Dentro del armazón político-administrativo implantado en el archipiélago asiático, el eslabón municipal fue uno de los escasos es- pacios de poder tangibles para las élites indígenas. Seleccionadas por las autoridades coloniales en función de criterios políticos, económicos y religiosos, las clases dirigentes locales desempeñaron un papel ineludible en las resistencias y lealtades que despertó el gobierno de la metrópoli en las posesiones orientales. Estos aspectos constituyen las prin- cipales líneas de estudio de un análisis concebido en clave comparativa con los meca- nismos ensayados en la península en torno al acceso y control del poder local. Villaraza, Ph.D. Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2017 Trude Jacobsen, Director This dissertation centers on the importance of cultural production to the process of creating a coherent national identity and a unified political state in the Philippines. More specifically, I will examine role of theatre in relation to the general development of the nation and the state through Aurelio Tolentino’s plays Luhang Tagalog and Kahapon, Ngayon, at Bukas. The Philippines and Filipino people pose a unique case study in the formation of both a specific and coherent national identity and an independent political state space because of geography, varied cultural influences, linguistic diversity, and colonial past. Because of these factors, it is a wonder that a coherent Philippine state exists, much less the generally accepted notion of a Filipino national identity. I argue that cultural production, particularly theatre, actively championed the broader acceptance of a singular Filipino national identity and individual belonging to a collective state at one of the most critical moment in Philippine history; the exit of Spanish colonial rule, the entrance of American imperial rule, and active assertion of political independence of the Philippine Islands by and for the Filipino people. The knowledge formation and critical dialogue occurring through theatre nurtured the notion of a Filipino national identity and buoyed the possibility of a Philippine state across the diverse linguistic and geographic terrain of the archipelago in opposition to the emerging American empire.

    Citizenship and Civic Education: A Critical Elaboration on the Pedagogy of Rizal’s La Liga Filipina Clement C. Camposano Abstract Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s role in shaping Jose Rizal’s political ideas is a blurred spot in existing scholarship on the latter’s life and works. There seems to be an endemic lack of interest in this matter, with scholars preferring to explore Rizal through the optics of nationalism and/or liberalism, often in their attempt to construct the “unity” of his ideas. Aiming to fill this lacuna and unsettle established readings, this article explores Rizal’s decisive shift from Voltairean liberalism in favor of Rousseau’s vision of a cohesive civic body constituted through the social contract. It contends that the social contract theory and its associated concept of the “general will” could serve as bases for resolving the problem of fractiousness and excessive individualism Rizal observed among young expatriate Filipinos, a problem he became increasingly concerned with and nuanced his commitment to the campaign for liberal reforms. Putting on hold the obsession with a unified Rizal, this article asserts that invoking Rousseau’s vision crystallizes the meaning of La Liga Filipina—its place in the trajectory of Rizal’s thoughts and the educative role it was meant to play in relation to the Filipino nation as an ethical project. Post-colonial discourses on national identity and popular Christianity in the Philippines PETER J. BRÄUNLEIN In memory of Pattana Kitiarsa, a good friend. INTRODUCTION The social sciences are enmeshed with their own subject area in complex ways. Social-scientific discourses have an impact on the self-perception of tradition, authenticity and identity in the broader society. In the following sections, I shall trace various scholarly discourses on Filipino tradition, national identity, and popular Christianity. Such discourses result from varying expressions of Philip- pine nationalism. A general characteristic of nationalist discourses is their “pro- pensity to ‘invent tradition’ [...], rewriting histories, revivifying long dead cus- toms, and inventing new forms and traditions with apparently primordial ori- gins” (Hogan 2006: 118). Hence, religion functions either as obstacle to or source of national identity. From the post-Second World War years until today, the intellectual attitude towards Christianity varied considerably: outright refusal of the oppressor’s religion by left-wing nationalists, reappraisal of a revolution- ary “Passion Catholicism” by the “history from below” discourse, attempts of reconstructing pre-Christian animism, Austronesian cosmology and/or mystic- messianic nationalism as the true religion of “the” Filipino people, or post- nationalist appreciation of religious “creolisation” and “hybridity”. Such dis- courses are inseparable from the political development after independence and the postcolonial struggle over intellectual self-determination. Also inseparable 76 | PETER J. BRÄUNLEIN from discourses on the nation, tradition and the popular is the question “who speaks authoritatively, from what position, with what knowledge about the Fili- pino people”? This chapter examines various attempts of Filipino intellectuals to contribute to the collective identity of their nation.

Recientemente se han locali- zado en el AFIO dos nuevos dibujos de esta fecha. Se trata de los croquis de la ermita de la Virgen de Salambao (1765) y de la iglesia de Los Baños (1782). Las constituciones fran- ciscanas tenían especial cuidado con la arquitectura, lo que obligó a plantear soluciones concretas que afectarían más tarde a otras obras. Recently two new drawings of that time have been found in AFIO. They are plans of the Church of Virgen de Salambao (1765) and that of Los Baños (1782). The Franciscan constitutions had a special attention to architecture, there- fore specific solutions were proposed, affecting later works.
