LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD all are invited to achieve and celebrate the goals of the school. Together, we have accomplished so much more than we ever could as individuals. In the 2016-2017 school year, more than 96% of Wesleyan’s current parents made gifts to the Wesleyan Fund – the national average at independent schools is approximately 70%. Alumni participation in the Wesleyan fund for the year was more than 30% - the national average is approximately 9%. The ongoing support of our parent and alumni body is overwhelming! This level of commitment represents a significant investment on the part of our community. At a time when we are asking our parents to write some of the largest checks they have ever written and when many of our alumni are in the season of building a financial foundation, we are also asking them to support the school financially. We are committed to being good stewards of the investment our supporters have made in our school community. As you read this report, please keep in mind that none of this is possible outside of God’s provision and the numerous people who faithfully serve and volunteer in order for the school to reach its fundraising goals. Wesleyan parent and trustee Anna Tanner has been a steadfast advocate for the school and leader of the Development Committee. Jennifer Laing Copeland, Matt Cole, Shelley Noble, Kathy Gholston, Mitzi Ritchie, and Linda McElwaney of the Office of Development work tirelessly both behind the scenes and with our families to do everything from asking for support to processing gifts in a timely fashion. The volunteers on our development committee are listed in the pages that follow and we are grateful for their service. Wesleyan alumnus and Trustee Drew Prehmus (’04) provided strong leadership for our Alumni Fund working in conjunction with Shelley Noble in the Office of Development. Walz Abstract Academic freedom is a much-discussed topic in the literature. However, little empirical research has been performed that describes the faculty perceptions of academic freedom at Christian colleges and universities, a unique segment of institutions within US higher education. Specifically, little recent research has shown how faculty members at Christian colleges and universities define academic freedom, how they describe experiences where they encountered issues of academic freedom, and how they navigate the interaction between academic freedom and institutional religious doctrines (as found in official statements of faith). The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze how faculty members at Christian colleges and university perceive academic freedom. For this qualitative study, I employed the Critical Incident Technique (Flanagan, 1954) to collect data from full-time faculty members of Christian institutions. I present the findings discovered through this study, discuss their ramifications, offer recommendations, and draw conclusions. My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.
