Colloquium Anatolicum 2018 / 17 An Archaic Marble Block with an Artemis Relief Found in the Vicinity of Notion1 Özden ÜRKMEZ2 Keywords: Archaic Sculpture, Artemis, Notion/Claros, Doric Temple, Triglyph-Metope A marble architectural block was discovered in 2011 next to Ales River that passes through the perimeter of the ancient city of Notion localized in Ahmetbeyli Township in Izmir province. The block was a spe- cimen of triglyph-metope from a marble archaic temple built in Doric order. The present study proposes the thesis that, although the block was found at a close distance to Notion, it most probably belonged to a temple in Claros Sacred Site. This temple should be the Archaic Artemis Temple, of which only the foun- dations survive today. The figure that coul d be observed at the front of the block on the metope section as a low relief is the Goddess Artemis. The figure depicting an archer-hunter was dated back to 535-530 bc. If the theory proposed in the present study is accurate, the finding is significant as an evidence of the existence of the marble Artemis Temple built in Doric order during the Archaic Period and as the most visual ruin found remaining from the temple. BLOIS, LUKAS DE, The "Eis Basilea" [Greek] of Ps.-Aelius Aristides , Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies, 27:3 (1986:Autumn) p.279 The Ei~ BauLAea of Ps.-Aelius Aristides Lukas de Blois HE AUTHENTICITY of a speech preserved under the title El~ Ba T utAia in most MSS. of Aelius Aristides (Or. 35K.) has long been questioned.1 It will be argued here that the speech is a basilikos logos written by an unknown author of the mid-third century in accordance with precepts that can be found in the extant rhetorical manuals of the later Empire. Although I accept the view that the oration was written in imitation of Xenophon's Agesilaus and Isoc rates' Evagoras, and was clearly influenced by the speeches of Dio Chrysostom on kingship and Aristides' panegyric on Rome,2 I offer support for the view that the El~ BautAia is a panegyric addressed to a specific emperor, probably Philip the Arab, and contains a political message relevant to a specific historical situation. After a traditional opening (§ § 1-4), the author gives a compar atively full account of his addressee's recent accession to the throne (5-14). He praises the emperor, who attained power unexpectedly while campaigning on the eastern frontier, for doing so without strife and bloodshed, and for leading the army out of a critical situation back to his own territory. The author mentions in passing the em peror's education (1lf) and refers to an important post he filled just before his enthronement-a post that gave him power, prepared him for rule, and gave him an opportunity to correct wrongs (5, 13). -

9 Pilgrimage as Elite Habitus: Educated Pilgrims in Sacred Landscape During the Second Sophistic Marco Galli A Rita Zanotto Galli, con profonda amicizia e stima PATTERNS OF RELIGIOUS MEMORY AND PAIDEIA DURING THE SECOND SOPHISTIC Is it possible to reconstruct, at least in part, the suggestive and intricate frame that connected the monuments and images, the ritual actions, and the pilgrim who actively and subjectively participated as collector and observer of sacred experience? What indices permit us to trace the emotional reactions of pilgrims in contact with the sacred landscape? What mental processes and emotional reactions made the tangible objects (the monuments, the images, and the rites) into mental objects, and how did these become Wxed in the memory of the pilgrim? With these questions as guidelines, I shall argue that we can apply a contem- porary approach to the investigation of the social functions of ancient pilgrimage. For the exploration of the relationship between the religious experiences of the pilgrim and social instances of collective memory for the reconstruction and reactivation of a sacred traditional landscape, we may turn to a moment in history that provides an unusually dense 254 Marco Galli representation of the internal states of sacred experience.1 This is the period dubbed ‘The Second Sophistic’. It was a period virtually obsessed with the problem of memory, when even religious tradition, because it formed one of the most signiWcant communicative functions of collect- ive life, was subjected to fundamental revision within the process of social memory.2 Plutarch’s writings cast light on the role of memory and its interaction with religious tradition. -

A Sense of Humor: How Hippocratic Traditions Revolutionized Greek Medicine Presenter: Emily Siniscalco Faculty Sponsor: Robert Sullivan The Hippocratic Corpus is a collection of medical texts written by Hippocrates, an ancient Greek physician, and his students. These texts describe specific medical practices followed by Hippocratic physicians and contain many observations about diseases and their progression in the human body. Ancient Greek medicine did exist before the development of Hippocratic medicine; however, it was much less organized and sophisticated. Here, I aim to identify the ways in which Hippocratic medicine revolutionized medical traditions in ancient Greece. This research is based on analysis of multiple Hippocratic works, including Aphorisms, Epidemics, Affections, and The Hippocratic Oath. These works are all original documents developed during and after the life of Hippocrates in the fourth and fifth centuries BCE. Examination of such texts reveals the influence of Hippocratic tradition on many advancements in Greek medicine, particularly in the way physicians understood and treated diseases as well as the way medicine was practiced as a whole. In particular, Hippocratic tradition contributed to Greek medicine by removing disease from a supernatural context, increasing accurate prognoses based on detailed observations, and promoting personalized medical treatments. These were all significant developments in western medical tradition, as they increased the accuracy of prognoses and effectivity of treatments, ultimately resulting in a higher standard of patient care. This presentation will primarily focus on Hippocratic methods of observation-based prognosis and the effects of such methods on physician-prescribed treatments. Additionally, it will briefly address the ways in which Hippocratic medicine has influenced modern medicinal practices, and the ways in which modern medicine could still learn from the ancient Greek Hippocratic tradition. -

Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. The small local archaeological museum here is an absolute must! In Romans 16:23 Paul mentions his friend Erastus and • • we will see an inscription to him at the site. Waiting for Redemption in the House of Asterion: a Stylistic Analysis

The House of Asterion features the Minotaur, aka Asterion, who waits for “redemption” in his labyrinth. Many literary critics have suggested that the Borgesian labyrinth is a metaphor for human existence and the universe itself. Others have correctly interpreted Asterion’s ironic death at the hands of Theseus as his eagerly awaited redemption. Borges’ subversion of the reader’s expectations becomes the departure point for a systemic functional stylistic analysis of the story in one of its English translations, revealing how deeper-level meanings in the text are construed through its lexico- grammatical structure. A systemic functional stylistic reading suggests that on a higher level of reality, Asterion’s redemption is not only the freedom that death affords, but also a transformation that transcends his fictional universe. Asterion’s twofold redemption is brought about not only by the archetypal hero Theseus but also by the reader, who through the process of reading enables Asterion’s emancipation from the labyrinth. Today, these inscriptions con- stitute elements essential to our understanding and knowledge of ancient society. On the one hand, the everyday, ordinary aspect of these texts gives us a less idealized picture of the classical world; on the other hand, the materiality of the medium makes distant antiquity more real, more accessible. The discovery of new epigraphic evidence is always exciting, and gives scholars an opportunity to display their skill in deciphering. In antiquity, finding and re-using inscriptions, whether genuine or forged, played an important role in shaping and understanding the world: then as today, the reinterpretation of ancient inscribed texts allowed a reconstruction of the past, which was then employed as a way to manage the present. Poets, historians, and antiquarians quoted and discussed inscriptions, in both Greek and Latin, with a whole range of motives.1 This paper examines the circumstances in which inscriptions were discovered both in pagan and Christian antiquity and focuses on the ways they were used in the legitimation of new cults. 1 See the contributions of Higbie 1999; Tronson 2000; Boardman 2002 (index sv ‘inscriptions’); Haake 2004; Zizza 2006; Pownall 2008. -

While several other physicians had, previous to Marie, spoken about this disease, starting with the Dutch physician Johann Wier (ca. 1515-1588),1 numerous representations of the human figure with characteristics of acromegaly were fashioned by an- cient Greek and Hellenistic craftsmen.
