The present work seeks first and foremost to examine Talmudic narratives in their Iranian context, and secondly to examine the Talmudic background of Iranian narratives where applicable. The first and second chapters will offer an analysis of the alteration of historical and Biblical figures in the Bavli (the Babylonian Talmud) based on the influence of Iranian mythical and historical figures, while the third chapter will provide an account of how Iranists can learn from Talmudic Studies. Here we suggest that a Talmudic narrative may have encouraged Zoroastrian priests to compose an extensive work of religious literature, namely the Ardā-Virāz Nāmag, an idea which will be further explored in the appendix. The relationship between Iranian and Jewish materials in the Talmudic era is merely a piece of a larger puzzle, a piece that a number of scholars—such as Elman, Secunda, Mokhtarian, Herman, Kiel, Kalmin etc.—have recently begun to focus on. By focusing on Talmudic narratives that have not yet been sufficiently examined for Iranian themes and ideas, this dissertation represents a contribution towards piecing this puzzle together. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank my supervisor, Professor Richard Foltz, a dedicated Iranist who is not only a knowledgeable scholar of Iranian Studies, but someone whose love and devotion for Iran’s history and culture has been the strongest motivating force during the years of my work. His constant support and guidance have been exceptional; I admire him not only as a prominent scholar, but also as a role model. Professor Cohn’s immense and up-to-date knowledge of Talmud and Mishnah Studies paved the way for me to develop my own knowledge of Talmudic studies, and I thank him for his graciousness and devotion. Distinguished Professor Ira Robinson has been the most generous and patient professor a student could ever ask for, and I cannot thank him enough. Our walks through the narrow alleyways of ancient Babylon during our Talmud reading classes are memories I will always treasure. I would additionally like to thank distinguished Professor Mark Hale, who I have always sincerely appreciated for his expertise and knowledge of ancient Iranian languages. I am grateful that I had this chance to attend his incredible Pahlavi class. I still remember the first Pahlavi sentence he wrote on our class board around 20 years ago. And finally I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my family—my parents Mojgan Hajiyeh Ehsani and Bakhtiar Aboutaleb Ehsani, and my siblings Arezou, Armaghan and Anahita, are the most caring, loving and devoted family anyone could wish for. The analysis will consider these features as part of a coherent system, styled to serve the dialectic strategies pursued by the Zoroastrian high priests in response to the pressures their own community was facing in the early Islamic period. In order to provide a more comprehensive overview on DkIII language distinctiveness, the research will underline the outward/inward dynamics, addressing both the relation of this theological dialectic with the surrounding socio-cultural environment and the leading- role claims of a group within a politically subordinated community.     Critical Studies in Texts & Programs of Human Sciences, Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies (IHCS) Monthly Journal, Vol. 21, No. 1, Spring 2021, 23-40 Review of Translation of “Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr, A Middle Persian Text on Late Antique Geography, Epic and History” in Persian Shima Jaafari Dehaghi* Abstract Šahrestānīhā ī ērānšahr is a Middle Persian treatise about the historical geography of Sasanian cities in Iran. So far, this treatise has been translated and published in Persian by Hedayat, Oriyan, Taffazoli, and Daryaee. In 2002, Daryaee published this text with Persian and English translation, and in 2009, Jalilian translated Daryaee’s book into Persian. In the present study, we examined Jalilian’s translation of this treatise. It is noteworthy that Jalilian mentioned in his book that the translation of the Middle Persian text is from Daryaee himself. To make the review more accurate and to compare it with other translations, Daryaee and Taffazoli’s translations are cited and compared. First, the transliteration of each sentence is mentioned, and then the translation is written in chronological order. Then, the review of the translations is mentioned. It can be concluded that each of the translations of Middle Persian texts into Persian has new points that, in turn, will help us to better understand Middle Persian texts and ancient Iranian thought.     Response to ‘Next steps on Book Pahlavi’ (L2/20-135) Arash Zeini 8th May 2020 Introduction Pournader & Hai (2020) might be right in saying that ‘Book Pahlavi may be the best-known complex script not yet encoded in Unicode’. However, I am inclined to add that Book Pahlavi is certainly one of the least researched and understood scripts of late antiquity. Much work is needed before we can make reliable statements about the palaeography of Book Pahlavi. The issues that have puzzled the Unicode experts are in part genuinely difficult to answer. But in my view, the wrong questions have also been asked at times.1 In this document I will attempt to answer the questions raised by Pournader & Hai (2020) which is a very welcome addition to the proposals as it consolidates the questions that have remained unanswered. Please note that my rendering of Middle Persian words and Pahlavi characters is limited by the possibilities offered by the available fonts, which are not designed to accurately represent the scribal idiosyncrasies. If any representations raise more questions, please contact me for clarifications. Question 1 yh/1: The MP suffix -īh, transliterated <-yh>, is written / in Book Pahlavi. Contrary to Meyers (2014:12), the correct analysis of / is ! + + or $ + -. Some- times the scribes abbreviate or rather simplify this sequence of characters to . This happens most commonly at the end of the line, and not in everymanu- script. It is, for instance, very rare in manuscripts of the Pahlavi Yasna. Abstract This research examines the changes in conditions of music and dance after the 1979 revolution in Iran. My focus is the restrictions imposed on women instrumentalists, dancers and singers and the ways that have confronted them. I study the social, religious, and political factors that cause restrictive attitudes towards female performers. I pay particular attention to changes in some specific musical genres and the attitudes of the government officials towards them in pre and post-revolution Iran. I have tried to demonstrate the emotional and professional effects of post-revolution boundaries on female musicians and dancers. Chapter one of this thesis is a historical overview of the position of female performers in pre-modern and contemporary Iran.
