Teixeira de Salles, *Literatura e Consciencia National, Belo Horizonte, Imprensa Oficial, is well rev. by Rui Mourao, CoiL, 20:95-6, though his synopsis of the book is rather con- voluted. According to MGSL, 2 November, the revd ed. of Antonio Paim, *Historia das Ideias Filosoficas no Brasil, SPo, Grijalbo/Univ. SPo, has net advantages over the first ed. G. B. Rossi, *A Literatura Italian e as Literaturas de Lingua Portuguesa, 0, Telos, 1973, 224 pp., devotes four chaps to Brazilian lit. By the same author is *Letteratura Brasiliana, Naples, Cymba, 294 pp., a lit. history followed by an anthol. MGSL, 5 January, gives news of the publ. of Assis Brasil, *A Nova Literatura, Historia Critica da Literatura Brasileira. 0 Romance., SPo, Americana, 1973, the first vol. of a series designed to cover the novel, short story, poetry and lit. criticism of the last 15 years. N. N. Coelho has publ. R, Jose Olympio, Literatura e Linguagem, 389 pp., a course book which ranges very wide and often degenerates into lists of names, and *0 Ensino da Literatura, the first vol. of a projected 3-vol. work. Benedito Nunes, MGSL, 24 August, expresses reservations about Luis Costa Lima, *A Metamorfose do Silincio, R, Eldorado, in which C.L. applies the structuralist approaches enunciated in his *Estruturalismo e Teoria da Literatura, Petropolis, Vozes, 1973, to Guimaraes Rosa's `Buriti' and Mello Neto's Uma Faca so Lcimina. Despite the title, Ivan Cavalcanti Proenca, Literatura no Vesti- bular, R, Catedra, 117 pp., contains some worthwhile crit. material on Alencar's Senhora, J. Americo de Almeida's A Bagaceira, Cassiano Ricardo's Martim Cerere and J. J. Veiga's Os Cavalinhos de Plati plant°. Mention too must be made of * Teoria da Literatura, ed. L. A. de Azevedo Filho, R, Gernasa. I. B. Correia d'Araujo, OratOria Eficiente de Hoje, R, Agir, 291 pp., is disappointingly not a handbook of contemp. poetics but rather obvious advice on how to achieve clear and concise expression. From the same source, M. Ritter Nunes, 0 Estilo na 412 Latin-American Studies Comunicacdo, 134 pp., attempts to apply McLuhan's theories on mass communication to Brazilian Portuguese, with the threat to creative writings only too evident in the sections on Ìncor- recoes Evitaveis'. A. da Mata Machado Filho, Lingiiistica e Humanismo, Petropolis, Vozes, 194 pp., outlines modern trends in Linguistics but disappoints by failing to say anything of note about their application to the study of Brazilian lit. R. Barbosa, Àforismos, desaforismos e mortes', SLESPo, 25 August, sees Mario da Silva Brito, *Conversa Vai Conversa Vem, R, Civilizacdo Brasileira/InstNL, 135 pp., as an important testimony to S.B.'s efioca. J.-M. Massa, 'La Correspondance lusobresilienne de Phileas Lebesgue', Nouvelles Etudes Portugaises et Bresiliennes, Rennes, 9:4.1-51, claims that L.'s corr. with Ribeiro Couto, Xavier Marques, Coelho Neto and Mario Sete sheds light on the lit. àmbiente' of the 1900-14 period. Also noteworthy is G. Mendonca Teles, *Camoes e a Poesia Brasileira, R, MEC, 1973. N. Correa, 'A tapecaria lingiiistica de Os Sertoes', SLESPo, 23/3o June and 7 July, disagrees with Wilson Martin's view about the predominance of adjectives in Euclides, seeing the deployment of verbs as the essence of his style and ending with general considerations on E.'s choice of vocabulary. J. P. Ramos, Ìnterpretando o fenomeno Canudos', LBR, i t, no. 1:65-83, judiciously argues that it was an escape valve for the pent-up frustrations of the discredited Floriano regime. Ataliba Nogueira, *Antonio Conselheiro e Canudos has appeared SPo, Nacional, 182 pp. V. Chacon, Èlogio del ensayo', RCB, 37: 70-8, examines briefly Tobias Barreto, Silvio Romero and others. Benedito Nunes, `Vertentes', MGSL, 3 August, discusses the Carnival theme in Brazilian lit. with esp. ref. to Anibal Machado's Joao Ternura and R. Mourao's Cidade Calaboup.
