CLUB KIWIFRUIT FUND RAISING PICK As reported in Ramblings newsletter, 6th June, 1992. The annual Shallcross kiwifruit pick was once again offered to Tauranga Ramblers to give our funds a much needed boost so that we can subsidise club days, Bar-B-Q’s, Pinto, buses, newsletters and travel to major events. All in all club members receive more than their subscriptions cover, therefore we need full support from all participants for our fund-raising efforts. The club is very appreciative of the chances to earn this money and a special thanks go to Bill and Marge Shallcross for this fruit picking opportunity. It certainly beats selling raffle tickets and gives us the chance to do something other than one’s usual job or studies. It is quite an education especially the way different people see the hairy berries – their shapes and sizes I’ll leave to your imagination. Colin Clifton commented that it was a change from working alone. Teresa Coston was certainly the noisiest and Kristin McLoughlin one of the quietest, but it was good to see everyone turn out. Some brought their spouses, or sons and daughters. Robyn Bint did a great job removing all the kiwifruit stalks. Marge did a great job of keeping the team fed, while Nigel Hines had done an absolutely fantastic job chasing along all members he could find. Over the two days we picked 162 bins compared to 166 last year. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite finish but Ramblers received $1400.00 for the two day’s work. Once again special thanks to Bill, Marge, Debbie, Russell, Rob Shallcross and his in-laws and to Nigel and Sheryl Hines for their organisation. -

I can only guide them. ” —John Kellogg Preface The goal of this project was to compile as many of John Kellogg’s posts on LetsRun.com as possible. I profoundly admire his training advice and his knowledge, and applying his principles to my own training brought me to new heights as a runner. Why John Kellogg, and not any of the other highly-regarded figures in the running world who have posted on LetsRun.com over the years (Renato Canova, Nobby Hashizume, Jack Daniels, et al.)? Perhaps because of his mysterious, guru-like reputation, or perhaps because of the sheer difficulty of assembling the range of posts. I also felt that it had to be done, that it would be a great loss for this knowledge to fade into obscurity over the years. John Kellogg seems to revel in the anonymity of the internet, and has posted under probably dozens of different “handles” over the years. In all likelihood, the writings here represent only a fraction of his total contribution to the online running community. Though his words sometimes fell on deaf ears, the power of the internet preserved much of his writing. -

This book is an autobiography. It was published in 1981 when Cunningham was 72 years old. The 1936 Berlin Olympics There was some confusion at the start as runners jostled one another for position. But I was used to this, and I lay back, moving to the outer edge of the pack, running easily and waiting for an opening. The crowd was noisy. I knew they wouldn’t be yelling like that for long. In less than four minutes they would be applauding the winners and forgetting the losers. But I was not going to lose. At 27, this could be my last chance to prove myself. The noise of the crowd throbbed in my ears, modulated by the pounding of my heart. I was pouring on the power when suddenly my legs began to hurt. Panic. Again the pain, the aching. Would it never go away?… At the halfway point in the race a swift Frenchman took the lead. I decided to overtake him. I was about to pass the man when my right leg suddenly buckled! I nearly fell. I recovered at once. But now new pains stabbed through my legs. Once more I started after the Frenchman. This time I passed him, and the crowd went wild. I had the lead!… We were in the stretch now. I lengthened my stride, fighting the pain. I pumped my arms harder. -

It’s clear that these Games will be conducted in challenging circumstances. Our athletes are preparing for a tough and very different Olympic Games experience. News that international spectators will not be able to attend the Games (while understandably necessary) is a blow, especially for competing athletes and their families. Because of these international travel restrictions, NZOC and its partners have sought new ways for New Zealanders to show their support. Some fantastic national and regional events are planned (we had a sneak preview at our last Olympians Commission meeting. Read more below about the Great Olympic Skate Roadshow which will be visiting 40 towns in 41 days, kicking off on Monday May 10th, with Olympians from all Games set to join for parts of the journey. -

A Short History of St Martins Athletic & Harrier Club Foreword The year 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the St Martins Athletic and Harrier Club. This brief history has been prepared to mark the occasion, for although St Martins no longer exists as such, it continues in the form of its successor, Port Hills Athletic, formed when St Martins merged with Cashmere Hillmorton in 2002. In preparing this history, it became evident that besides the names of those mentioned herein, the history of running and track and field in St Martins has been one of countless numbers of people taking up the sport and then enthusiastically giving of their time and energy. Many of those are still with the sport, even more have ‘moved on’ for various reasons, whether it be that their children grew up, they moved to somewhere else, they were no longer able to compete because of age or disability and so on. Be that as it may this history is therefore a salute to all those who have so generously given to the sport in so many ways over fifty years.
