We search far and wide—A Better Chance Scholars hail from 27 states and 14 major metropolitan areas throughout the country!

Four years ago, I was struggling to survive school in . A Better Chance completely changed my life. Today I’m a confident, outspoken, high-achieving high school graduate with plans to make my voice heard. I have served on the Honor Council; in the Inclusion Society, as a prefect and as an Eco-Action Team Leader. I am a role model for other A Better Chance Scholars and low-income students of color to never stop in the pursuit of their education, regardless of any obstacle or adversity. Before, I had always found math to be a challenge. Now – I can hardly believe it – I’m an award-winning math student who just got an A in Calculus! There’s NOTHING I can’t do!

2017 Annual Report 3 A FAR-REACHING IMPACT DRIVEN BY A SMALL AND MIGHTY STAFF A Better Chance is a national organization with an entrepreneurial staff of 25, most of whom are based in our NYC headquarters. Regional program managers are based in five additional cities: , , Atlanta, /Oakland and Los Angeles. Our proven model is highly cost effective as measured by: • Number and quality of Scholar placements • Grade and geographic span of placements • Member School graduation levels • College enrollment and completion The size and scope of the students and families we serve is often 3x higher compared to organizations doing similar work with similar budget and staff size. Many organizations serving a comparable number of students have budgets and staff levels that are significantly bigger than A Better Chance’s. VOLUNTEERS EXTEND OUR REACH Our success is also due to approximately 700 volunteers, including current Scholars, parents, Alumni, school leaders, community members, corporate leaders and employees who are inspired to help an organization with a record of building future leaders of color. In 2017, our nationwide volunteers helped A Better Chance in many ways – logistical planning; delivery of program events; advocacy within their communities; administrative tasks; fundraising; and serving on advisory panels.

Morgan Stanley sponsors the A Better Chance Career Program – a six part webinar series – to our Scholars and Alumni on career and workforce skills.

This effort principally uses 3 to 4 member volunteer panels drawn from the corporate and academic worlds. More than 700 attended last year.

2017 Annual Report 11 A BETTER CHANCE SCHOLAR PROFILE

Amari was in 8th grade when she was invited to be a part of A Better Chance. Amari’s parents always taught her to do her best. When they both became ill, she promised herself, and them, that she would make them proud. Through ABC, Amari, along with her brother, were accepted into Flintridge Preparatory School. She was awarded the opportunity to intern at a fashion company and to become a Scholar Ambassador. During all this time, the team at ABC checked on Amari and her brother to ensure they could handle the pressure of home and school. Amari went on to join the Student Diplomacy Corps, traveling to for the Flamenco and Picasso Program. Recently, she chose Tufts University for college. Amari attributes her success to A Better Chance, and of course, to her loving parents.

“I never would have expected I would come through so strong, and I wouldn’t have, without A Better Chance. Through it all, A Better Chance was an amazing source of support...They really invested in us and kept us on track.”

A Better Chance’s work would not be possible without the generous support of its donors and partners. In fiscal year 2017, Alumni, friends, and institutional and corporate partners of the organization made contributions in the following ways:

Thank you for investing in thousands of talented youth. Your generosity has changed nearly 16,000 lives!

1963 SOCIETY SUPPORTERS

The 1963 Society was launched in 2016 to recognize donors who contribute $5,000 or more annually. In the of 1963, at the height of the Civil Rights movement, 23 headmasters of selective independent schools gathered to make a mutual commitment to change the profiles and compositions of their student bodies. The following summer, Dartmouth College became the site of a radical experiment to prepare 55 African American ninth and students to enter private schools. The eight-week tutorial session, known as PROJECT ABC: A Better Chance, became a runaway success. Today, A Better Chance continues this legacy through our mission to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

Thanks to A Better Chance, I attended and graduated from The Lawrenceville School. I was pushed to challenge the way I saw the world, to speak up for what I believed in, and to try what I thought was unimaginable, including directing and performing in dance concerts, traveling to Tanzania for community service, and leading school-wide diversity initiatives.
