  • Volksabstimmung Vom 7. März 2021: Mountainbike
    28. Januar 2021 | Nr. 4 Volksabstimmung vom 7.

  • Economic Significance of Cableways Illustrated by the Example of Titlis Rotair in Engelberg, Near to Lucerne, Switzerland
Economic Significance of Cableways Illustrated by the Example of Titlis Rotair in Engelberg, near to Lucerne, Switzerland by Eugenio Rüegger1 Structure of Lecture: 1. Geography / Transportation 2. History 3. Important Background Information on Engelberg 4. Tourism in Switzerland 5. Facts & Figures 6. Business Management 7. Economic Significance for Engelberg Tourist Resort 8. Connection of Tourism with Alpine Agriculture 9. Cableway Companies and Ecology 10. Cableway Companies and their Social Environment 11. Conclusions 1. Geography / Transportation Engelberg is situated in an alpine valley at the base of Mount Titlis at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level (3,280 ft.). In the commuter belt of Northern- and Central Switzerland, Mount Titlis is the nearest beauty spot, which, thanks to the glacier on top, guarantees for ice and snow all year round. Getting to Engelberg is easy. The LSE (train between Lucerne and Engelberg) has been in service for 100 years now, and the road that connects Lucerne with the resort is in perfect condition as well. A car ride from Lucerne to Engelberg takes about half an hour. Therefore Engelberg does not profit from vacation tourism only, but also from day trip business. It is no use to mention that day trip business, of course, involves disadvantages as well. On the other hand, Titlis Rotair is particularly interested in achieving a better base in use of capacity during the week. This again is related with the supply of hotels in the tourist resort. Titlis Rotair operates 20 different transportation facilities, thereby offering ski runs of all levels of difficulty.

•• • THE FUHRERBUCH OF ANDREAS JAUN 219 THE FOHRERBUCH OF ANDREAS JAUN BY D. F. 0. DANGAR NDREAS }AUN of Meiringen was born on September 27, I8zg, and died in his seventy-third year on May I 3, I 902. liis career is not comparable with those of some of the great guides of Meiringen. IV1ost of his time was spent in his own district and he seldom went very far afield, but he performed some good work and made several new expeditions. His Fiihrerbuch was issued on June I, I 863, and extends over a period of thirty years. Unfortunately it does not cover the whole of his Alpine career, and there are several years without any entries. Nevertheless, it contains much of interest and throws fresh light upon the doings of some of the early members of the Alpine Club. We kno"'· that J aun was climbing before I 863 from the fact that he accompanied L·eslie Stephen when he ' opened a passage between Rosenlaui and the Grimsel by crossing theWeitsattel.' 1 The first entry, dated July 26, I 863, is over the signature of John Tyndall, who was accompanied by P. L. Sclater, and describes the journey from Stein to the Grimsel of which an acc.ount can be found in Hours of Exercise in the A~ps. Even at this early stage of Jaun's career Tyndall thinks he ' can be safely recommended as a highly competent mountain and glacier guide.' Bennen joined the party for the crossing of the Oberaarjoch, and after leaving Tyndall at the Eggishorn, Sclater and Jaun returned to the Grimsel and on the following day, without a second guide, went to Meiringen over the Gauli Pass.

  • Engelberg-Titlis: Destination & History
Engelberg-Titlis: Destination & history Engelberg-Titlis: The largest winter and summer resort near Lake Lucerne at the foot of Mount Titlis lies 1000 metres above sea level. The resort has a long, eventful history, influenced by the Benedictine Monastery. Engelberg belongs to Canton Obwalden, although no inhabitant of Engelberg would call him- or herself an "Obwaldener" – because an “Engelberger” is quite simply an “Engelberger”... Facts and Figures The largest holiday and leisure destination in Central Switzerland has a mere 4,300 inhabitants. Annually, more than 780,000 overnight stays are registered 2,000 hotel beds (including the igloo village), 340 guest-house beds, 1150 beds in dormitory accommodations and approx. 200 holiday flats, plus the campsite hotel, which is open all year. Several attractive restaurants welcome guests with a choice of local and international dishes, while bars, discos and pubs cover evening entertainment. The economic structure of Engelberg is divided into three main areas: 76.2% service industry, 15.6% trade and 8.2% agriculture and forestry. From a commercial point of view, nearly 90% of Engelberg's population is directly or indirectly dependent on tourism.
