It includes new acquisitions of material, which have been received recently at the CZA. In addition, a new section has been added, the Maps and Plans Section. Some of the collections that make up this section did appear in the previous Guide, but did not make up a separate section. The decision to collect the various collections in one section reflects the large amount of maps and plans that have been acquired in the last two years and the advancements made in this sphere at the CZA. Similarly, general information about two additional collections has been added in the Guide, the Collection of Announcements and the Collection of Badges. Explanation of the symbols, abbreviations and the structure of the Guide: Dates appearing alongside the record groups names, signify: - with regard to institutional archives: the period in which the material that is stored in the CZA was created. - with regard to personal archives: the birth and death dates of the person. Dates have not been given for living people. The numbers in the right-hand margin signify the amount of material comprising the record group, in running meters of shelf space (one running meter includes six boxes of archival material). -

Acta Poloniae Historica 123, 2021 PL ISSN 0001–6829 Marcos Silber https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9823-5216 University of Haifa FROM PARIS TO IZMIR, ROME, AND JERUSALEM: ARMAND LÉVY AS THE MISSING LINK BETWEEN POLISH ROMANTIC NATIONALISM AND ZIONISM Abstract This article focuses on Armand Lévy, Adam Mickiewicz’s secretary, as the missing link between Romantic Polish nationalism and proto-Zionism. It examines Lévy’s interpretation of Adam Mickiewicz’s use of Jewish motifs and how Lévy’s inter- pretation provided his friend and neighbour in Paris, Moses Hess, a German- Jewish socialist, colleague and rival of Karl Marx, with a repertoire he had lacked to structure his proto-Zionist ideas. The article discusses how ideas from one cultural sphere were transferred to others. Mickiewicz, seeking to fi nd ways to strengthen the Polish nation-building process following the partition of his motherland, used his interpretation of the contemporary Jewish Diaspora as a model. His secretary, the Frenchman Armand Lévy, reinterpreted Mickiewicz’s interpretation. His convoluted life course eventu- ally led him to think about the Jews in nationalist terms via the discursive tools he acquired from Mickiewicz. Going beyond the latter’s views, Lévy regarded the Jews as a diasporic nation aspiring to gain political statehood. He championed Jewish messianism as a concrete step towards the Jews’ sovereignty. This, in turn, provided Moses Hess with a repertoire he had lacked until this point: namely, an acquaintance with Jews who were committed to renewing the sovereign Jewish life as of old. PAPER ABSTRACTS Plenary Address Eric H. Cline (The George Washington University), “Dirt, Digging, Dreams, and Drama: Why Presenting Proper Archaeology to the Public is Crucial for the Future of Our Field” We seem to have forgotten that previous generations of Near Eastern archaeologists knew full well the need to bring their work before the eyes of the general public; think especially of V. Gordon Childe, Sir Leonard Woolley, Gertrude Bell, James Henry Breasted, Yigael Yadin, Dame Kathleen Kenyon, and a whole host of others who lectured widely and wrote prolifically. Breasted even created a movie on the exploits of the Oriental Institute, which debuted at Carnegie Hall and then played around the country in the 1930s. The public was hungry for accurate information back then and is still hungry for it today. And yet, with a few exceptions, we have lost sight of this, sacrificed to the goal of achieving tenure and other perceived institutional norms, and have left it to others to tell our stories for us, not always to our satisfaction. I believe that it is time for us all— not just a few, but as many as possible—to once again begin telling our own stories about our findings and presenting our archaeological work in ways that make it relevant, interesting, and engaging to a broader audience. We need to deliver our findings and our thoughts about the ancient world in a way that will not only attract but excite our audiences. Our livelihoods, and the future of the field, depend upon it, for this is true not only for our lectures and writings for the general public but also in our classrooms. -

Beiträge zur Geschichte und Kultur der Juden in der Schweiz Contributions à l’histoire et à la culture des Juifs en Suisse Gaston Haas «Wenn man gewusst hätte, was sich drüben im Reich absp1- ielte 1941-1943 Was man in der Schweiz von der Judenvemichtung wusste Herausgeber: SIG Helbing & Lichtenhahn Beiträge zur Geschichte und Kultur der Juden in der Schweiz Contributions à l’histoire et à la culture des Juifs en Suisse 4 Mit dieser Schriftenreihe möchte der Schweizerische Israelitische Gemein debund wissenschaftliche Arbeiten über die Geschichte und die Kultur der Juden in der Schweiz vom ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit publizieren. Die Monographien, deren Thema und Art der Darstellung von den Autoren selbst gewählt werden, sollen Lücken in der Geschichtsforschung schliessen und damit zum besseren Verständnis einer heute weitgehend integrierten Minderheit in der Schweiz beitragen. «Wenn man gewusst hätte, was sich drüben im Reich abspielte...» Unsichere Zeiten: Rassismus, Fremdenhass, Intoleranz und Antisemitismus sind in Europa wieder auf dem Vormarsch - kaum ein halbes Jahrhundert nach dem Zusammenbruch des Dritten Reichs. Was wusste die Schweiz während des Zweiten Weltkriegs von den Ver brechen der Nationalsozialisten an den europäischen Juden? Nichts, wenn man den Beteuerungen Bundesrats von Steiger, damals verantwortlich für die Flüchtlingspolitik, Glauben schenken will. Aber die Quellen sprechen eine andere Sprache: Berichte von Diplomaten und Reisenden, von Mit gliedern der Schweizer Armee und deutschen Deserteuren, von jüdischen Flüchtlingen und unerschrockenen Journalisten beweisen das Gegenteil. Angst vor deutschen Interventionen, aber bisweilen auch Fremdenhass und unverhohlener Antisemitismus waren die Leitmotive schweizerischer Armee- und Regierungsstellen, um die Grenzen für jüdische Flüchtlinge zu schliessen. -

Bestellung: Chronos Verlag (www.chronos-verlag.ch) Die Unabhängige Expertenkommission: Schweiz – Zweiter Weltkrieg (UEK) erhielt im Dezember 1996 vom Parlament den Auftrag, den Umfang und das Schicksal der infolge der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft in die Schweiz gelangten Vermögenswerte historisch und rechtlich zu untersuchen. In seiner Ernennungsverfügung hat der Bundesrat das Mandat dahingehend präzisiert, dass auch die Bedeutung der Flüchtlingspolitik im Zusammenhang mit den wirtschaftlichen und finanziellen Beziehungen der Schweiz mit den Achsenmächten und den Alliierten geklärt werden müsse. Einigen Juden gelang es, sich durch die Bezahlung eines Lösegelds der Verfolgung durch den NS-Staat zu entziehen. Da einzelne dieser Personen als Flüchtlinge in die Schweiz gelangten und die Bezahlung solcher Gelder auch über Schweizer Privatpersonen und Banken erfolgte, hat die Kommission beschlos- sen, neben der Darstellung -

Studia Judaica 22 (2019), nr 1 (43), s. 81–106 doi:10.4467/24500100STJ.19.005.11232 Dorota Burda-Fischer Post-Holocaust Subjective Memories of the Eastern Carpathians Ethnic Diversity Abstract: The article examines subjective memories of two writers, Stanisław Vincenz and Aharon Appelfeld, who both omit central historical aspects while describing their Holocaust experiences. The works of the Polish writer Stanisław Vincenz and an excerpt from a work by the Israeli writer Aharon Appelfeld are interpreted while considering the role of historiographic metafiction in modern literature. Though the experiences of both authors are fairly different, their si- lence may be treated as an act of conscious forgetting, or as a mindful choice of Holocaust recollection. It is suggested that this silence actually offers a valu- able perspective for both literary and historical research. While Appelfeld’s ex- perience of the Holocaust was different from that of Vincenz, the silence of the authors carries profound meanings. In the notes of Irena Vincenz dated 1954, we read the following words from her husband’s letter to his friend Marian Heleniak: Dzięki serdeczne za pamięć od Was, choć jesteś trochę znieruchomiony, ale pa- mięć to wszystko. Dante Alighieri umieszcza na szczycie góry czyśćcowej dwa strumienie: jeden nazywa się Lethe – zapomnienie i służy do pochłonięcia tego, co w pamięci jest męczące, a drugi Eunoe – życzliwy zamysł, przecedza to, co naj- lepsze w naszej pamięci i zachowuje na zawsze.
