O 2010.3.1 Little Hook Locomotive Bell Bell, Locomotive At 7:00 am on the morning of Thursday, July 15, 1926, Louisville & Nashville Railroad passenger No. 4, known as the ‘Little Hook’ pulled out of the Union Station in Atlanta, GA on a run from Atlanta to Knoxville, TN. The train was due in Canton, GA at 9:10 am, but arrived a few minutes late. At about 9:30 or 10:00 am, as the ‘Little Hook; was traveling north about four miles north of Canton, and just south of Keithsburg, the train derailed on a curve near the north bank of the Etowah River. The exact cause of the derailment was unknown, although two possible causes were given. One theory was that a broken wheel caused the train to wreck, while the other theory was that the train was traveling at an excessive speed and was unable to make the curve. The engineer, Roy E. ‘Buck’ DeArmond, and the fireman, Hubert D. Wiley, were both killed in the wreck. In late September 2008, over 82 years after the wreck of the Little Hook, Lowell Manous of Canton rediscovered the train’s bell in the waters of the Etowah River near the site of the wreck. The discovery was made possible due to the fact that the bell became exposed above the water level Page 4 Catalog / Objectid / Objname Description Condition Status Home Location

of the river, after a prolonged drought. The number 394 was found chiseled into the of the bell; the same number that appears on the side of the coal tender in photographs of the wreck.

O 2012.55.6 Letter dated Mar 19, 1924 to Bud and Fernando Letter Wednesday 3-19-24

Dear Bud and Fernando:-

I truly hope you are having no trouble in your task of liquidating to E.H. Pierce estate. There is one feature of it that was not mentioned when we were all together that prompls me to write this to you. Namely, Emmett’s children. They did not ever cross my mind at the time, but I know and you know that

they have a voice in it. After every thing has been sold and turned into cash and all debts paid including your own time. I am sure that the legal, and right thing to do before turning the cash overto Mother would be to pay Clyde and Russell or their guardian an eighth of the cash, which would be their rightful share, I feel quite sure I am right in this or I would not suggest it to you. What do you think about it? I know you both want to do the right thing, and Emmett’s boys are living facts in this case. And I feel that if there is only eight dollars left after the slate is cleaned that those boys should get one of those dollars. Do you? Wishing you both the very best success. I remain your Sis, Bets. O 2012.55.7 Letter dated Sept 13, 1897 to Alfred Pierce Letter Dublin GA, Sept 13, 1897

Mr. Alfred Pierce Stephensville GA

Dear Cousin, I learned that you wanted to buye my plac; and I thought I would write to you; and name price and description; I have 150 acres in all: 50 acres that joins Mr. Raffield and don’t join the 100 where I live. I had rather sell it separate if I can sute buyers: as Mr. Raffield wants the 50 acres that joins him. That is all in the woods; on the 100 where I live I have 51 acres in cultivation; divided up in five fields of 20, 14, 10, 5, and 2 acres. About 7 or 8 acres in branches. The land is as level as you would want I recon. My dwelling has 4 rooms 15x15 one of the four is

used for dining and evok room; on 10x12 shed room on 6x6 pantry 6 feet hall piaza 8x32 on frount; one stack chimney; 2 fine places/ One smoke house, one cotton house with 2 shelters two cribs with one shelter 4 plank stalls on 60 gallon syrup kittle with briek furniel. The cane mill I would exxept. A small apple orchard of early and late apples. Peach orchard is not verry much: one large seuppernong grape vine which allways bears fine crops. For the 100 acres described I ask thirteen hundred Dollars cash; it is 6 ¼ miles from Dublin. My Dwelling cost me about one third of the price I ask. I have bargained some of my timber to Cousin Wash. Smith for eruss tyes; at 2 ½ ets per tye. Mr. Evans that lives above me had his erus tyed at the same price; and it paid hima little over four Dollars per acre and he said he had a plenty of timber in trade. So that would reduce the price about two hundred. Well if you think you would want the place at that price come soon or write; as three other partys have spoke to me about buying the place. I will haveto pay cash for the place I am on a trade of: and will have to sell for

O 2012.55.8 Letter dated Feb 10, 1927 Letter Feb 10 1927

Thurs P.M.

You wont have enough left to brag about, and you be sure to get a suit with this too, I better not come down there and catch you with-out one some-time when you have plenty of time you can make me a chair, some-thing like the one you made Adelaide, if you want to. Hope all of you are well and happy. Ive got to hurry and go to work. With love and best of luck, from Ford Agues is doing fine.

They still mine for marble, but use it 11 strictly in the consumer products industry. The marble, also known as calcium carbonate is mined and ground into different grades in powder form to be developed in cultured marble and dry grinding of extenders and filler products to the engineering and pigment industries. With the development and refinement of micro-fine particle sizes, Calcium Carbonate can be found in paints, vinyl, liquid cleansers, plastics, stucco, latex, baking flour, animal feed and hundreds of other products. Major companies, like Sherwin Williams Paint, Owens Corning and Dow Chemicals, use Imerys product as a filler for common building materials such as paints, caulking, carpet backing, sheet rock, PVC, and other tipes of plastic, as well as agricultural and lawn limes. Marble chips are sold to local building supply centers for landscaping ground cover.

1. The smallest sample is a good product because it is pure white and has few crystals. 2. The sample with the large crystals is a poor product because of the crystals. 3. The pink sample with the pyrite was rejected for pulverizing because of the color and impurities. 4. The powder is the finished calcium carbonate. "The Mercury dime is a ten-cent coin struck by the United States Mint from 1916 to 1945. Designed by Adolph Weinman and also referred to as the Winged Liberty Head dime, it gained its common name as the obverse depiction of a young Liberty, identifiable by her winged , was confused with the Roman god Mercury. Weinman is believed to have used Elsie Stevens, the wife of lawyer and poet Wallace Stevens, as a model. O 2010.42.2 Robert Tyre Jones, Sr. Painting R.T. Jones with the Canton Cotton Mill #1 in the background through a window, circa 1930s. Multimedia links include first unseen report suggesting value, etc. that came with the painting from the library. The second is a formal appraisal done January 2011 by Vernon Abrams. He estimates value at $35,000, good condition but painting would benefit from cleaning.

The painting originally hung in the RT Jones Memorial Hospital, then they gave it to the RT Jones Library. The library donated it to CCHS in 2010. It is currently on loan (since CCHS had no place to store it) at the home of Skip and Helen Spears in Ball Ground. O 2010.53.1 Church Pew from the 1854 Little River United Methodist Church Pew The first Little River log church building was located near Little River at Evans Bridge. In 1839 a gift of twelve acres of land on Old Alabama Road was given to the Trustees of Little River church and the first building on this site was also of log construction. This building was used as both church and school for the next fifteen years. Soon a camp ground sprang up on the grounds and a large arbor was surrounded by small cabins and Camp Meetings were held until 1912. In the meantime a second church building was built on the grounds in 1854, constructed of hand dressed north Georgia pine. This building was built to last since it is still in use. It was from this building that the old church pew came. When new pews were purchased in 1965, the Long family requested a pew as a memorial to the fact that Longs had been members of the Little River Methodist Church almost from its beginning.
