Diamond Head State Monument Summit Trail To Close October 20 For Slope Maintenance And Rockfall Mitigation

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) reminds the public that in two weeks, it will close the historic summit trail at Diamond Head State Monument, for a month – starting Monday, October 20, 2008 to Thursday, November 20, 2008 – to conduct maintenance of the slopes and rock scaling of potential rockfall hazards along the trail.

“To ensure public safety, we will be closing the summit trail to the public for an entire month of work -- hiking will not be allowed on any part of the trail. We are asking for the public’s cooperation not to access the summit trail by any means while the project is underway,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson.

The park area inside the crater (the parking lot and adjacent fields, the restroom, and information booth) will remain open to the public during most of the work.

During this same period, DLNR will also carry out rock scaling work above the Kahala Tunnel, which serves as the only entrance into the Monument. The tunnel will be closed for this work approximately November 13-20, and the entire park will have to be closed in the interest of public safety. Notice of the tunnel closure will be announced in the news media before work begins.

The Diamond Head State Monument summit trail attracts more than 600,000 residents and visitors annually. Despite continued trail maintenance efforts, the summit trail has deteriorated due to increases in visitor numbers and the natural effects of erosion.

DLNR is working with the Office of State Tourism Liaison, Hawaii Tourism Authority and other visitor industry organizations to inform hotels, taxi, bus and rental car transportation companies, and other visitor industry businesses of the closure.

The department has worked with the Diamond Head Citizens' Advisory Committee, and is also notifying The Bus, and other community and user organizations, and will post notices at the park entrance and distribute flyers to frequent park users at the park information booth. The maintenance of these areas is the first phase of the state’s planned upgrades to the historic summit trail at Diamond Head State Monument.

Subsequent phases will include the Diamond Head Trail Improvements Project, now currently in design, which will improve sections of the trail that have deteriorated due to usage, age and weathering. Improvements will address the narrow corridors and other trail sections that have deteriorated; and install safer stairways and wider walkways, install slope stabilization and rockfall mitigation measures, and construct a loop trail connecting the Summit Lookout and the rest-stop landing at the top of the pedestrian tunnel.

Future phases of the Trail Improvement Project will also decrease hiker congestion on the Summit Trail by expanding the existing trail for safer walkways, stairways, and lookouts.

Future phases of the rockfall mitigation and slope stabilization project will include work along Diamond Head Road and Poka Place.

For more information, please contact the Division of State Parks at 587-0300 or 587-0294, or visit the State Parks website at www.hawaiistateparks.org and check the “Announcements section.

Beginning October 17th The Room Has A View And The Food Is The Twist

Executive Chef Ryan Loo, in collaboration with the culinary experts at the Sheraton Waikiki have developed the most unique and colorful menu in all of Honolulu. Take yourself around the world and island hop as you experience food from Seychelles Islands in Africa, Porquerolles France or Mallorca Spain. “Our philosophy of cooking is about synergy, the harmony of fresh local ingredients and products and how they are cared for from farm to table”, say’s Loo. From the local farmers in Waimanalo and Hamakua who meticulously care for their baby herbs, oyster mushrooms, and vegetables for which they provide us fresh daily, to the aqua culturists that farm raise their Kampachi, sea asparagus and lobsters, and the bounty of freshness from the land and sea of Hawaii enable them as hosts, to prepare foods that tantalize the palate with simplicity of flavor. Beginning October 17th there will be seven menus in all to choose from and Chef’s tastings in 3, 4 or 5 courses. You will experience bold influenced flavors paired with the fresh products of the land, and fresh seafood, spices, herbs and fruits that are incorporated into the cuisine. A truly unique dining experience refined. The wine pairings are even sustainable, using organically grown grapes from Parducci Vineyards operated in California's Mendocino County and featuring winemaker Paul Dolan’s exclusive blends such as Paul Dolan Sauvignon Blanc.

As well, the restaurant’s interior has just been redesigned with beautiful organic touches in a modern contemporary style and features architectural elements from 3Form (an eco resin, environmentally conscious, unique material made from 40% re-grind content), and intimate lighting which dramatically sets the scene for a stunning sunset and view of Diamond Head crater and Honolulu’s city lights. TESORO Presents Louis Vuitton HIFF at Sunset on the Beach October 11, 12

This weekend, on October 11 & 12, TESORO HAWAII proudly presents the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) at “Sunset on the Beach.” Each year, Sunset on the Beach becomes one of the most unique and popular venues for the film festival, with Waikiki Beach as the setting - sand taking the place of seats, and a moonlit sky for a ceiling. This year’s event will not disappoint, as five films will be presented – three of them filmed in Hawaii, including the acclaimed “Chief,” “The First Hawaiian Snowball Fight,” and “The Legend of Chang Apana,”

“This is an excellent opportunity for kama’aina and visitors to enjoy being a part of the festival and view several noteworthy films on beautiful Waikiki Beach – and it’s free!” said Rick Egged, Waikiki Improvement Association (WIA) president. “We are extremely grateful to Tesoro for bringing this event free to the public, and also thank the folks at HIFF for working with us to make the event possible.”

Sunset on the Beach food booths will open at 4:00 p.m. Great live entertainment will start at 4:30 p.m., and the movies will screen at about 6:30 p.m.

Sunset is presented by TESORO HAWAII, and is also brought to you in part by the CITY & COUNTY OF HONOLULU, the HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY, and the WAIKIKI IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION which produces the event.

These musicians performed on thousands of records, film and television soundtracks that defined popular culture in the swinging '60s.
