A Teaching Guide for History of Psychology www.feministvoices.com 1 Psychology’s Feminist Voices in the Classroom A Teaching Guide for the History of Psychology Instructor Compiled by Jennifer Bazar, Elissa Rodkey, and Jacy Young One of the goals of Psychology’s Feminist Voices is to serve as a teaching resource. To facilitate the process of incorporating PFV into the History of Psychology course, we have created this document. Below you will find two primary sections: (1) Lectures and (2) Assignments. (1) Lectures: In this section you will find subject headings of topics often covered in History of Psychology courses. Under each heading, we have provided an example of the relevant career, research, and/or life experiences of a woman featured on the Psychology’s Feminist Voices site that would augment a lecture on that particular topic. Below this description is a list of additional women whose histories would be well-suited to lectures on that topic. (2) Assignments: In this section you will find several suggestions for assignments that draw on the material and content available on Psychology’s Feminist Voices that you can use in your History of Psychology course. The material in this guide is intended only as a suggestion and should not be read as a “complete” list of all the ways Psychology’s Feminist Voices could be used in your courses. His research interest involves the in- tersection between knowledge organization, cognitive psychology, sociology of knowledge, and cultural an- thropology. Currently, he is working on a dissertation project on the organizing principle of integrative levels of knowing. Abstract: This article provides a historical overview and conceptual clarification of the idea of integrative lev- els as an organizing principle. It will be demonstrated that this concept has found different articulations (e.g., levels of integration, levels of organization, levels of complexity, levels of granularity, nested hierarchy, specifi- cation hierarchy, hierarchical integration, progressive integration, holarchy, superformation, self-organization cycles) and widespread appli- cations based on various, often unrelated theoretical and disciplinary backgrounds. In order to determine its role in the field of knowledge organization, some common misconceptions and major criticisms will be reconsidered in light of a broader multidisciplinary context. In particular, it will be shown how this organizing principle has been fruitfully applied to human-related research areas such as psychology, social sciences, or humanities in terms of integrative levels of knowing. -

In 1976, the animal liberation movement made experiments conducted on cats at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) one of its earliest successful targets. Although the scientific consensus was that Aronson was not particularly cruel or abusive, the AMNH was selected due to the visibility of the institution, the pet-like status of the animals, and the seeming perversity of studying non-human sexuality. I contextualize the controversy in terms of the changing meaning of utilitarian ethics in justifying animal experimentation. The redefinition of ‘surgeries’ as ‘mutilations’ reflected an encounter between the behavioural sciences and social movements. One of the aims of the late 1960s civil rights movements was to heighten Americans’ sensitivity to differing experiences of suffering. The AMNH protesters drew inspir- ation from a revived utilitarian ethics of universal organismic pain across the lines of species. This episode was also emblematic of the emergence of an anti-statist, neo-liberal ethos in science. -

A History of Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology): Now You See It, Now You Don’T, Now You See It
I 2 1 A HISTORY OF DIVISION 6 (BEHAVIORAL NEUROSCIENCE AND COMPARATIVE PSYCHOLOGY): NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T, NOW YOU SEE IT DONALD A. DEWSBURY In 1995, Division 6 of the American Psychological Association (APA) adopted a new name: the Division of Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology. Known by its original name, the Division of Physiological and Comparative Psychology, since its founding, Division 6 has been a focus for the interests of the comparative and physiological approaches in psychology since the inception of the division structure. It has been through Division 6 that physiological and comparative psychol- ogists have found representation within the APA and have worked to en- sure a place for their approaches within the rich fabric of U.S. psychology. Although it was a charter division established during the 1940s, the history of Division 6 is discontinuous; it disappeared in 1948, only to reap- pear in 1963, and it may be in danger of disappearing once more. Division 6 can boast of outstanding accomplishments, but it has been beset by se- rious difficulties as well. Underlying some of the major shifts in the early history of the division is the question of the unity or diversity of experi- There are many individuals who merit acknowledgment for providing various materials and information included in this history and for answering my various letters and pesterings.
