Its trustees, administrators, faculty, and students have gained their places by election, appoint- ment, or admission. For a longer or shorter period of time they have helped shape College policies and programs. Presumably they have benefited from the experience. Eventually, allhave yielded (or will yield) their seats to successors. For more than a century and a half, Gettysburg College has survived as the generations of allthose who have given it life have come and gone. Another major purpose of this work has been to stress the history of the College as an educational institution whose policies and pro- grams have been influenced invarious ways and invarying degrees by the surrounding community (since 1863 one nationally, even internationally, known), by its long continuing relationships with the Lutheran church, and by its consistent awareness that it is an integral part of the large and growing American enterprise in higher education. A third major purpose has been to present the historical facts of the College's past in such a way as to leave to the reader ample (although not complete) opportunity to decide for himself or herself whether or not the policies and programs pursued by the men and women responsible for its welfare since 1832 were wise and proper. Ultimately, those who read this account seriously should evaluate the evidence presented and then decide for themselves how salutary an influence Gettysburg College has exercised in advancing the cause of liberal education. No person can write an account which completely recreates the past. The best one can do is search for as many surviving primary sources as possible, use every available means to determine their credibility, and then construct an account characterized by what his- torians sometimes call verisimilitude. That is what Ihave tried to do. As a former student, alumnus, faculty member, former adminis- trator, and a Lutheran, my association with Gettysburg College spans almost 30 percent of its existence to date. This is at once an advantage and a disadvantage for one who assumes the respon- sibility for writing about its past. When Martin Luther was nine, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas; in 15 19, while he debated Dr. John Eck at Leipzig, a fellow-subject of Emperor Charles V, Hernando Cortez, began the conquest of Mexico. Walther, the great nineteenth-century German-American churchman, has some- times been dubbed by his admirers “the American Luther.”1 While all comparisons of this nature have their limitations, there is a lot of truth in this appellation. Similarly, we would like to suggest that Charles Porterfield Krauth, in light of the unique gifts and abilities with which he was endowed, and in light of the thoroughness and balance of his mature theological work, can fittingly be styled “the American Chemnitz.” Krauth was in fact an avid student of the writings of the Second Martin, and he absorbed much from him in both form and substance. It is also quite apparent that the mature Krauth always attempted to follow a noticeably Chemnitzian, “Concordistic” approach in the fulfillment of his calling as a teacher of the church in nineteenth-century America. We will return to these thoughts in a little while. Be- fore that, though, we should spend some time in examining Krauth’s familial and ecclesiastical origins, and the historical context of his development as a confessor of God’s timeless truth. Krauth’s Origins In the words of Walther, Krauth was, without a doubt, the most eminent man in the English Lutheran Church of this country, a man of rare learning, at home no less in the old than in modern theology, and, what is of greatest import, whole-heartedly devoted to the pure doctrine of our Church, as he had learned to understand it, a noble man and without guile.2 But Krauth’s pathway to this kind of informed Confessionalism was not an easy one.

Two Postmaster Generals, Montgomery Blair and John Wanamaker, are portrayed in Chapter 5, "Two Postal Titans." These two men provided leadership which resulted in improved employee attitudes and new services to customers, such as free rural delivery and pneumatic tubes. Chapter 6, "Postal Stamps," tells the history of the postage stamp, and how a stamp is developed. Chapter 7, "Moving the Mail," presents a history of the mail service and the different modes of transportation on which it depends.

    Charles Warren Fairbanks and the Republican National Convention of 1900: A Memoir Lewis L. Gould* When Republicans gathered in their national conventions in the early twentieth century and thoughts turned to the vice-presidency, the name of Senator Charles Warren Fair- banks of Indiana came readily to mind. In 1904 he was Theo- dore Roosevelt’s running mate, and he spent the years 1905 to 1909 in the relative obscurity that the president’s energy marked out for the vice-president. When Charles Evans Hughes of New York was nominated to run against Woodrow Wilson in 1916, Fairbanks was once again selected to balance the GOP ticket. Though not a candidate for the place, he “felt it my duty to accept” when the second nomination came to him, although this time the Republican ticket did not win.’ Fairbanks had a chance at the vice-presidency even earlier. In 1900 he was mentioned as a possible nominee with President William McKinley and could have received the president’s en- dorsement had he expressed interest. Fairbanks pondered the matter, as he later recalled, and may have desired the place. The circumstances that thrust Theodore Roosevelt into the vice-presidency in 1900, however, were too powerful for anyone to overcome, and when McKinley died from the effects of an assassin’s bullet on September 14, 1901, it was Roosevelt who succeeded him in the White House. Fifteen years later Charles S. Olcott became William McKinley’s official biographer.2 In the course of his research, Olcott sought memoranda on central events of the president’s * Lewis L.
