Although we would revise that statement to read "something is happening to the way we think about literature," we would see the irony in citing a cultural anthropologist to announce a change in the direction of literary study. Indeed, given the themes of recent scholarship, public debate, and professional chatter, we might even suggest that literary study is being revised into cultural studies. To some, this change may seem no more than an extension of conventional practice. We have always believed that studying culture was virtually synonymous with studying literature, because culture, in Matthew Arnold's sense of the word, referred to those great works of literature that contained "the best that has been known and thought" (42). We have also believed that our literature students needed cultural "background:' We have introduced them to historical periods (the Middle Ages), artistic monuments (the Elizabethan stage), and intel- lectual movements (Romanticism) so that they could understand the forces that influenced the literature we have asked them to interpret. For others, however, this shift toward cultural studies has prompted a revolution in theory and practice. The problem begins with the word culture. Although Arnold used it to -'2fine an exclusive and coherent literary tradition, Raymond Williams sees it as "one of the two or three most complicated words in the English language" (1983, 87). Its historical origins twist through the worlds of art and work, and its current usage evokes both "material production" and "signifying and symbolic systems" (91). Borrowing insights from disciplines as diverse as anthropology, linguistics, and philosophy, contemporary theorists have explored the multiple meanings of culture to determine how those meanings enrich and complicate our study of literature. Their speculation has uncovered questions that encourage teachers of literature to rethink the funda- mental assumptions of their practice: How do words and worlds vii viii Introduction interact? How does this interaction create cultural contexts? How do texts reproduce traces of those contexts? What is a literary text? How does a literary text relate to other texts? What do we do when we study texts, and which

    ARC Enterprise: Getting a Business Start-up Out of the Pit It was a bright and sunny Monday morning. Arvin R. Costanilla, a recent graduate at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) with a Bachelor’s of Science in Agribusiness Management (BSABM), was sipping a hot cup of coffee while gazing at the financial reports provided by his accountant. He sighed in disappointment over the poor financial performance of his fruit juice processing business, ARC Enterprise. During college, Costanilla was selected to participate in a project that helped students harness opportunities from food processing techniques and methods developed by UPLB. His mentors encouraged him to pursue the production of functional fruit and vegetable juices. Functional fruit juices, unlike traditional fruit juices, utilized fruits that were known to have high level of important nutrients. The idea to enter the fruit juice industry made sense to Costanilla since Filipino consumers had become more health conscious recently.1 Costanilla’s trial production runs were financed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). A financial grant was awarded by DOST to UPLB to support promising student business start-ups. Each selected student was provided with up to Php 15,000 for the six-month implementation period of their business start-up. Raw material support was also provided by DOST. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Martin Williams [1924-1992] was born in Richmond Virginia and educated at the University of Virginia (BA 1948), the University of Pennsylvania (MA 1950) and Columbia University. He was a nationally known critic, specializing in jazz and American popular culture. He wrote for major jazz periodicals, especially Down Beat, co-founded The Jazz Review and was the author of numerous books on jazz. His book The Jazz Tradition won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music criticism in 1973. From 1971-1981 he directed the Jazz and American Culture Programs at the Smithsonian Institution, where he compiled two widely respected collections of recordings, The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, and The Smithsonian Collection of Big Band Jazz. His liner notes for the latter won a Grammy Award.     Cultural Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution Introduction In his poem, The Second Coming (1919), William Butler Yeats captured the moment we are now experiencing: Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. As we see the deterioration of the institutions created and fostered after the Second World War to create a climate in which peace and prosperity could flourish in Europe and beyond, it is important to understand the role played by diplomacy in securing the stability and strengthening the shared values of freedom and democracy that have marked this era for the nations of the world. It is most instructive to read the Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy, in which he encouraged Americans not only to do good things for their own country, but to do good things in the world. The creation of the Peace Corps is an example of the kind of spirit that put young American volunteers into some of the poorest nations in an effort to improve the standard of living for people around the globe. We knew we were leaders; we knew that we had many political and economic and social advantages. There was an impetus to share this wealth. Generosity, not greed, was the motivation of that generation. Of course, this did not begin with Kennedy. It was preceded by the Marshall Plan, one of the only times in history that the conqueror decided to rebuild the country of the vanquished foe.
