Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. The small local archaeological museum here is an absolute must! In Romans 16:23 Paul mentions his friend Erastus and • • we will see an inscription to him at the site. In the afternoon we will drive to GREECE CRETE TURKEY Nafplion for check-in at hotel followed by dinner and overnight. (B,D) MAY 28 - JUNE 22, 2021 June 1 Tue EPIDAURAUS - MYCENAE - NAFPLION Morning visit to Mycenae where we see the remains of the prehistoric citadel Parthenon, fortified with the Cyclopean Walls, the Lionesses’ Gate, the remains of the Athens Mycenaean Palace and the Tomb of King Agamemnon in which we will actually enter.

  • ARIT Newsletter American Research Institute in Turkey
ARIT Newsletter American Research Institute in Turkey Number 46, Fall 2008 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT President Late summer was a time for new beginnings. As of September 1, Dr. Bahadır G. Kenneth Sams Yıldırım left his post as Director of ARIT-Ankara to accept a position at his Immediate Past President Machteld J. Mellink PhD alma mater, New York University. Specifically, Baha will head the office Vice President for NYU’s excavations at Aphrodisias and also serve as Field Director for the Ahmet Karamustafa Secretary project. As many of us well know, Baha left Ankara having served a brilliant Linda Darling five-and-a-half year tenure as ARIT Director. With his inherent diplomatic Treasurer gifts, he deftly represented ARIT to the Turkish academic and governmental Maria deJ. Ellis Directors communities, and with equal force and charm to the American and other foreign Cornell Fleischer presences in Ankara and beyond. Among his many notable accomplishments Beatrice Manz Scott Redford was the securing of new quarters for ARIT at a time when the gift of the Mellink Brian Rose library made moving an absolute necessity. Working closely with the contractor, Jennifer Tobin Baha oversaw the transformation of the side-by-side flats in Çankaya into ideal Honorary Director Lee Striker library and hostel space for ARIT, the first “custom design” that the Institute has Institutional Members ever had in Turkey. I know that many join me in expressing profound thanks to Full Members Baha for all he has done in Ankara, and also for just being there. We wish the University of Chicago Dumbarton Oaks very best to him, his charming wife Ayşın, and their great little boy Yunus.

And so went this dissertation project: little by little quotidian efforts turned into something larger. But these drops, in fact, were not just my own efforts, nor were they always quotidian. The number of drops contributed by others is incalculable, but the impact is clear. Special thanks go to my advisor Fikret Yegül for his unwavering support and kindness throughout my graduate school experience. I also thank Diane Favro for her continual warmth and helpfulness. I am deeply thankful for my other committee members, Swati Chattopadhyay and Christine Thomas, for providing important outside perspectives and challenging me to go farther with my work. I am truly grateful for my community at UCSB: firstly, the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, for the support and space to grow as a scholar.

The dam reservoir of Yortanli constructed as a part of a contemporary irrigation project in Western Turkey conflicted with the antique settlement of Allianoi, which had devel- oped in the same area around a natural thermal spring in the 2nd century ad. The aim was to present the protection decisions and implementations related with the archaeological site of Allianoi in the Yortanlı Dam Reservoir so that monitoring and criticism of its consequences can be possible in the future. The tools of the three disciplines, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering and conservation, were emphasized. The following conclusions were derived: The understanding of the protection-development conflict of archaeological her- itage-dam relations in the case of Allianoi-Yortanlı necessitates the evaluation of its legal, administrative, technical, and managerial aspects with all related governmental and non– governmental parts. The presented evaluation provides an opportunity for the discussion of the validity of the protection intervention, which is reburial of the remains prior to water retention in the dam, within an international framework.

Anahtar sözcükler: Allianoi, Hadrianus, Roma Çağı, ‘S’ kıvrımlı sarmal başlık, bezeme, sütun başlığı Abstract: Situated right in the middle of the pond area of Yortanli Dam, near the 18th km. of the Bergama- İvrindi highway, in the province of Izmir’s Bergama district, Allianoi was constructed as a small center in the Hellenistic Period because of its geographical position and it’s hot water resources. In the 2nd century A.D. during Hadrian’s reign (A.D. 117-A.D. 138) it lived its golden age and then was economically weakened by the invasions and migrations of Late Antiquity and the place faded in the Eastern Roman Empire Period.
