Introduction The origins of bioinformatics, both as a term and as a discipline, are difficult to pinpoint. The expression was used as early as 1977 by Dutch theoretical biologist Paulien Hogeweg when she described her main field of research as bioinformatics, and established a bioinformatics group at the University of Utrecht (Hogeweg, 1978; Hogeweg & Hesper, 1978). Nevertheless, the term had little traction in the community for at least another decade. In Europe, the turning point seems to have been circa 1990, with the planning of the “Bioinformatics in the 90s” conference, which was held in Maastricht in 1991. At this time, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) had been newly established in the United States of America (USA) (Benson et al., 1990). Despite this, there was still a sense that the nation lacked a “long-term biology ‘informatics’ strategy”, particularly regarding postdoctoral interdisciplinary training in computer science and molecular biology (Smith, 1990). Interestingly, Smith spoke here of ‘biology informatics’, not bioinformatics; and the NCBI was a ‘center for biotechnology information’, not a bioinformatics centre. The discipline itself ultimately grew organically from the needs of researchers to access and analyse (primarily biomedical) data, which appeared to be accumulating at alarming rates simultaneously in different parts of the world. -

Raverat's River Interactive
The River Cam According to Gwen Raverat Introduction Gwen Raverat, the granddaughter of naturalist Charles Darwin, was born and brought up in Cambridge and pursued an artistic path, including study at The Slade School of Fine Art, London. Her practice was, to a great extent, a diary of her life as a woman in the early and mid 1900’s, depicting scenes from her home city, of her husband, painter Jacques Raverat, as well as imagery from a short period living in the south of France. Substantial collections of her work rest in two Cambridge institutions, Murray Edwards College (Raverat’s work is part of the New Hall Art Collection) and The Fitzwilliam Museum. Working in paint and relief printmaking (usually woodcuts or wood engravings), Gwen Raverat paid great attention to detail and drew on her surroundings for her subject matter. The river Cam appears regularly in her works, as part of the landscape or as the central character of the works, taking the viewer’s eye under bridges and along the buildings of Cambridge. This publication sets out and maps a selection of Raverat’s work, pinpointing the location where she captured her chosen subjects. In the course of the research, discoveries and connections that have been found are noted alongside each work, together with relevant other material such as geographical and access information. Created as part of a project capturing contemporary visual responses to Raverat’s rivers, the publication forms a component of a wider enquiry entitled To The River. To The River is a public art commission to celebrate the story of the river Cam in Cambridge. -

The initial research activity of Giulio was concerned with virology and biological cybernetics while, from 1975 onward, his work was completely devoted to protein crystallography. The crystallographic research was carried out in collaboration with Nobel laureate Max Perutz at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge (United Kingdom). A short biography of Giulio (Judd) Fermi appears inside John Finch’s book “A Nobel Fellow on Every Floor: A History of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology” published by the MRC in 2008. Introduction Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) [1-6], the famous Italian-American physicist who displayed the rare ability of performing both experimental and theoretical research at equal levels of originality and creativity, received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938 "for his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons" [7]. When the award ceremonies in Stockholm were over, after paying a short visit to Niels Bohr in Copenhagen, Enrico and his family fled to America on board of the RMS Franconia [3]. -

I will draw on the recent animal turn in literary criticism to provide original insight into the politics of Darwin’s animal tropes, and Woolf’s Darwinian animal tropes. My central research questions are how, to what extent, and with what effect, did Woolf engage with Darwin’s works, particularly his animal tropes? I will make two key claims in this thesis. First, I will argue that Woolf’s engagement with Darwin’s works – particularly the critically overlooked Descent of Man (1871) – was more sustained, extensive, and subversive than previously recognised.
