The Education of Alexander and Nicholas Pavlovich Romanov The
Agata Strzelczyk DOI: 10.14746/bhw.2017.36.8 Department of History Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań The education of Alexander and Nicholas Pavlovich Romanov Abstract This article concerns two very different ways and methods of upbringing of two Russian tsars – Alexander the First and Nicholas the First. Although they were brothers, one was born nearly twen- ty years before the second and that influenced their future. Alexander, born in 1777 was the first son of the successor to the throne and was raised from the beginning as the future ruler. The person who shaped his education the most was his grandmother, empress Catherine the Second. She appoint- ed the Swiss philosopher La Harpe as his teacher and wanted Alexander to become the enlightened monarch. Nicholas, on the other hand, was never meant to rule and was never prepared for it. He was born is 1796 as the ninth child and third son and by the will of his parents, Tsar Paul I and Tsarina Maria Fyodorovna he received education more suitable for a soldier than a tsar, but he eventually as- cended to the throne after Alexander died. One may ask how these differences influenced them and how they shaped their personalities as people and as rulers. Keywords: Romanov Children, Alexander I and Nicholas I, education, upbringing The education of Alexander and Nicholas Pavlovich Romanov Among the ten children of Tsar Paul I and Tsarina Maria Feodorovna, two sons – the oldest Alexander and Nicholas, the second youngest son – took the Russian throne. These two brothers and two rulers differed in many respects, from their characters, through poli- tics, views on Russia’s place in Europe, to circumstances surrounding their reign. -

Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski , then a close associate of Alexander I, used the young tsar’s enthusiasm for reforming the country, including the educational system. The already implemented reforms encompassed also the territories of the Russian partition. The unique feature of the Vilnius Scientific District created at that time was the possibility of teaching in the Polish language in all types of schools. It was the school superintendent Prince A. J. Czartoryski who deserved credit for that - due to his considerable influence upon the tsar’s policy towards the Poles. After the change in the position of the superintendent (1824) and the death of Alexander I (1825), the authorities’ policy on the Polish educational system became stricter, and after the fall of the November Uprising Polish educational institutions practically disappeared. The source base of the text is constituted by the archival materials stored in the State Historical Archives in Kiev and Vilnius as well as in the Library of The Vilnius University. -

Memory of the World International Register Collections of the 19th century of the Polish Historical and Literary Society / Polish Library in Paris / Adam Mickiewicz Museum (Poland) 2012-26 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) The Polish Library in Paris (Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris—BPP) was created in 1838 by Polish political émigrés who had found shelter in the French capital. This is where they could carry on various actions aiming at gaining back the independence of the State which had been lost at the end of the 18th century. Led by the wave of ideologies linked to independence and people’s freedom movements arisen in Europe in the early 19th century, it was established as a peaceful form aiming at fighting for freedom and independence. In the 19th century, Europe built places of memory such as libraries and archives in the independence States. At that time, the BPP acted as a means of substitution and continuity of the institutions destroyed by the foreign forces occupying the Polish territories. It came to birth thanks to the efforts carried out by the émigrés and the support of European intellectual elites as well as the authorities of the French State. The latter felt involved in the idea originating the creation of the BPP and they supported the action of a nation whose fight for independence, during the Uprising of 1831, had moved many European nations, aroused their admiration and strengthened their own aspirations for independence. The Polish Library gathered the scattered sources which enabled to document the history of Poland, along with the publications carried out by the emigration. -

dr hab. Daniel Grinberg, prof. UDC 327.29 (4 -14) BBK 66.0 Pavlo Lodyn BOHDAN OSADCHUK’S ROLE IN THE INTEGRATION CONCEPTS DEVELOPMENT IN THE CENTRAL-EASTERN EUROPE The geopolitical structure in the Central-Eastern Europe needed the transformation after World War II. The new system of state security was to include the independence of countries in the region and the regional integration. The Ukrainian-Polish reconciliation was the basis for these projects. The Ukrainian political scientist and journalist Bohdan Osadchuk (1920 - 2011) was involved actively in the development and promotion of such projects as Intermarium and others. Key words: Intermarium, the Ukrainian-Polish reconciliation, the Central-Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Poland. The situation in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) had a great influence on international security in the bipolar world. The fragmentation of the region was the root cause of the independence loss and the occupation of the region by Germany and the Soviet Union. The facts of getting independence in the region, overcoming of totalitarianism and the Soviet domination required the development of a new configuration of international relations, which would prevent a repetition of the situation in the years of 1939 – 1945. The existing security configuration needed a substantial transformation. The new regional order had to include the independence of CEE countries, the achievement of the international reconciliation and integration, intensification of cooperation. In exile, the intellectual elites of the nations that lost their independence developed projects of a new geopolitical order. Bohdan Osadchuk (1920 – 2011) was the Ukrainian historian, political scientist and journalist. He was a regular author of articles in the Polish émigré journal “Kultura” that was published by Jerzy Giedroyc. -

The Case of Karta Dawnej Polski and Hôtel Lambert's Concepts of The
The failure of the November uprising in 1831 and the resultant Great Polish Emigration not only caused the massive exodus of elites from the Polish Kingdom to western Europe and, consequently, the organization of pro-independence activities from their exile, but also highly influenced the discourse about the geographical shape and political nature of the (desired) future Polish state. The majority of this discourse was represented by memo- randa and newspapers, yet there were also other relevant sources to promote the ideas of various factions. In my study I suggest that cartographical representations have also played an important role in both of the mentioned levels of discourse. This conclusion was made as a result of the analysis of Karta dawnej Polski, the only map of the former Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth in its pre-1772 borders created by émigrés. This project was led by Wojciech Chrzanowski and was under the patronage of the aristocratic faction led by Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski (known as Hôtel Lambert). By applying the methodo- logical approach, which has been presented by John Brian Harley, and focusing on the historical and anthropological attributes of the map rather than solely on its empirical de- scription, I conclude with the suggestion that this map communicated various narratives at both levels of discourse. The most evident was its military narrative, which has promoted the idea of an armed uprising as the only possible way to restore an independent Polish state. The second concerned the ideas cultivated by the representatives of Hôtel Lambert regarding the shape and nature of a future state. -

The Jagiellonian Idea As Expression of Political Culture: Core Constitutive Values and Their Possible Contemporary Implementations
ARTICLES THE JAGIELLONIAN IDEA DOI: https://doi.org/10.12797/Politeja.14.2017.51.02 Monika BANAŚ Jagiellonian University in Kraków [email protected] THE JAGIELLONIAN IDEA AS EXPRESSION OF POLITICAL CULTURE: CORE CONSTITUTIVE VALUES AND THEIR POSSIBLE CONTEMPORARY IMPLEMENTATIONS ABSTRACT The article aims to discuss the concept of political culture as a powerful tool for shaping thoughts and actions of individuals and communities (societies). By elaborating on the Jagiellonian Idea (JI) – its specific features and implementa- tion, the author seeks to provide answers to several questions including: what made the JI a vibrant political and social concept being undertaken over cen- turies by some politicians, social leaders, researchers and scholars – is it just an attractive narrative which recalls times when Poland was a powerful state or is it a realistic program still applicable to contemporary societies? What kind of features of the JI concept may be selected, adjusted and developed today in the international and intercivizational dimensions? If at all possible, thus by what kind of means and under what conditions? These and other aspects of the JI as a specific expression of political culture are the core of the article. Key words: the Jagiellonian idea, political culture, values, identities INTRODUCTION The Jagiellonian idea is one of those phenomena whose interpretation often leads to intense disputes and sometimes even deeper divisions in – not only scientific – commu- nities interested in history, politics or political culture. This idea refers to a special set of concepts which unify neighbouring nations as well as political and social structures by peaceful means.
