    FRANK VAGANÉE Alto- and soprano saxophonist, arranger, composer, artistic director BJO, teacher °1966 www.frankvaganee.com www.brusselsjazzorchestra.com www.jazznbeyond.be www.luca-arts.be Frank Vaganée was born on March 19, 1966 in Mechelen, Belgium. He received a classical musical education at the Conservatory of Mechelen and the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (1974-1985). Frank got improvisation lessons from the American jazz saxophonist John Ruocco at the Antwerp Jazz Studio (1983-1986) and studied composition and arranging techniques at the Hochshule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne (1993-1995) with another American, Bob Brookmeyer. In 1998 he moved to New York to study. Frank has led his own bands and composed for both large and small orchestral forces since 1983. He was a freelancer at the BRT (Belgian Radio and Television) Jazz Orchestra and BRT Big Band from 1986-1991. He was a member of the ‘Timeless Orchestra’ from the Netherlands, with which he toured throughout Europe and Japan (1989-1993) and represented Belgium in 1989 in the EBU-big band (European Broadcasting Union) in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy. In 1991 Frank was named best jazz talent by the Belgian Jazz Press. In 1993 he won the CERA Bank’s “Youth and Music” Award. In 1994 he and the BJO won the “Prix Nicolas Dor”. In 2001 Frank won the “Django d’Or” award. In 2006 Frank and the BJO won the “Flemish Culture Award”. In 2011 he won the “Jazzmozaïk [magazine] Award”. Between 2011 and 2013, Frank was artist-in-residence in his hometown Mechelen, Belgium. In this capacity, he realized numerous projects in Mechelen, including: the jazz oratorio “Say, sing it, the city are we” in collaboration with poet Roger De Neef, in the context of the Newtopia festival, “The end of the world”, a play in collaboration with theater ‘t Arsenaal, “Serendipity”, a musical score in addition to the exhibition of artist painter Beniti Cornelis.

Dat zou je misschien denken als je oog valt op het rijtje lachspierstimulatoren en grollen- producenten die dit seizoen de durvers op de eerste rij al eens in hun hemdje willen zetten. Niet dat je daar meteen de Schedelgeboorten of Kommil Foo van moet verdenken. Of stel je voor dat de Frivole Framboos je een strijkstok in de hand duwt. Neen, dan zit je veiliger in het theater, Echt Antwaarps, Fakkel of bij andere Paljassen. Terugblikken doen we ook weer want On n’oublie rien, en zeker John Lennon niet. En mogen we het wel hebben over een terugblik of is het eerder vooruitkijken als we de namen van Willem Vermandere of Liesbeth List in ons lijstje tegenkomen? Toch artiesten om nog eens naar uit te kijken. Muzikale duizendpoten draaien dit seizoen hun hand niet om voor Levenslappen en Smartliederen en hun Roots.

Geen spots gericht op het podium, geen muziekklanken, veel te kil. Iedereen snakte naar artiesten vol passie en vuur. Achter de schermen van het cultuurhuis bleef men volop aan de slag om het programma aan te passen, mogelijkheden te verkennen. Het was voor iedereen maanden lang wennen aan het gemis aan publiek met een traan en een lach. Maar kijk… Inderdaad… Verrast… Opgelucht! Het enthousiaste team speelde het alweer klaar. Een bomvolle programmabrochure voor het najaar. In vele huiskamers een diepe maar opgeluchte zucht. Want Jan Leyers, Jo Vally en Wannes Cappelle in De Leest.     Sal La Rocca – bass Initially briefly interested in rock guitar playing, Salvatore La Rocca discovered jazz at age 23, in the early 80's, switched to double bass and taught himself the jazz idiom, taking Paul Chambers as a model. At first, La Rocca was regularly seen accompanying Jacques PELZER. Establishing himself as a bass player, a position rather empty in those years in the Liège area, he played with the local musicians: Robert Jeanne, Robert Grahame, Steve Houben, Pierre Vaiana... In the mid-80s, PELZER introduced him to John Eardley, then Michel Graillier, Leo Mitchell and Steve Grossman who hired him in 1987 for a tour in the surrounding countries. In 1988, he was hired by Steve Houben to play a 6-week engagement at the Singapore jazz club, and toured Germany with guitarist John Thomas' quartet. In 1990, he played at the Gouvy Jazz Festival with Sal Nistico, Jacques Pelzer, and Mal Waldron. In 1991, Sal was a member of vocalist Raffaela Renzulli's Ensemble, featuring Charlie Mariano. In 1993, he was with Steve Houben's quartet at the Lafayette International Festival. It was with this quartet that he recorded a first CD. In 1994, tours with Pierre Vaiana, in quartet with Salvatore Bonafede, and Dré Pallemaerts as well as with Mike Del Ferro's trio with Hans Van Oosterhout and Harold Land as a guest. He also performed the Liège festival with a quartet featuring saxophonist Dave Turner. The show was recorded by Belgian television. In the mid-90s, Master drummer Bruno Castellucci, taking La Rocca under his wing, began hiring him for several projects, and introducing him to many.

Die drie letters waren de eerste spontane reactie toen we zelf voor het eerst de vernieuwde Schouwburg binnenstapten. Hopelijk overvalt net zo’n wow-gevoel ook jou wanneer je na twee seizoenen straks onze theaterzaal weer betreedt. In betere omstandigheden dan ooit tevoren zal je kunnen genieten van topvoorstellingen, die eindelijk weer in de Kempen te zien zijn dankzij een vergroot podium en de allermodernste technische infrastructuur. Het verrassingseffect zal na een tijdje wellicht wegdeemsteren, maar de betovering van de Warande zal blijven. Daar zorgen onze programmatoren en alle enthousiaste medewerkers wel voor. Immers, hoe groot ook, we waken even hartstochtelijk over de warmte van het nest. Tijdens de verbouwingswerken waaierde de Warande uit naar alle hoeken van de Kempen met een uniek aanbod aan grote en kleine producties en werd zo nog meer een stukje van iedere Kempenaar. De opdracht van een regionaal cultuurhuis is nog nooit zo letterlijk ingevuld. We zullen dat ook blijven doen met een sterk aanbod in eigen huis en verrassende locatievoorstellingen en grote en kleine samenwerkingsverbanden her en der, onder andere met de collega’s van ’t Pact (de cultuurcentra van Geel, Mol, Herentals en Heist-op-den-Berg). Introduction The European Business Awards for the Environment are awarded by the European Commission, Directorate General for Environment, every two years and aim to recognise and reward European companies which set an example by successfully bringing together innovation, economic viability and environmental concerns. The scheme comprises four award categories in which companies are rewarded for management practices, products, processes or international co-operation activities which contribute to economic and social development without detriment to the environment. To be eligible for competition in the European Business Awards for the Environment, companies first have to succeed in the national award schemes which are organised throughout Europe every year. This means that the companies awarded the European prize are ‘the best of the best’; the most far-sighted, responsible and innovative across Europe. Participation is open to companies from all EU member states and the candidate countries Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. The submission of entries to the European level awards competition is managed by national coordinating bodies. A list of all national coordinators is provided in section 7 of the press dossier (page 15-18). 2. 2006 Nominees The companies listed below were selected by the jury as nominees for the 2006 European Business Awards for the Environment. The winners of the 2006 European Business Awards for the Environment will be announced at the Award Ceremony for Green Week on 1 June 2006 in Brussels.
