As both kings and gods, Hawaiian and Andean royalty alike donned garments entirely covered with brilliant feathers to proclaim their significance, while their counterparts in other cultures wore crowns of gold and gems. High status and desirability have always been signaled by the transformative effects of reflected light. Recent research indicates that our brains may be hard-wired to associate glossy surfaces with water (tinyurl.com/glossy-as-water). If so, the impulse drawing us toward them may have evolved as a survival mechanism. There may also be subconscious associations with other survival necessities. Gold has been linked to fire or the sun, the source of heat, light, and plant growth. The glitter of beads or sequins may evoke nighttime stars needed for finding one’s way. The flash of jewels may recall an instinctive association with eyes. Die drie letters waren de eerste spontane reactie toen we zelf voor het eerst de vernieuwde Schouwburg binnenstapten. Hopelijk overvalt net zo’n wow-gevoel ook jou wanneer je na twee seizoenen straks onze theaterzaal weer betreedt. In betere omstandigheden dan ooit tevoren zal je kunnen genieten van topvoorstellingen, die eindelijk weer in de Kempen te zien zijn dankzij een vergroot podium en de allermodernste technische infrastructuur. Het verrassingseffect zal na een tijdje wellicht wegdeemsteren, maar de betovering van de Warande zal blijven. Daar zorgen onze programmatoren en alle enthousiaste medewerkers wel voor. Immers, hoe groot ook, we waken even hartstochtelijk over de warmte van het nest. Tijdens de verbouwingswerken waaierde de Warande uit naar alle hoeken van de Kempen met een uniek aanbod aan grote en kleine producties en werd zo nog meer een stukje van iedere Kempenaar. De opdracht van een regionaal cultuurhuis is nog nooit zo letterlijk ingevuld. We zullen dat ook blijven doen met een sterk aanbod in eigen huis en verrassende locatievoorstellingen en grote en kleine samenwerkingsverbanden her en der, onder andere met de collega’s van ’t Pact (de cultuurcentra van Geel, Mol, Herentals en Heist-op-den-Berg).     Themalijst Belpop vinylsingels 4 Vooraf De bib van Kortrijk startte in 1968 met een vinylcollectie. Toen de cd de elpee verdrong bleven de elpees nog een tijdje in Open Kast staan tot ze naar het magazijn verdwenen en nog maar sporadisch uitgeleend werden. Ondertussen deden de meeste ‘discotheken’ hun vinylcollectie weg, ofwel via verkoop, ofwel naar een conservatorium in de buurt, ofwel naar het containerpark. Alleen de plaatselijke producten werden gewoonlijk wel bewaard. In 2003 digitaliseerde Radio2 Kortrijk hun gehele audiotheek en kregen we de kans om hun bestaande vinylcollectie over te nemen. Zo kregen we er in één klap ca. 15.000 vinylelpees bij en ca.20.000 vinylsingles Nu hebben we een collectie van ongeveer 27.000 elpees en 27.000 singles. Onze dubbels hebben we zorgvuldig met elkaar vergeleken en de slechtste exemplaren werden verkocht. Wat doen we nu met ons vinyl? We besloten een gedeelte van onze collectie terug voor het publiek open te stellen in de vorm van digitale kopies. Er zijn een aantal wettelijke restricties die we moeten in acht nemen Het proces mag niet beschouwd worden als het digitaliseren om gemakkelijker te kunnen uitlenen. Wettelijk beschouwen we het cd-schijfje niet als een muziek kopie maar als Erfgoedkopie Om de wetten op het auteursrecht en de rechten van de platenmaatschappijen te beschermen mogen we alleen maar vinyl digitaliseren onder de volgende Voorwaarden 1. De lp mag nooit op cd verschenen zijn. 2. De gekopieerde lp blijft eigendom van de bibliotheek. 3. De gekopieerde cd wordt uitgeleend onder de normale voorwaarden, wordt niet verkocht en blijft dus bezit van de bib.

Their hats tend to be particularly eccentric. ‘Funny, isn’t it,’ Mr Bolder observed to his friend Fred Willis, the hatter, ‘that people who paint pictures think it’s proper that they should act barmy? Hats like horses wear in summer.’1 A floppy felt or straw, when Victorian manhood was ramrod-stiff in top hats or bowlers, was unconventional, but hardly threatening. The upper-middle- class Forsytes, however, in John Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga, worry about June Forsyte’s fiancé, architect Philip Bosinney. He pays a duty call on her aunts ‘in a soft grey hat—not even a new one—a dusty thing with a shapeless crown. “So extraordinary, my dear, so odd!” Aunt Hester had tried to shoo it off a chair, takinG it for a stranGe disreputable cat.’2 While etiquette manuals outlined its codified rules, novels and autobiographies record the lived experience of hat-wearinG as well as the adventures of those who break the rules.
