THE KRISHNA TEMPLE COMPLEX, HAMPI: AN EXPLORATION OF ITS IDENTITY AS A MEDIEVAL TEMPLE IN THE CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Ashima Krishna January, 2009 © 2009 Ashima Krishna ABSTRACT Hindu temples in India have been in abundance for centuries. However, many have lost their use over time. They lie vacant and unused on vast tracts of land across the Indian subcontinent, in a time when financial resources for the provision of amenities to serve the local community are hard to come by. In the case of Hampi, this strain is felt not only by the community inhabiting the area, but the tourism sector as well. Hampi’s immense significance as a unique Medieval-city in the Indian subcontinent has increased tourist influx into the region, and added pressure on authorities to provide for amenities and facilities that can sustain the tourism industry. The site comprises near-intact Medieval structures, ruins in stone and archaeologically sensitive open land, making provision of tourist facilities extremely difficult. This raises the possibility of reusing one of the abundant temple structures to cater to some of these needs, akin to the Virupaksha Temple Complex and the Hampi Bazaar. But can it be done? There is a significant absence of research on possibilities of reusing a Hindu Temple. A major reason for this gap in scholarship has been due to the nature of the religion of Hinduism and its adherents. Communal and political forces over time have consistently viewed all Hindu temples as cultural patrimony of the people, despite legal ownership resting with the Government of India. -

Mula Education Society's Arts, Commerce & Science College, Sonai, Newasa- 414105, MS, India *Corresponding Author: Email- [email protected] Received: November 01, 2012; Accepted: December 06, 2012 Abstract- Tools crafted by proto-humans that have been dated back two million years have been discovered in the northwestern part of the subcontinent. The ancient history of the region includes some of South Asia's oldest settlements and some of its major civilizations. The earli- est archaeological site in the subcontinent is the palaeolithic hominid site in the Soan River valley. Soanian sites are found in the Sivalik region across what are now India, Pakistan, and Nepal. The Mesolithic period in the Indian subcontinent was followed by the Neolithic period, when more extensive settlement of the subcontinent occurred after the end of the last Ice Age approximately 12,000 years ago. The first confirmed semipermanent settlements appeared 9,000 years ago in the Bhimbetka rock shelters in modern Madhya Pradesh, India. The entire region may be divided into three distinct geographical units – The Ganga Plain, the Vindhya-Kaimur ranges and the Saryupar region. The eastern Uttar Pradesh has been the cradle of Indian Culture and civilization. It is the land associated with the story of Ramayana. The deductive portions of the Mahabharta are supposed to have got their final shape in this region. The area was the nerve centre of political, economic and religious upheavels of 6th century B.C. -

CC-1/GE-1: HISTORY OF INDIA FROM EARLIEST TIMES UP TO 300 CE II. A BROAD SURVEY OF PALAEOLITHIC, MESOLITHIC AND NEOLITHIC CULTURES NOTE-2 MESOLITHIC AGE The Pleistocene geological era made way for the Holocene about 10,000 years ago. Many environmental changes took place during this transition and there are detailed profiles of climatic patterns for some parts of the subcontinent. Towards the end of the Pleistocene or beginning of the Holocene, there were certain changes in the stone tool kits of prehistoric people. People started making and using very small tools referred to by prehistorians as microliths. At sites such as Patne, where there is a long and continuous stratigraphic sequence of prehistoric occupation, the gradual decrease in the size of stone tools can be seen very clearly. The term epi-palaeolithic is sometimes used for the transitional stage of tools that are smaller than those typical of the upper palaeolithic, but smaller than microliths. Changes in tool kits must have been related to changes in environmental factors, but such detailed connections have not been fully worked out. The term Mesolithic is generally used for post-Pleistocene (i.e., Holocene) hunting-gathering stone age cultures marked by the use of microliths. MICROLITHS Microliths range in length from under 1 cm to 5 cm. The tools are mostly made on short parallel-sided blades made of crypto-crystalline silica stone such as quartzite, chert, chalcedony, jasper, and agate. Microliths are usually classified into ‘geometric’ and ‘non-geometric’ types. Some microliths may have been used as tools in themselves, but many must have been hafted, singly or in large numbers, onto wooden or bone handles to make composite tools. -

Chirand Chalcolithic Culture Dr. Dilip Kumar Assistant Professor (Guest) Dept. of Ancient Indian History & Archaeology, Patna University, Patna Paper – CC-XI, Sem. – III With the end of the Neolithic Age, several cultures started using metal, mostly copper and low grade bronze. The culture based on the use of copper and stone was termed as Chalcolithic meaning stone-copper Phase. In India, it spanned around 2000 BC to 700 BC. This culture was mainly seen in Pre-Harappan phase, but at many places it extended to Post-Harappan phase too. The people were mostly rural and lived near hills and rivers. The Chalcolithic culture corresponds to the farming communities, namely Kayatha, Ahar or Banas, Malwa, and Jorwe. The term Chalcolithic is a combination of two words- Chalco+Lithic was derived from the Greek words "khalkos" + "líthos" which means "copper" and "stone" or Copper Age. It is also known as the Eneolithic (from Latin aeneus "of copper") is an archaeological period that is usually considered to be part of the broader Neolithic (although it was originally defined as a transition between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age). Chirand is an archaeological site in the Saran district of Bihar, situated on the northern bank of the Ganga River. It has a large pre-historic mound, known for its continuous archaeological record from the Neolithic age to the reign of the Pal dynasty who ruled during the pre-medieval period; the excavations in Chirand have revealed stratified Neolithic and Iron Age settlements, transitions in human habitation patterns dating from 2500 BC to 30 AD. -

AGRAWAL and SHEELA KUSUMGAR Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Bombay-5 This date list is comprised of archaeologic and geophysical samples. The latter are in continuation of our investigations of bomb-produced radiocarbon in atmospheric carbon dioxide reported in Tata V. We con- tinue to count samples in the form of methane; the techniques used have been described elsewhere (Agrawal et al., 1965). Radiocarbon dates presented below are based on C'4 half-life value of 5568 vr. For conversion to A.D./B.C, scale, 1950 A.D. has been used as base vr. Our modern reference standard is 95% activity of N.B.S. oxalic acid. GENERAL COMMENT Radiocarbon dating in India has been mainly confined to Neolithic and Chalcolithic cultures. Despite the dearth of datable material, at- tempts at evolving an absolute chronology for Stone-age cultures have now been started. Bone and shell samples were measured for some Micro- lithic cultures. Rock-shelters of Uttar Pradesh were dated ca. 2400 B.C. (TF-419). Adamgarh rock-shelters were dated ca. 5500 B.C. (TF-120, Radiocarbon, 1968, v. 10, p. 131). Kayatha culture of Madhya Pradesh ap- pears to date from ca. 2000 B.C. Chirand Black-and-Red ware date (TF- 444) confirms the earlier dates (Radiocarbon, 1966, v. 8, p. 442). Terdal Neolithic culture was dated ca. 1800 B.C. A megalith from Halingali was dated ca. 100 B.C. Brief summaries of these excavations are available in Ghosh (1961-1966). -

Cristina Castillo October 2013 Institute of Archaeology, UCL 2 Abstract The Thai-Malay Peninsula lies at the heart of Southeast Asia. Geographically, the narrowest point is forty kilometres and forms a barrier against straightforward navigation from the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea and vice versa. This would have either led vessels to cabotage the southernmost part of the peninsula or portage across the peninsula to avoid circumnavigating. The peninsula made easy crossing points strategic locations commercially and politically. Early movements of people along exchange routes would have required areas for rest, ports, repair of boats and replenishment of goods. These feeder stations may have grown to become entrepôts and urban centres. This study investigates the archaeobotany of two sites in the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Khao Sam Kaeo and Phu Khao Thong. Khao Sam Kaeo is located on the east whereas Phu Khao Thong lies on the west of the peninsula and both date to the Late Prehistoric period (ca. 400-100 BC). Khao Sam Kaeo has been identified as the earliest urban site from the Late Prehistoric period in Southeast Asia engaged in trans-Asiatic exchange networks.
