While peaceful protests, voter registration drives, and racial confrontations occurred throughout the United States, the government continued to send young Black men to Southeast Asia to preserve the "freedom" of the Vietnamese people. The irony of this situation lies in the fact that these soldiers were asked to fight a War in the name of democracy, to kill in order to secure rights that they themselves were being denied. Although many Black Americans saw military service as a means of escaping poor ghetto life, they often were confronted with the realities of discriminatory practices within the Army and the continuation of racism upon their return home. The poetry of Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, and YusefKomunyakaa explore what African American participation in the Vietanam War really meant. By using literary techniques unique to the Black Aesthetic and the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s, these poets lyrically showed how Black involvement in the War aided the dominant white culture in its attempt for racial genocide. While Baraka related the oppressed condition of the African American to that of oppression in Third World countries, Nikki Giovanni wrote to prove that the War was a waste of Black youth that could better be used in the struggle for Civil Rights in the United States. YusefKomunyakaa, writing from a veteran's perspective almost two decades later, showed how the Vietnam War both blurred and emphasized the racial divisions between Black and white soldiers, along with the Vietnamese people themselves. ii Dedications I dedicate this thesis to my family: my mother, for teaching me to always speak my mind; my father, for giving me inspiration to write and travel; and my brother, for proving to me that true strength comes from always resisting the war. iii Acknowledgments The inspiration for this thesis came from my experiences on the Semester at Sea Program. Because of this unique opportunity, I was able to crawl through the tunnels of the Viet Cong and sing Karaoke with the War' s survivors. Traveling through Vietnam and other countries exposed me to the incredible suffering of many people in Third World countries and has left me with the desire to help end the ignorance responsible for much of that suffering. According to Meredith Hindley, African American poetry of this period "wanted to inspire actions" (23). Subsequently, the works of writers like Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones) Nikki Giovanni, and YusefKomunyakaa, "became a type of activism in [themselves]" (2). This activism accomplished a new Black aesthetic that fused politics and poetry in a voice that would claim self-worth within and justice in the society without. These poets created art that not only fulfilled their own needs for emotional expression, but also showed the immense necessity for social change in America. At the peak of the Cold War, these three authors addressed racism and the white fear of communism in eye-opening lyrical fashion. After the "fall" of China in 1950 and an unprecedented decade of"duck-and­ cover'' atomic years, many Black poets began to question the integrity of the democratic system and ask about their own "inalienable" rights as American citizens. If the Soviets were the so­ called enemies, then why were African Americans in a "free" society still being denied the privileges of lighter-skinned citizens? And furthermore, how could the United States government ask Blacks to fight for the freedom of the Vietnamese people when its own policies were corrupt? By applying the literary and cultural history of African Americans, which necessarily includes the antecedents of Western and African cultural traditions in this thesis, I show how Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, and YusefKomunyakaa turned their poetry into both "art" and "propaganda." Although Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren and President Lyndon Johnson proposed Civil Rights actions by judicial and legislative mandate, many citizens' minds had been 2 warped by years of accepting racism. Thus, many well-intentioned Civil Rights policies were embraced as ideals, yet ignored socially. Black Americans began to see the need to speak for themselves, to use their own words to unite against the hypocrisy of an unjust War that could not deliver on the ideals for which it claimed. Not only did many Black writers feel the drive to change life on the homefront, but they also aimed to avoid further African American involvement in Vietnam. Like Plato they too believed that poetry could stop warfare. According to Howard Nemerov in Reflections on Poetry and Poetics: Plato actually seems to believe, in a famous place in The Republic, that both poetry and ... a national conscience, or a national morale at any rate, really existed. So strongly did he believe in the relationship between them that their libertine and effeminate individualism might impair the soldiers' will to fight. (147) Unlike Plato, these poets suggest poetry to end War rather that ban the poets in order to sustain it. African American poetry of the Vietnam War reflects both the national, political conscience and a culturaL historical pride unique to the Black American. While many early Black American texts equated the struggle for freedom with the acceptance of the Christian faith and imitation of the traditionally "moral" white man, the Black Arts Movement of the sixties reflected a subculture dissatisfied with this delusion. The Black Arts Movement poets challenged the false logic of the good slave expected to live out life in godly submission to white masters with death as the price of freedom. Although earlier African American writers like Frederick Douglass of the 19th century and 0 laudah Equiano of the 17th century addressed the then-literate majority of white congregations, the works ofBaraka

    A Legal Analysis of the Enemy Property Act of Bangladesh Samir Kalra, Esq. and Arvind Chandrakantan, M.D. Abstract: The designation of minority owned land as “Enemy Property” under the provisions of the Enemy Property Act (EPA), sanctioned a vast and unparalleled appropriation of land in Bangladesh, and the erstwhile East Pakistan. Initially instituted by the Government of Pakistan in 1965, the EPA encompassed a series of discriminatory property laws targeting primarily Hindus and tribal communities in the eastern portion of the country (Bangladesh). After achieving independence from Pakistan in 1971, the newly formed Republic of Bangladesh retained the inequitable provisions of the EPA through the Vested Property Act (VPA). This paper will trace the evolution of the EPA and its subsequent versions, and provide an in- depth analysis of the Act in the context of international jurisprudence and human rights law. I. Introduction In 1965, following the outbreak of war between India and Pakistan, the military government of Pakistan promulgated one of history’s most racist and discriminatory laws, the Enemy Property Act (EPA). Years later, the United State Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a quasi-governmental body responsible for promoting religious freedom throughout the world, described the EPA as “one of Pakistan’s key instruments of anti-Hindu discrimination,” which was used “selectively to seize Hindu- owned property after the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War...”1 Bangladesh, the successor state to Pakistan’s East Bengal Province, adopted the EPA after gaining independence in 1971, and each successive administration has continued this repressive law in one form or the other, often using it to “reward well- connected members of the Muslim majority community.”2 By labeling Hindus and other minorities as “enemies” of the state in the erstwhile East Pakistan and Bangladesh, the EPA and its subsequent versions, not only led to a massive appropriation of Hindu owned land, but also precipitated a drastic decline in the Hindu population.

    Using Poetry to Teach Children About the Civil Rights Movement Elouise Payton Objectives After teaching this unit, I hope that my students will be able to identify with their own history and value their own background and identities. I plan to provide my students with opportunities to reflect upon what they are learning and give them the opportunity to express their feelings in positive ways. I want to support them as they interact and think more critically about their own identities, cultural experiences and the world that they live in. Likewise, in this unit my students will learn about the active roles that African American children and others played in reforming their communities during the era. Furthermore, it is my hope that my students will view themselves as agents of change; understand that they too are active participants in history and that they can play key roles in shaping their own lives and communities. I want my students to read interesting texts related to the Civil Rights Era and be able to discuss, question, think, and infer what is happening in them. This can be accomplished as students respond to texts by asking questions, paraphrasing important information, creating visual images, making comparisons, analyzing and summarizing what they have learned. My students will be encouraged to read more literature written by and about African Americans to support their understanding of the events that happened during the era. I will have students interview relatives and have conversations with their relatives about what they have learned about the history of the Civil Rights Movement.

Skinner, Advisor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Barry Shank 1 Copyrighted by Matthew Alan Campbell 2019 2 Abstract For members of the United States Armed Forces, communicating with one’s loved ones has taken many forms, employing every available medium from the telegraph to Twitter. My project examines one particular mode of exchange—“audio letters”—during one of the US military’s most trying and traumatic periods, the Vietnam War. By making possible the transmission of the embodied voice, experiential soundscapes, and personalized popular culture to zones generally restricted to purely written or typed correspondence, these recordings enabled forms of romantic, platonic, and familial intimacy beyond that of the written word. More specifically, I will examine the impact of war and its sustained separations on the creative and improvisational use of prosthetic culture, technologies that allow human beings to extend and manipulate aspects of their person beyond their own bodies. Reel-to-reel was part of a constellation of amateur recording technologies, including Super 8mm film, Polaroid photography, and the Kodak slide carousel, which, for the first time, allowed average Americans the ability to capture, reify, and share their life experiences in multiple modalities, resulting in the construction of a set of media-inflected subjectivities (at home) and intimate intersubjectivities developed across spatiotemporal divides.

    Treatment of American Prisoners of War In Southeast Asia 1961-1973 By John N. Powers The years 1961 to 1973 are commonly used when studying American POWs during the Vietnam War, even though history books generally refer to the years 1964 to 1973 in defining that war. Americans were captured as early as 1954 and as late as 1975. In these pages the years 1961 to 1973 will be used. Americans were held prisoner by the North Vietnamese in North Vietnam, the Viet Cong (and their political arm the National Liberation Front) in South Vietnam, and the Pathet Lao in Laos. This article will not discuss those Americans held in Cambodia and China. The Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) lists 687 American Prisoners of War who were returned alive by the Vietnamese from 1961 through 1976. Of this number, 72 were returned prior to the release of the bulk of the POWs in Operation Homecoming in 1973. Twelve of these early releases came from North Vietnam. DPMO figures list thirty-six successful escapes, thirty-four of them in South Vietnam and two in Laos. There were more than those thirty-six escapes, including some from prison camps in Hanoi itself. Some escapes ended in recapture within hours, some individuals were not recaptured for days, and some were simply never seen again. There were individuals who escaped multiple times, in both North and South Vietnam. However, only thirty- six American prisoners of war escaped and reached American forces. Of those thirty- six successful attempts, twenty-eight of them escaped within their first month of captivity.

Though generally known for his revolutionary work in poetry, Williams was also quite an experi- mentalist in prose, claiming in Spring and All that prose and verse “are phases of the same thing” (144). Williams showed concern for the future of American litera- ture in general, including that of the novel. In response to what he viewed as spe- cific problems facing the American novel, problems with American language, and problems inherent in the nature of language itself, Williams created The Great American Novel in 1923. Williams was troubled by the derivative nature of American novels of the time, their lack of originality, and their dependence upon European models; the exhausted material and cliché- ridden language of the his- torical novels of his day; the tendency of such novels to oversimplify or misrepre- sent the American experience; and the formulaic quality of genres such as detec- tive novels.

And I'm Ed Folsom, Professor of English at the University of Iowa. And it's our pleasure to welcome you to the first session of our Massive Open Online Course, "Whitman's Civil War: Writing and Imaging Loss, Death, and Disaster." Ed and I began composing introductions and commentaries about Whitman's Civil War writings and poetry and prose last summer. And it's interesting to think about this at a moment in our history: we began our writing journey for this MOOC a hundred and fifty years after the end of the Civil War. At a moment in American history where, because of the deaths in Ferguson, Missouri, and in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as rippling around the world - wars in Iraq, in Syria, in Libya, and Yemen, and on and on, we are thinking that, Whitman's attempts to write and image loss and death and disaster have broad applicability. That, what he's trying to do with this great disaster in American history is something that writers face again and again in the 20th century, the bloodiest century of all, and now in our own century, where the forces of chaos seem often to be overwhelming. How did Whitman do that?
