We learnt much from our initial attempt mid-last year and we hope we have made the necessary changes to this issue to make it a much sought-after edition. Last year we relied on a number of sources and resources for the information, which was gathered together quickly. Unfortunately, many items were in different formats; some had used unconventional abbreviations, whilst the method of recording some data was difficult to interpret. For this edition we have collected most of the data ourselves over the past few months – so we take responsibility for any errors. We’ve also taken note of the many very positive comments (and one very negative comment!) that has heartened and encouraged us to produce a better edition this year. Once again, before getting immersed in the content, we would advise you to spend a few minutes reading the Notes section which details some of the intricacies of the data. Stephen Hollings Simon Holroyd Editors February 2012 Acknowledgements We are indebted to the following colleagues and associates who provided content and their expertise to sections of this almanac: Murray McKinnon – who, as Convenor of the Records Committee, meticulously maintains the lists of National and All-Comers Records. Carl Jackson – who supplemented some of the All-time lists with his own data. Gavin Lovegrove of Imaging4, who undertook the typesetting, layout and coordinated and supervised the printing of the Almanac. Jamie Schaefer of Homegrown Creative who designed the cover. Page 4 | Athletics New Zealand Almanac 2011 Notes 2011 Calendar Year – The material in this Almanac covers the 2011 Calendar year which is from 1st January 2011 until 31st December 2011. The period therefore also covers parts of two New Zealand Domestic Seasons i.e., the end of the 2010 – 2011 Domestic Season and the beginning of the 2011 – 12 Domestic Season. The New Zealand Domestic Season runs from 1st May to 30th April of the year following. From the 1st January 2012 all future ranking lists will be for the calendar year only. Age Groups – In 2011 New Zealand had three age groups, Men/Women16, Men/Women19, Senior Men/Women. The age groups are based on a “cut-off” date of 31st December, BUT, athletes continue in their respective age group until the end of the Domestic Season, which is 30th April following. Therefore, in any one Calendar year if an athlete changes age group they may appear in two age group Ranking Lists. The age groups changed on 1st January 2012. Names – We have used the convention that the athletes name as exactly recorded in the official results or entry list of a meeting is the name of the athlete that we record in our statistics. Some athletes interchange abbreviated names and differently spelt first names across competitions and hence you will see the same athlete referred to either by their full given first name or by their “adopted” or abbreviated first name in different sections of this Almanac. We have endeavoured to be consistent but in many instances the athlete themselves prefer to be known by either name – depending on the circumstances (and their mood!). Name Change – Some athletes do change their family name due to specific circumstances e.g. marriage. Again we use the same convention as above – the family name they are using in the entry list or results of a competition. As far as we are aware the only athletes who have different family names in different parts of this Almanac are: Valerie Adams – Valerie Vili Tania Murray – Tania Murray-Dixon Demelza Murrihy – Demelza Murrihy-Topp Danielle Trevis – Danielle Ingram –Trevis Lesley Morton – Lesley Ryan Leonora Joy-Petrina – Leonora Petrina Affiliation - Again we have used the convention that the athlete’s affiliation as exactly recorded in the official results or entry list of a competition is the one we record in our statistics. An athlete may be representing their club, their Centre, or has been selected to represent New Zealand. Whichever representation is officially recorded at the time of the competition is the one that we use. Ranking Lists – Age group athletes’ performances (M/W16 and M/W19) will also appear
