In school, he ran and boxed, but was most interested in rugby football. Because of the Great Depression of the 1920’s, Lydiard dropped out of school at 16 to work in a shoe factoryc. Lydiard figured he was pretty fit until Jack Dolan, president of the Lynndale Athletic Club in Auckland and an old man compared to Lydiard, took him on a five-mile training jog. Lydiard was completely exhausted and was forced to rethink his concept of fitness. He wondered what he would feel like at 47, if at 27 he was exhausted by a five-mile run. Lydiard began training according to the methods of the time, but this only confused him further. At the club library he found a book by F.W. Webster called “The Science of Athletics.” But Lydiard soon decided that the schedules offered by Webster were being too easy on him, so he began experimenting to find out how fit he could get. -

As the date of the Opening Ceremony approaches, and athlete selection announcements begin to flow, we look forward to welcoming new Olympians into the New Zealand Olympian whanau. It’s clear that these Games will be conducted in challenging circumstances. Our athletes are preparing for a tough and very different Olympic Games experience. News that international spectators will not be able to attend the Games (while understandably necessary) is a blow, especially for competing athletes and their families. Because of these international travel restrictions, NZOC and its partners have sought new ways for New Zealanders to show their support. Some fantastic national and regional events are planned (we had a sneak preview at our last Olympians Commission meeting. Read more below about the Great Olympic Skate Roadshow which will be visiting 40 towns in 41 days, kicking off on Monday May 10th, with Olympians from all Games set to join for parts of the journey. -

Athletics NZ would like to acknowledge and thank Margaret Knox and the team at Athletics Otago for hosting this competition. A big thank you also to the officiating team and to Technical Delegate Ruth Liong. Almost 400 athletes from across the country will be competing at these championships and relishing the chance to go home with the title of 2021 New Zealand Cross Country Champion. We return to compete on the Chisholm Links Golf course to stage the 2021 Championships. It is the same course used for the Athletics NZ Cross Country Challenge last year when the Covid pandemic impacted the planned national cross country events. We acknowledge the goodwill and co-operation of the Chisholm Links Golf Club in staging these Championships. The management and golf community have gone out of their way to enable us to race over their fine terrain. These Championships, first held in 1903, have over the decades seen the nation’s best distance runner’s feature. -

New Zealand Athletes Who Have Set World Records and World Bests
New Zealand Athletes who have set World Records and World Bests Compiled by Steve Hollings The first New Zealand athlete ever to hold a World Record (World Best) was John Hempton who ran 9 4/5 seconds for the 100 yards on what is now Waitangi Day (6 February) 1892 at the New Zealand Championships at (the then) Lancaster Park in Christchurch. The difference between a World Record and a World Best performance is that the former is a performance that is ratified by the International Association of Athletics Federations, or its predecessor the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) where the performance was achieved using strictly enforced regulations at the time the performance was achieved. These regulations have changed over time and the list of events where World Records can be achieved has also changed over time. For example, the Marathon has only recently – 2004, become an event where a World Record can be established and set. Previous to this date performances in the Marathon were regarded as World Best performances. Between 1921 and 1935, Women’s performances were recognized by the Women’s World Federation (FSFI), but after that time the ratification of Women’s records fell under the auspices of the IAAF. A World Best performance is determined as being a performance that was achieved in an event that was/is not on the list of events recognized for World Records or was achieved prior to the establishment of the IAAF or was never ratified because of certain circumstances. Only six New Zealand men - Peter Snell (800m, 880 yards, 1000m, 1 mile – twice), Jack Lovelock (1500m, 1 mile), John Walker (1 mile, 2000m), Murray Halberg (2 miles, 3 miles), Dick Quax (5000m) and William (Bill) Baillie (20 kilometres, 1 hour) have held World Records that were ratified by the IAAF. -
