAA state championship, scoring 21 points, hauling down 15 rebounds and adding five blocked shots. In doing so, the Wolverines became of only 10 high school program in Georgia to achieve a three-peat. For the season he averaged 16 points and 12 boards per game. He is Georgia’s top-rated prospect in the class of 2012. Garland F. Pinholster Metro Atlanta Girls High School Coach of the Year: Jan Azar, Wesleyan School – Azar led the Wolves to a 32-2 record and a fourth straight championship. Overall, Wesleyan has won eight state titles in 10 years, six of which came at the Class AA level. In 14 seasons, she is 351-77. Garland F. Pinholster Metro Atlanta Boys High School Coach of the Year: Jeremy Adams, Sequoyah High School – In just four years at the helm of the Chiefs, Adams has amassed a 70- 43 career record. This season, Sequoyah jumped out to a 29-0 start before falling in the second round of the state playoffs. For more information, visit www.naismithawards.com.
