However, any renewal results in major morphological, physiognomic, functional or social changes, which imply changes in the meanings encoded in space. These transformations are not always welcome and they may lead to public discussions and conflicts. Skopje 2014 is a project within which such controversial transformations have been taking place. The area surrounding the Vardar River and its banks plays a major role here. On the river banks monumental buildings were erected, bridges over the river were modernised and new ones, decorated with monuments, were built for pedestrians. Bridges can be considered a valuable component of any urban infrastructure as they link different parts of a settlement unit (in the case of Skopje – left (northern) bank and the right (southern) bank; Albanian and Macedonian), improve transport, facilitate trade and cultural exchange. In this context, referring to Lotman’s semiosphere theory, they may become borders of semiotic space, which acts as a filter that facilitates the penetration of codes and cultural texts. Yet, in multicultural Skopje meanings attached to bridges seem to lead to social inequalities as they glorify what is Macedonian and degrade the Albanian element. -

Exarch Josif I (1840-1915) (real name Lazar Yovchev) is a distinguished Bulgarian Orthodox cleric. He was Bishop of Vidin, Metropolitan of the Lovech Diocese and Bulgarian Exarch – Head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Lazar Yovchev was born on the 5 of May 1840 in the enlightened town of Kalopher at the foot of the Balkan mountain. Studious and curious student during the primary school, he later became a teaching assistant of Botio Petkov, well known teacher in Kalopher and abroad. Supported by affuent Kalopher citizens living in Tzarigrad (Istanbul) he continued his studies in the Grand People’s School in Fener (in Turkish - Fener Rum Erkek Lisesi) and later in the French College (Tzarigrad). With the fnancial help of the Kalopher community he enrolled in 1864 in the prestigious Literary Faculty of the Sorbonne University (Paris). After three years study there he transferred to the Law School of the same university, which he graduated with a Bachelor degree and license to practice law. After six years in France, Lazar Yovchev returns to Tzarigrad and works at the Central Court of Commerce. In the same time he is active in political journalism and translation. He became a Board Member of the Macedonian Bulgarian Union (Makedonska Bylgarska Drujina). He was also invited to become a Secretary of the Joined Exarchate Council (Smesen Exarchiiski Syvet). Thanks to respect and popularity and without a formal ecclesiastical education, in 1872 the newly ordained monk becomes Coadjutor of the Exarch (equal to a Bishop reverence) under the monk name Yossif. In the next 3-4 years Bishop Yossif actively participates in the organization of the newly independent Bulgarian Church, travels the Bulgarian lands, meets representatives of the Great Powers, owing to his excellence in French, but mostly because of his ability to negotiate and persuade. -

This is a modest one-nave building with an entrance on the west and the apse on the east side. In order to explain a large deviation of the longitudinal axis of the church from the south- east direction, the following has been done: 1) deviation of the longitudinal axis of the church from the east direction (24o to the NE) was accurately measured; 2) a corresponding sector of true horizon of the church was constructed in the orthographic transverse map projection; 3) the position of the point where ends the line of observation in the vertical axis of the church and the position of the point of actual Sunrise of Summer Solstice were determined topographically on the true horizon. Since the distance between these points is about 1.5o, it can be said that the proto- master probably founded the Church St Nicholas on the basis of Summer Solstice. A direct check made on 21st of June, 2011 confirmed the accuracy of the applied method. This article is devoted to the one of the best known female rulers of medieval Serbia – prin- cess Milica, wife of the prince Lazar Hrebeljanovi ć, who had lost his live during the famous Battle of Kosovo Field in 1389. After the death of her husband, Milica founded the Ljubo- stinja monastery and became the nun Jevgenija. She was a close friend to the famous Serbian poet Jefimija, who accompanied princess Milica in the diplomatic mission to the Sultan’s court in 1398/1399. She died in 1405. She was canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church. She appears also – as „tsaritsa Milica” – in Serbian folklore (epic poetry). DOI: 10.23817/strans.10-28 Diana Cărburean Independent researcher/ Romania The Byzantine legal standard transposition strategies into the Romanian regulatory texts of the 17th century Abstract The Byzantine legal standard transposition strategies into the Romanian regulatory texts of the 17th century Unlike the Canon law texts available in the Romanian principalities – Moldavia and Wal- lachia – falling under the Slavic influence, the first legal acts which are subscribed to the secular law and which appear in 1646 [Carte Românească de Învățătură (en. Romanian Book of Learning) or Pravila lui Vasile Lupu (en. Vasile Lupu’s Code of Laws)] and in 1652 [Îndrep- tarea legii (en. The Law’s Rectification) orPravila lui Matei Basarab (en. Matei Basarab’s Code of Laws)] fall under the Greek-Byzantine influence. The present article aims to provide some information regarding the translation mechanisms applied by the Moldavian and Wallachian scholars of the 17th century who aimed at transposing the Byzantine Legal Standard to the everyday life of the two above mentioned Romanian principalities by means of fundamental procedures, such as “analysis (with the underlying meaning determination), transfer, restruc- turing, and testing” (Nida, 2004: 85) of the source message. The most precious information related to the translation process of those times is provided by the cases of untranslatability generated by the legal and terminological gap between the Receiver and the Transmitter. The identification and classification of these cases, but also the highlighting of the solutions the translator found to solve them, represent important steps in understanding the equivalenting process of two unequal legal systems that took place centuries ago in Eastern Europe, as illus- trated by the case of the two Romanian principalities and the Greek-Byzantine one. -
