2020–21 Creating Industry's Future Leaders 2020–21 CREATING INDUSTRY’S FUTURE LEADERS “The achievements of the Scholars of the Industry Leaders Fund were a highlight of the Awards Ceremony I officiated at last year. It is really pleasing to see more companies and their leaders recognising that investment in the leader’s brain is likely to generate an ROI at least equal to and often far in excess of investment in equipment or the IOT. • An Inquiry Into Contemporary Australian Extreme Right
THE OTHER RADICALISM: AN INQUIRY INTO CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN EXTREME RIGHT IDEOLOGY, POLITICS AND ORGANIZATION 1975-1995 JAMES SALEAM A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor Of Philosophy Department Of Government And Public Administration University of Sydney Australia December 1999 INTRODUCTION Nothing, except being understood by intelligent people, gives greater pleasure, than being misunderstood by blunderheads. Georges Sorel. _______________________ This Thesis was conceived under singular circumstances. The author was in custody, convicted of offences arising from a 1989 shotgun attack upon the home of Eddie Funde, Representative to Australia of the African National Congress. On October 6 1994, I appeared for Sentence on another charge in the District Court at Parramatta. I had been convicted of participation in an unsuccessful attempt to damage a vehicle belonging to a neo-nazi informer. My Thesis -proposal was tendered as evidence of my prospects for rehabilitation and I was cross-examined about that document. The Judge (whose Sentence was inconsequential) said: … Mr Saleam said in evidence that his doctorate [sic] of philosophy will engage his attention for the foreseeable future; that he has no intention of using these exertions to incite violence.1 I pondered how it was possible to use a Thesis to incite violence. This exercise in courtroom dialectics suggested that my thoughts, a product of my experiences in right-wing politics, were considered acts of subversion. I concluded that the Extreme Right was ‘The Other Radicalism’, understood by State agents as odorous as yesteryear’s Communist Party. My interest in Extreme Right politics derived from a quarter-century involvement therein, at different levels of participation.

INTRODUCTION Dystopia holds sway in all of our imaginations. That concept of control by others and loss of individual freedom is the stuff of our collective nightmare. The very idea that the only freedom is one of conforming to an order that is dictated sends chills down the spine. One thing that is noticeably absent in the books and films of the popular dystopia is any mention of deity or religion. The implied premise seems to be that all such questions were disposed of long before the events of the current story.

The review has been ordered after claims that challenged the integrity of how the ABC audits figures. ABC chairman Stephen Hollings said the review would encompass the organisation’s rules, definitions, and auditing procedures as well as the long-running issue of more frequent circulation data. He predicted the findings would be put to the ABC general committee for a vote within three months. Hollings said the process had been “accelerated” in light of recent claims that newspaper and magazine publishers were still using free or discounted copies to boost figures.

THE HONOURABLE KEVIN RUDD AC 26th Prime Minister of Australia SUBMISSION TO THE SENATE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS INQUIRY INTO MEDIA DIVERSITY IN AUSTRALIA “I reached the conclusion that you can venerate a contest of ideas, if you will, and we all do and that’s important, but it shouldn’t be in a way that hides agendas. A contest of ideas shouldn’t be used to legitimise disinformation. And I think it’s often taken advantage of. And I think at great news organisations, the mission really should be to introduce fact to disperse doubt — not to sow doubt, to obscure fact, if you will.” James Murdoch on why he resigned from News Corporation quoted in The New York Times, 10 October 2020 Introduction This statement from James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch and a person who has been at the centre of the Murdoch media empire for the last 20 years, should give all Australians pause. This is a statement from the heart of the organisation. It is a not a statement from me, or from any other political leader. And it was made within days of my launching a national petition into the abuse of Rupert Murdoch’s media monopoly powers in October 2020. Of itself, James Murdoch’s statement should cause the Australian body politic to pause and to take stock on the cumulative impact of this systematic campaign of “hidden agendas” and “disinformation” on the life of our democracy. It’s what I call a “cancer on democracy”. 1. I thank the Senate for convening this inquiry.
