Sodobne povedke: razmišljanje o »najbolj sodobnem« žanru pripovedne folklore Ambrož Kvartič Contemporary legends are an important part of the contemporary folk narrative repertoire and can provide us with vital information on processes in modern day society and culture. Th ey are frequently defi ned as an account of an unlikely event considered as factual. Th e content of these stories is oft en placed in the modern social and cultural reality. Th ey refl ect people’s attitude towards the current situation and the changes in their environment. Although traditional motifs can be recognised in contemporary legends, their context is in- fl uenced by the “modernity”. In the paper a couple of stories with their interpretations are presented, gathered in the Slovenian town of Velenje. Uvod Odkar so ameriški folkloristi v šestdesetih letih dvajsetega stoletja opozorili na tako imenovane sodobne (tudi urbane) povedke – zgodbe ki krožijo predvsem v mestnih oko- ljih in se širijo tudi s pomočjo medijev in drugih sodobnih komunikacijskih sredstev – se je v mednarodni folkloristiki sprožilo veliko zanimanje zanje. Poznavanje, tj. zbiranje, ana- liza in interpretacija sodobnih povedk, ima namreč izjemen pomen za naše razumevanje reakcij ljudi na spremembe, s katerimi so soočeni v svojem okolju. Folkloristi so v svojih analizah večkrat pokazali, kako se skozi te zgodbe (in druge žanre sodobne folklore) izra- žajo in sproščajo temeljni človekovi strahovi, frustracije, problemi, nemoč in podobno. Poglavitno vprašanje pri znanstveni obravnavi sodobnih povedk je, ali jih lahko obravnavmo in opredeljujemo kot poseben žanr žanrskega sistema pripovedne folklore in katere so tiste značilnosti, ki jih, če obstajajo, ločujejo od drugih žanrov. -

Two were crashed into the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center, causing them to collapse with catastrophic loss of life. A third was crashed into the Pentagon, costing an additional 189 lives, while passengers on a fourth evidently attacked the hijackers, causing the plane to crash in a rural area in western Pennsylvania with the loss of all 44 persons aboard. Much of the drama was played out live on national television, including the crash of the second plane into the South Tower at 9:03 AM and both towers' collapse, at 10:05 and 10:30 AM respectively. The tragedy sent shock waves through American culture not felt since the equally public tragedy of the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986. To be sure, the September 11 terrorist attacks were preceded by other anxiety-producing terrorist events: previous acts such as the 1985 Achille Lauro hijacking and the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland had inspired previous cycles of disaster humor. However, neither the first terrorist bombing at the World Trade Center in 1993 nor the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 had the international impact of the new attacks. -

The study of urban legends helps us be more alert to false information in our everyday lives. There are very limited resources about urban legends and the impact of the stories on deaf culture. There are very few stories that are common in the deaf community. There are plenty of books about urban legends, but none includes deaf people. -

REVIEW ESSAYS The Mexican Pet: More "New" Urban Legends and Some Old Favorites. By Jan Harold Brunvand. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1986. Pp. 221, Index, illustrations. $13.95 cloth. Reviewed by Thomas Walker. "The scholar may hesitate," wrote the hagiog- rapher Hippolyte Delehaye in his study of the saint's legend, "but the legend knows nothing of hesitation." The same may be said of what has come to be called the modern urban legend. In- deed, here we meet with the same dispatch, accelerated, however, by the modern mass media. The urban legend is rife in modern American life, and Brunvand has cultivated a flair for tracking it down, wherever its path, whatever its disguise. In his new book in the series that began with The Vanishing Hitchhiker (1981) and continued with The Choking Doberman (1984), he again picks up the scent of legend and uncovers, as the subtitle advertizes, "new" urban legends and some old favorites. The metaphor of the hunt or of the sleuth implied in the phrase "scent of legend rather than truth" (used in The Choking Doberman) is informative, especially as Brunvand treads ter- ritory familiar to the popular journalist, for we still lack a definition for the genre. One distinguishing feature, and one that Brunvand repeatedly emphasizes, thereby setting himself apart from the objectives of the journalist, is that the legend need not be true or verifiable, despite what is often claimed of it or believed; rather, it need only be "plausible" (Brunvand's judgement, accounting for a range of belief, or disbelief, in a legend's veracity), and the con- clusion to The Mexican Pet asserts such: "Rule 1: The truth never stands in the way of a good story" (p. -

FILM • FOLKLORE KOVEN rom Alien to When a Stranger Calls, many fi lms are based on folklore or employ an element of urban legend to propel the narrative. But once folklore aspects within such F fi lms have been identifi ed, do they warrant further scrutiny? In Film, Folklore, and Urban Legends, Mikel J. Koven explores the convergence of folklore with popular cinema FILM, studies, bringing attention to the signifi cance of these intertwined modes of storytelling. Going well beyond the identifi cation of traditional motifs in popular cinema, Koven reveals FILM, FOLKLORE, FILM, FOLKLORE, new paradigms of fi lm analysis that expand through the lens of folklore. In particular, this book focuses on the study of urban legends and how they inspired numerous fi lms. FOLKLORE, This book begins with a general survey of existing literature on folklore and fi lm, predominantly from the perspective of folklore studies. Subsequent chapters address discourses of belief, how urban legends provide the organizing principle of some fi lms, and how certain fi lms “act out” or perform a legend. Movies discussed include Alligator, Candyman, The Curve, URBAN Dead Man on Campus, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Weekend at AND Bernie’s, and The Wicker Man, as well as zombie fi lms, killer-bee movies, and slasher fi lms, including Black Christmas, The Burning, Halloween, and Terror Train. Koven also devotes attention to such key television shows as The X-Files and Most Haunted. The Terror Tale: Urban Legends and the Slasher Film Mikel J. Koven, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK Mark Kermode begins his documentary film about the slasher genre, Scream and Scream Again: A History of the Slasher Film (Andrew Abbott and Russell Leven, 2000), with a comparison between the slasher film and the urban legend known as "The Hook," in which a psychotic killer, with a hook for a hand, menaces a young couple, parked on Lovers' Lane. According to Kermode, "The Hook" works as a morality archetype for the entire slasher phenomenon: the young couple are threatened specifically because they have strayed from the moral path (by engaging in sexual activity), but are ultimately saved from certain death because their adolescent sexuality did not get the better of them (see Appendix One). Within this documentary film, and following Kermode's introduction, is a montage retelling of this legend by a variety of horror movie filmmakers including Wes Craven, William Lustig, Sean Cunningham, John McNaughton, and Tobe Hooper; each filmmaker relates a sentence or two of the story. Kermode concludes this sequence by noting that "The Hook" had a direct influence on slasher films like Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978), when fused with previous films about psychotic killers like Black Christmas (Bob Clark, 1974). But it is a single comment by Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974), which got me thinking directly about the connection between the slasher film and urban legends: Hooper notes that the enduring power of both these films and these legends is their "close call with death." In many urban legends, as well as films, about psycho killers, the protagonists survive; they met death (consciously or unawares as in the case of "The Hook") and lived to tell about it.
