NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE REGION When humans first plied the deep blue sea In a shallow cave on an island north of Australia, researchers have made a surprising discovery: the 42,000-year-old bones of tuna and sharks that were clearly brought there by human hands. The find, reported online in Science, provides the strongest evidence yet that people were deep-sea fishing so long ago. And those maritime skills may have allowed the inhabitants of this region to colonise lands far and wide. The earliest known boats, found in France and the Neth- erlands, are only 10,000 years old, but archaeologists know they don’t tell the whole story. Wood and other common boat-building materials don’t preserve well in the archaeological record. And the colonisation of Aus- tralia and the nearby islands of Southeast Asia, which began at least 45,000 years ago, required sea crossings of at least 30 kilometres. Yet whether these early migrants put out to sea deliberately in boats or simply drifted with the tides in rafts meant for near-shore exploration has been a matter of fierce debate.1 Indeed, direct evidence for early seafaring skills has been lacking. Although modern humans were exploit- ing near-shore resources2 such as mussels and abalone, by 165,000 years ago, only a few controversial sites suggest that our early ancestors fished deep waters by 45,000 years Archaeologists have found evidence of deep-sea fishing ago. The main organisers were Sue O’Connor, David Bulbeck and Juliet Meyer from ANU, who are also the editors of this volume, and Budianto Hakim from Balar Makassar. Funding for the symposium was provided by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (DP110101357) to Sue O’Connor, Jack Fenner, Janelle Stevenson (ANU) and Ben Marwick (University of Washington) for the project ‘The archaeology of Sulawesi: A strategic island for understanding modern human colonization and interactions across our region’. AUTHOR’S COPY | AUTORENEXEMPLAR Kitsch, irony, and consumerism: A semiotic analysis of Diesel advertising 2000–2008 CHRIS ARNING Abstract Diesel advertising poses a conundrum for semiotics practitioners. Diesel ads are thought-provoking and seem to interrogate prevailing social mores as well as impugning fashion and consumerism. Each season’s Successful Living campaign is semiotically rich with a high connotative index. Teasing out these polysemic meanings is not a straightforward task, however. This article examines in detail six Diesel campaigns from 2000 to 2008. The ar- ticle focuses on the rhetorical devices and representational tropes that form the grounds for a Diesel approach to advertising. These include both a kitsch aesthetic and a camp sensibility. The author argues that the same brand constructs twin codes — one that positions Diesel as a scurrilous and insightful countercultural observer with key objections to our consumer- ist culture, and the other a nihilistic and ludic mischief maker that invites smart decoders into a realm of irony and textual bliss. The analysis applies a toolkit approach to semiotics that amalgamates theoretical grounding with pragmatism. Keywords: advertising; double-coding; irony; kitsch; consumerism. Commission C4 annual report 2017 Report for the period January to December 2017 The Commission's main achievements during 2017 are as follows. 1 The publication of the second ICOMOS-IAU Thematic Study on astronomical heritage ("TS2"). Heritage Sites of Astronomy and Archaeoastronomy in the Context of the World Heritage Convention: Thematic Study no. 2 was published as an e-book in June, in time for the 2017 UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Kraków, and as a paperback in November, in time for the ICOMOS General Assembly in Delhi. ICOMOS Thematic Studies (sometimes produced in co-operation with specialist partner organisations) aim to provide a synthesis of current research and knowledge on a specific theme and/or region, and are useful to State Parties wishing to nominate a heritage property for inscription on the World Heritage List. TS2 examines a number of key questions relating to astronomical heritage sites and their potential recognition as World Heritage, attempting to identify what might constitute “outstanding universal value” (OUV) in relation to astronomy. It represents the culmination of several years' work to address some of the most challenging issues raised in the first ICOMOS-IAU Thematic Study ("TS1"), published in 2010. A particularly complex issue is the recognition and protection of dark skies. Dark sky areas cannot in themselves be considered as potential World Heritage Sites, but TS2 includes a thematic chapter by Michel Cotte of ICOMOS considering a range of ways in which dark sky values can be interrelated with broader cultural or natural values of a place and thereby contribute to its overall cultural or natural value and potential OUV. -

After explosive cyclogenesis south of Greenland takes place while crossing a very intense upper-level jet stream, Kyrill underwent secondary cyclogenesis over the North Atlantic Ocean just west of the British Isles. The secondary cyclogenesis (Kyrill II), was located on the occlusion front of the mature cyclone (Kyrill I), which is very unusual compared to typical frontal cyclogenesis generally occurring along the trailing cold fronts of existing cyclones. The mechanisms of secondary cyclogenesis are investigated based on moderate-resolution (0.0625◦ grid spacing) RCM simulations. The formation of Kyrill II along the occlusion front follows common mechanism for secondary cyclogenesis like breaking up of a local, low tropospheric PV strip along the front and diabatic heating with associated development of a vertical extended PV tower. Kyrill II propagated further towards Europe, and its development was favoured by a split jet structure aloft the surface cyclone, which maintained the deep core pressure (around 961 - 965 hPa) for at least 36 hours.
