    FILM • FOLKLORE KOVEN rom Alien to When a Stranger Calls, many fi lms are based on folklore or employ an element of urban legend to propel the narrative. But once folklore aspects within such F fi lms have been identifi ed, do they warrant further scrutiny? In Film, Folklore, and Urban Legends, Mikel J. Koven explores the convergence of folklore with popular cinema FILM, studies, bringing attention to the signifi cance of these intertwined modes of storytelling. Going well beyond the identifi cation of traditional motifs in popular cinema, Koven reveals FILM, FOLKLORE, FILM, FOLKLORE, new paradigms of fi lm analysis that expand through the lens of folklore. In particular, this book focuses on the study of urban legends and how they inspired numerous fi lms. FOLKLORE, This book begins with a general survey of existing literature on folklore and fi lm, predominantly from the perspective of folklore studies. Subsequent chapters address discourses of belief, how urban legends provide the organizing principle of some fi lms, and how certain fi lms “act out” or perform a legend. Movies discussed include Alligator, Candyman, The Curve, URBAN Dead Man on Campus, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Weekend at AND Bernie’s, and The Wicker Man, as well as zombie fi lms, killer-bee movies, and slasher fi lms, including Black Christmas, The Burning, Halloween, and Terror Train. Koven also devotes attention to such key television shows as The X-Files and Most Haunted. LEGENDS AND In his analysis, Koven explains not only how fi lm and television narratives are built upon preexisting popular culture beliefs but also how those beliefs are recycled back into popular culture.

The author’s interest in this particular subject was awoken while studying in Fukuoka Japan, where these legends seemed to be a popular interest amongst the public, or at least they thought it to be a good idea to share these legends with a foreigner. In this essay a general introduction is given to the term contemporary legends is explained with the help of Dr. Jan Harold Brunand who is a known folklorist and has written a number of books on the subject. Then the vengeful Japanese ghosts are introduced into the essay, their appearance and behavior, followed by the four legends chosen, Toire no Hanako-san, Aka Manto, Teke-Teke or Kashima Reiko and Kuchisake- Onna. Samples of western stories are also mentioned as to show that there are similar stories from other places of the world. As well as written research an online survey was conducted and shared with native Japanese where they were asked if they knew and believed in the four legends cited in this essay. Stories and believes of co-students and others in Japan were also taken into consideration.

This thesis paper examines the art of storytelling in its modern form. Its purpose is to evaluate the continued use and worth of fairy tale literature within a modern, industrialized society. Through the use of fairy tale literature and interviews of local storytellers it attempts to redefine storytelling as an essential art form and educational medium. Storytelling not only perpetuates our cultural norms and values, but also our sense of humanity as well.

    The Terror Tale: Urban Legends and the Slasher Film Mikel J. Koven, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK Mark Kermode begins his documentary film about the slasher genre, Scream and Scream Again: A History of the Slasher Film (Andrew Abbott and Russell Leven, 2000), with a comparison between the slasher film and the urban legend known as "The Hook," in which a psychotic killer, with a hook for a hand, menaces a young couple, parked on Lovers' Lane. According to Kermode, "The Hook" works as a morality archetype for the entire slasher phenomenon: the young couple are threatened specifically because they have strayed from the moral path (by engaging in sexual activity), but are ultimately saved from certain death because their adolescent sexuality did not get the better of them (see Appendix One). Within this documentary film, and following Kermode's introduction, is a montage retelling of this legend by a variety of horror movie filmmakers including Wes Craven, William Lustig, Sean Cunningham, John McNaughton, and Tobe Hooper; each filmmaker relates a sentence or two of the story. Kermode concludes this sequence by noting that "The Hook" had a direct influence on slasher films like Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978), when fused with previous films about psychotic killers like Black Christmas (Bob Clark, 1974). But it is a single comment by Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974), which got me thinking directly about the connection between the slasher film and urban legends: Hooper notes that the enduring power of both these films and these legends is their "close call with death." In many urban legends, as well as films, about psycho killers, the protagonists survive; they met death (consciously or unawares as in the case of "The Hook") and lived to tell about it.

American folklorists were influenced by nineteenth-century European humanistic scholarship that identified in traditional stories, songs, and speech among lower class peasants an artistic quality and claim to cultural nationalism. The United States, however, appeared to lack a peasant class and shared racial and ethnic stock associated in European perceptions with the production of folklore. The United States was a relatively young nation, compared to the ancient legacies of European kingdoms, and geographically the country’s boundaries had moved since its inception to include an assortment of landscapes and peoples. Popularly, folklore in the United States is rhetorically used to refer to the veracity, and significance, of cultural knowledge in an uncertain, rapidly changing, individualistic society. It frequently refers to the expressions of this knowledge in story, song, speech, custom, and craft as meaningful for what it conveys and enacts about tradition in a future-oriented country. The essay provides the argument that folklore studies in the United States challenge Euro-centered humanistic legacies by emphasizing patterns associated with the American experience that are (1) democratic, (2) vernacular, and (3) incipient.
