Information on the burden of these infections is important for improved patient outcomes. The burden of serious fungal infections in Ghana is unknown. We aimed to estimate this burden. Using local, regional, or global data and estimates of population and at-risk groups, deterministic modelling was employed to estimate national incidence or prevalence. Our study revealed that about 4% of Ghanaians suffer from serious fungal infections yearly, with over 35,000 affected by life-threatening invasive fungal infections. -

Chalkbrood, caused by Ascosphaera apis, is a common and widespread disease that can result in severe reduction of emerging worker bees and thus overall colony productivity. Stonebrood is caused by Aspergillus spp. that are rarely observed, so the impact on colony health is not very well understood. A major concern with the presence of Aspergillus in honey bees is the production of airborne conidia, which can lead to allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, pulmonary aspergilloma, or even invasive aspergillosis in lung tissues upon inhalation by humans. In the current chapter we describe the honey bee disease symptoms of these fungal pathogens. -

Review Pathogenic fungi cause a wide range of syndromes in immune-competent and immune-compromised individuals, with life-threatening disease primarily seen in humans with HIV/AIDS and in patients receiving immunosuppressive therapies for cancer, autoimmunity, and end-organ failure. The discovery that specific primary immune deficiencies manifest with fungal infections and the development of animal models of mucosal and invasive mycoses have facilitated insight into fungus-specific recognition, signaling, effector pathways, and adaptive immune responses. Progress in deciphering the molecular and cellular basis of immunity against fungi is guiding preclinical studies into vaccine and immune reconstitution strategies for vulnerable patient groups. Furthermore, recent work has begun to address the role of endogenous fungal communities in human health and disease. Choosing the right treatment is not always simple because of the possibility of drug interactions and side effects. The first part of the article discusses the main treatments for superficial mycoses - keratophytoses, dermatophy- tosis, candidiasis, with a practical approach to the most commonly-used topical and systemic drugs , referring also to their dosage and duration of use. Promising new, antifungal therapeutic alternatives are also highlighted, as well as available options on the Brazilian and world markets. Other species like A. flavus, A. nidulans, A. glaucus, A. niger, and A. candidus ⚫ Family Moniliaceae ⚫ Characteristics: ⚫ Commonly occur in decaying vegetative matter, soil & feed grains ⚫ The fungi grow on sabaroud dextrose agar media with antibiotics at room temperature 37C. Colonies are green to bluish green at first and darken with age to appear almost black. Sabouraud dextrose agar ⚫ Aspergillus species are common in the environment. Spores often become airborne in dry windy weather spreading from one location to another. Spores can enter an individual and develop in the respiratory system, lungs, eyes, and ears. ⚫ A. Tinea Capitis Favus-Like Appearance: Problem of Diagnosis Dwi Ratna Adisty, Linda Astari Department of Dermatology and Venereology Faculty of Medicine Airlangga University Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya-Indonesia ABSTRACT Background: Tinea capitis (TC) is an infection of scalp, hair follicles, and the surrounding skin, caused by dermatophyte fungi. Favus, a chronic inflammatory tinea capitis typically seen in Trichophyton schoenleinii infection. Favus is characterized by ‘scutula’. Favus may result in cicatricial alopecia. Purpose: To understand the clinical manifestation and management of tinea capitis. Case: A girl, 8 year-old, 18 kg, with thick crust located at the center of the head since 3 months, became spreading overtime. There were itchy sensation, no fever, no pain. There was history of an itchy red patch on her neck which diminished with topical antifungal. Dermatological examination revealed multiple thick brown-yellow crust sharply marginated, there were erosion and alopecia area beneath the crust. There were no sign of inflammation, no pustule, no enlargement of cervical and occipital lymphnodes on palpation. Discussion: Wood’s light examination showed no fluorescence and potassium hydroxide (KOH) showed no spores. Result of fungal culture was no colony growth. Patient was given griseofulvin 20 mg/kg body weight/day, wet dressing, and ketoconazole 2% shampoo twice weekly. Good clinical result shown after 10 weeks. Conclusion: Diagnosis of TC established based on history taking, clinical findings, Wood’s light examination, KOH preparation, fungal culture. A negative culture may arise because antifungal treatment had been used prior to collection of the specimen. Griseofulvin still became the drug of choice for tinea capitis even there are new generations of antifungal.
