In “An Act concerning slaves and servants,” New York prohibited slavetrading except when it amounted to transportation for crime (this would be re-enacted with amendments on March 31, 1817). “... And be it further enacted, That no slave shall hereafter be imported or brought into this State, unless the person importing or bringing such slave shall be coming into this State with intent to reside permanently therein and shall have resided without this State, and also have owned such slave at least during one year next preceding the importing or bringing in of such slave,” etc. A certificate, sworn to, must be obtained; any violation of this act or neglect to take out such certificate will result in freedom to the slave. Any sale or limited transfer of any person hereafter imported to be a public offence, under penalty of $250, and freedom to the slave transferred. The export of slaves or of any person freed by this act is forbidden, under penalty of $250 and freedom to the slave. Transportation for crime is permitted. INDEX PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF 1836 Carsten Niebuhr had made, in 1778, copies of cuneiform inscriptions at Persepolis, and brought them to France, and at this point Professor Eugène Burnouf figured out the first of these inscriptions in Old Persian cuneiform. It amounted to a list of the satrapies of Darius I (Dariush the Great, 522-486 BCE, the most successful ruler of the Achaemenid dynasty and the most effective administrator of the Persian Empire). On the basis of this discovery he was able to construct, for the decipherment of the remainder of these inscriptions, an alphabet of thirty characters which has turned out to be almost entirely accurate. Professor François Pierre Guillaume Guizot was a member of three of the five academies into which the Institute of France is divided. The Academy of Moral and Political Science owed its restoration to him, and in 1832 he had been one of its first associates. The Academy of Inscriptions and Belles Lettres had elected him in 1833 as the successor to M Dacier. In this year, therefore, he was chosen to be a member of the French Academy (Académie française). HDT WHAT? INDEX PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF 1837 Henry Rawlinson made a copy of inscriptions at Behistun in Persia that consisted of identical texts in the three official languages of the Persian empire (Old Persian, Babylonian, and Elamite), and had been carved during the reign of Darius I (Dariush the Great, 522-486 BCE, the most successful ruler of the Achaemenid dynasty and the most effective administrator of the Persian Empire). He was able to translate the opening paragraphs for the benefit of the Royal Asiatic Society. However, before he published this work he became acquainted with the recent discoveries made by Professor Eugène Burnouf, and recognized that he needed to reconsider some of this inferences. His work would not be published until 1847-1849. HDT WHAT? INDEX PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF 1840 From this year into 1847 Professor Eugène Burnouf would be publishing, in three folio volumes, the Sanskrit text and a French translation of the BHAGAVATA PURANA OU HISTOIRE POÉTIQUE DE KRICHNA. HDT WHAT? INDEX PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF PROFESSOR EUGÈNE BURNOUF 1843 April: In this month and the following one, two articles on Buddhist thought by Professor Eugène Burnouf were appearing in La Revue Indépendante, a prominent French journal which was presumably being stocked by Miss Elizabeth Palmer Peabody at her bookstore in downtown Boston. This month’s article was entitled Fragments des Prédications de Buddha. Professor Burnouf was the 1st to translate the LOTUS SUTRA from Sanskrit into a European language and eventually Henry Thoreau would possess a personal copy of the 1852 edition of his LE LOTUS DE LA BONNE LOI, TRADUIT DU SANSCRIT, ACCOMPAGNÉ D’UN COMMENTAIRE ET DE VINGT ET UN MÉMOIRES RELATIFS AU BUDDHISME, PAR M. E. BURNOUF (Paris: Imprimerie nationale). An English translation of this French translation of Chapter V of the Sanskrit of THE LOTUS SUTRA would appear in THE DIAL for January 1844, and presumably either Thoreau or Peabody, busy as beavers, prepared that translation — which would amount to the very 1st presentation of any part of this essential Buddhist scripture in the English language! THOREAU AND CHINA Thoreau edited this issue (Volume III, Number 4) of THE DIAL. THE DIAL, APRIL 1843 The issue carried 21 quotes in its “Ethnical Scriptures: Sayings of Confucius” section, but these are not the ones which Thoreau would (probably later in this same year) retranslate from the French of M.J. Pauthier’s CONFUCIUS ET MENCIUS. Thoreau was still relying upon English editions, at least three of which he had at this point perused, and the translation he was relying upon at this point was one made in 1809 by the Reverend Joshua J. Marshman.1 JOSHUA J. MARSHMAN Heaven speaks, but what language does it use to preach to men, that there is a sovereign principle from which all things depend; a sovereign principle which makes them act and move? Its motion is its language; it reduces the seasons to their time; it agitates nature, it makes it produce. This silence is eloquent. (ANALECTS or LUN-YÜ, one of THE FOUR BOOKS), Book XVII, Chapter 19) MENCIUS LIGHT FROM CHINA 1. We know he read the English translation by Father Couplet, a Jesuit in China from 1658 to 1680, which had been in 1687 the very first notice of the writings of Confucius for an European audience, in an 1835 edition, plus two by a Baptist missionary in India in 1809, the Reverend Joshua J. Marshman, and one done in 1828 by David Collie, a member of the London Missionary Society who was at one time the principal of the Protestant Anglo-Chinese College at Malacca. HDT WHAT? Chee says, if in the morning I hear about the right way, and in the evening die, I can be happy. 2. A man’s life is properly connected with virtue. The life of the evil man is preserved by mere good fortune. 3. Coarse rice for food, water to drink, and the bended arm for a pillow — happiness may be enjoyed even in these. Without virtue, riches and honor seem to me like a passing cloud. 4. A wise and good man was Hooi. A piece of bamboo was his dish, a cocoa-nut his cup, his dwelling a miserable shed. Men could not sustain the sight of his wretchedness; but Hooi did not change the serenity of his mind. A wise and good man was Hooi. 5. Chee-koong said, Were they discontented? The sage replies, They sought and obtained complete virtue;—how then could they be discontented? 6. Chee says, Yaou is the man who, in torn clothes or common apparel, sits with those dressed in furred robes without feeling shame. 7. To worship at a temple not your own is mere flattery. 8. Chee says, grieve not that men know not you; grieve that you are ignorant of men.

Maas, “Negotiating Efficiencies: Human Sacrifice, Karma and Asceticism in Jantu’s Tale of the Mahābhārata.” Vishwa Adluri, Hunter College, New York Interpretation of the narrative and using intertextual connections as evidence I disagree that “the occurrence of the word ‘jantu’ in the KU and in Shankara[’]s commentary” does not “help to understand the MBh passage under discussion.” On the contrary, it is highly relevant. The term jantu’s resonances in the Kaṭha Upaniṣad permit us to understand the philosophical dimension of the narrative. It suggests that an important philosophical argument is being worked out in the narrative rather than the kind of jostling for political authority between Brahmanism and śramaṇa traditions you see in the text. Even if you are not interested in philosophical questions, it is disingenuous to suggest that “Shankara interpreted the Upanishads from the perspective of Advaita Vedanta many hundred years after these works were composed. His approach is not historical but philosophical, which is fully justified, but his testimony does not help to determine what the works he comments upon meant at the time and in the contexts of their composition.” Is it really credible that Śaṁkara, interpreting the Mahābhārata some centuries after it was composed, did not correctly understand the Mahābhārata, while you, writing two millennia later, do? Can you seriously claim that Śaṁkara is not aware of the history of the text (although you are), while being ignorant of the intertextual connections between this narrative and the Kaṭha Upaniṣad? Isn’t the real reason that you claim a long period of development that it is only on this premise that you can claim that Śaṁkara’s interpretation is not relevant, and that yours, on the contrary, has greater objectivity? The notion that only the contemporary scholar, applying the historical-critical method, has access to the true or the most original meaning of the text is deeply rooted in 1 modernity.

Reviewed by Leonid Kulikov (Universiteit Gent) The present volume contains more than fifty letters written by two great scholars active in the first decades of western Indology, the German philologist and linguist August Wilhelm von Schlegel (1767–1789) and the British Indologist Henry Thomas Colebrooke (1765–1837). It can be considered, in a sense, as a sequel (or, rather, as an epistolary appendix) to the monograph dedicated to H. T. Colebrooke that was published by the editors one year before (Rocher & Rocher 2012). The value of this epistolary heritage left by the two great scholars for the his- tory of humanities is made clear by the editors, who explain in their Introduction (p. 1): The ways in which these two men, dissimilar in personal circumstances and pro- fessions, temperament and education, as well as in focus and goals, consulted with one another illuminate the conditions and challenges that presided over the founding of western Indology as a scholarly discipline and as a part of a program of education. The book opens with a short Preface that delineates the aim of this publica- tion and provides necessary information about the archival sources. An extensive Introduction (1–21) offers short biographies of the two scholars, focusing, in particular, on the rise of their interest in classical Indian studies. The authors show that, quite amazingly, in spite of their very different biographical and educational backgrounds (Colebrooke never attended school and universi- ty in Europe, learning Sanskrit from traditional Indian scholars, while Schlegel obtained classical university education), both of them shared an inexhaustible interest in classical India, which arose, for both of them, due to quite fortuitous circumstances.

    9 Writing systems Edited by Elena Bashir 9,1. Introduction By Elena Bashir The relations between spoken language and the visual symbols (graphemes) used to represent it are complex. Orthographies can be thought of as situated on a con- tinuum from “deep” — systems in which there is not a one-to-one correspondence between the sounds of the language and its graphemes — to “shallow” — systems in which the relationship between sounds and graphemes is regular and trans- parent (see Roberts & Joyce 2012 for a recent discussion). In orthographies for Indo-Aryan and Iranian languages based on the Arabic script and writing system, the retention of historical spellings for words of Arabic or Persian origin increases the orthographic depth of these systems. Decisions on how to write a language always carry historical, cultural, and political meaning. Debates about orthography usually focus on such issues rather than on linguistic analysis; this can be seen in Pakistan, for example, in discussions regarding orthography for Kalasha, Wakhi, or Balti, and in Afghanistan regarding Wakhi or Pashai. Questions of orthography are intertwined with language ideology, language planning activities, and goals like literacy or standardization. Woolard 1998, Brandt 2014, and Sebba 2007 are valuable treatments of such issues. In Section 9.2, Stefan Baums discusses the historical development and general characteristics of the (non Perso-Arabic) writing systems used for South Asian languages, and his Section 9.3 deals with recent research on alphasyllabic writing systems, script-related literacy and language-learning studies, representation of South Asian languages in Unicode, and recent debates about the Indus Valley inscriptions.

England has opened up the road into the Sanskrit literature’s studies, and particularly into Mahæbhærata’s. It is a young merchant, Charles Wilkins, who first gave a translation of the Bhagavadg∞tæ in 1785, opening thus the literature on the Mahæbhærata. A translation of the episode of Amƒtamanthana, from the Ædiparvan, followed. An other episode from the same, ›akuntalæ; followed in 1794 and 1795. In the annals of Oriental-literature, London, came out in 1820 and 1821 an anonymous translation of the beginning of the Ædiparvan, ending however with the Paulomæparvan, and not including the table of contents; this translation was also ascribed to Charles Wilkins, as in Gildemeister, bibl. Sanscr., p. 133: “interpres fuit Ch. Wilkins”; but H.H. Wilson in his Essays, ed. R. Reinhold Rost, T. I, p. 289, says more cautiously: “rendered into English, it is believed, by Sir Charles Wilkins”. In any case, from the introduction (dated Benares, 4th October 1784, the postscript 3rd December 1784) of the Governor General of India, the famous Warren Hastings, we know that Wilkins was working on a translation of the Mahæbhærata, “of which he has at this time translated more than a third”.

    Journal of the Research Society of Pakistan Volume No. 56, Issue No. 1 (January - June, 2019) Tanvir Anjum * Naila Pervaiz** Ghum Charkhaṛyā/Spin, O Spinning-wheel: Cotton-spinning and Weaving Symbolism in Shah Husayn’s Poetry Abstract Shah Husayn (1539-1593) of Lahore, popularly known as Lal Husayn, is a celebrated sixteenth-century sufi poet of premodern Punjab, who composed very lyrical and melodious short poems or kāfīs. His poetical compositions are high symbolic in nature, with similes and metaphors drawn from Punjabi rural life and folk traditions. In particular, most of his metaphors are related to cotton-spinning and cloth weaving, cotton being a major agricultural produce of Punjab. One of the reasons is that Shah Husayn belonged to a family or caste of weavers, which was, and is still, considered a marginalized community in South Asia. He was not shamed of his social status, as he did not hesitate to openly acknowledge it in his poetry. Most of his famous kāfis feature spinning and weaving metaphors, with charkha or the spinning-wheel as the central symbol. He employed a feminine voice in his poetry. He also talked about the technicalities of spinning and weaving, as well as attan or the female social space for spinning, and dowry, and beautifully weaves them in his sufi symbolism, which is meant to disseminate ethical ideals among the readers. He urges the people to earn good deeds during their lifetime so that they could enjoy the eternal pleasures in the life hereafter.     Early Scholars of Asia and Buddhism in Connection with oriental Studies in Italy By Oscar Botto The most significant contributions which mark the progress of Buddhist studies in Italy have been reviewed in a recent article I published in memory of 1 Giuseppe Tucci 1 , The purpose of the present article is to survey the accomplishments of Italian scholars before the: 19th century who worked in the emerging fields of Tibetan, Sino logic and Indian studies. Accurate knowledge of Tibet in the West dates back to an historical date: 1624, the year when the Portuguese Jesuit Antonio d' Andrade, the first European, arrived in the capital of West Tibet. In the following years his travel accounts, collected in the Novo descobrimento do Gram Cathayo, aroused great curiosity for those inaccessible lands. News reached the West about Tibet from other Christian priests as well, such as Father Cacella, Father Cabral, and Father Griiber whose journey took him from Peking to Lhasa and to Nepal. Curiosity about these Himalayan lands still persists today in the West, more alive than ever. Since the time of these early missionaries, Tibet has become the privileged destination of the Catholic missions in Asia. And to a missionary who was sent to those lands to continue Andrade's work, the Jesuit Ippolito Oesideri from Pistoia (1684- 1733), we owe the beginning of Tibetan studies in Italy. Desideri's ability to penetrate the most mysterious secrets of the Tibetans' faith, to undertake the most strenuous paths of thought and to interpret the 2 schemes of a complex theology was unequaled.

Less widely known is that Gobineau himself had a source: the Norwegian-born Indologist Christian Lassen (1800–76), since 1840 Professor for Ancient Indian Language and Literature at the University of Bonn, Germany. Christian Lassen’s philological researches formed the basis of not only Gobineau’s racial anthropology but also inspired other anti-Semites such as the German composer Richard Wagner and the French Orientalist Ernest Renan. Because of the Indologists’ role in establishing the later science of race, it is vital that we read nineteenth-century Orientalist philology carefully and critically. Since the end of the eighteenth century the search for the ‘cradle of mankind’ and the discovery of ancient Oriental texts caused a shift in scholarly attention to the East.3 This re-orientation reduced and marginalised the importance of Judaism and Jewish monothe- ism in the history and cultures of the West.
