Moses came with such a shining face so that everything sparkled in his eyes. It was as if his face had rays;2 that is, it was glowing, so that people could not remain before it; rather, he had to cover3 his face when he wanted to speak with the children of Israe1.4 When he climbed up the mountain to God, he took off the cover; but when he returned to the children of Israel, he again put the veil before his eyes [Ex 34:29-35]. 'Luther himself prepared the Church Postils for Advent through Lent. The press of other duties led Luther to entrust the preparation of the remaining Church Postils to Caspar Cruciger (1504-1548). Cruciger's normal practice was to choose a sermon of Luther on the Historic Epistle or Gospel reading, edit it, and publish this as the Church Postil, which met with Luther's full approval. For the Church Postil on the Epistle read­ ing for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity on 2 Co 3:4-11, Cruciger chose the sermon series Luther preached in August and September 1535 (Pr 1566-1570). In his editing of these sermons, Cruciger chose to omit most of the last sermon in which Luther dealt especially with the veil of Moses.

    The Quest for an American Lutheran Theology: Augustana and Lutheran Quarterly by Maria E. Erling he Augustana Synod’s 1948 centennial commemorated the Tfounding of its fi rst congregation.1 The seminary’s theological journal, The Augustana Quarterly, marked the anniversary by introducing readers to their Swedish heritage. Historical essays by Hilding Pleijel and others on nineteenth-century church life in Sweden explained how Swedish rural piety shaped personal and social life. Gustaf Aulen and Anders Nygren brought Swedish theology, with its fresh approach to the post-war crisis, to Augustana’s fully Americanized readership. The Augustana Quarterly renewed the relationship between Sweden and America at a crucial time. Lutheran leaders, especially in Scandinavia, were emerging from the crisis of the war with a profound sense that the future of Lutheranism itself depended on a fresh articulation of its Reformation theological heritage. They wanted and needed an American audience, while Lutherans in the United States also sought to participate in this work of theological renewal. American Lutheran relief eff orts had convinced Europeans of the American reputation for activism, but Germans and Scandinavians were suspicious of activism in theology, even though quietism was now demonstrably far worse. A new articulation of Lutheran theology was a part of the reconstruction eff ort needed to restore the spiritual legacy of the churches in the wake of the seeming capitulation of German Lutheranism to the totalitarian Nazi state. The Augustana Quarterly and The Lutheran Church Quarterly (a jointly produced journal from Gettysburg and Philadelphia) both worked to reorient Lutheran theology to address the needs of the hour.

Christ is prophesied, witnessed, predicted, typified, and prefigured; but apart from a few alleged christophanic appearances, he is largely the subject of another, historically subsequent Testament. This thesis surveys the christological approaches to the Old Testament since the early 20th century breach made within historicism, introduces a patristic mindset, proposes an ontological foundation to a sacramental (real-presence) approach, then demonstrates this through a reading of Zechariah 9-14. The goal is to bring together three arenas of study—exegetical, historical, theological—and demonstrate how their united lens clarifies the substantial referent of Scripture, namely Christ. The character of the OT witness is thus presented in christological terms, suggesting a reading that recognizes the divine person within the text itself, at home in the sensus literalis. By way of analogy to the Cyrillian hypostatic union and a Lutheran eucharistic comprehension, the task is to show how one encounters the hypostasis of Christ by means of the text’s literal sense.

When Martin Luther was nine, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas; in 15 19, while he debated Dr. John Eck at Leipzig, a fellow-subject of Emperor Charles V, Hernando Cortez, began the conquest of Mexico. Philip Melanc ht hon, the "Great Confessor," was com.posing the Augustana at about the time Francisco Pizarro was occupying the Inca Empire in Peru. By the time of Melancht hon's death in 1560, the Americas had been opened up to European settlement. A related theme of equal interest is that of the American dis- covery of the Reformation. These two questions which are often considered together and which are as inseparably related as Siamese twins have become increasingly important in our day when Lutheranism is fighting for its identity and life. Today most of the Lutheran pastors and teachers throughout the world sub- scribe, at least pro forma, all the confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran church: the ancient catholic creeds and the great Lutheran confessions of the 16th century, i.e. the Augsburg Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Luther's two catechisms, the Smalcald Articles and the Formula of Concord. What does such subscription mean? Is such subscription any longer possible in our day of academic freedom and vaunted autonomy, ecu- menisin and dialogue? Many today think that subscription to any creed or confession is no longer viable and can represent only an impossible legalistic yoke upon an evangelical Christian or pastor. This is the conviction not only of Baptists and other traditionally non-credal denominations, but also of such renowned and conservative theologians as Karl Barth who holds that any human formulation of doctrine (as a creed or confession must be) is only a quest, an approximation, and therefore re1ative.l Are such objections valid? Is the Lutheran church able to justify con- fessional subscription today? And is she able to explain and agree on pre- cisely what is meant by such subscription? Today questions concerning the nature and spirit and extent of conies- sianal subscription have become a vexing problem, an enigma or even an embarrassment to many Lutherans.

SWARNS The New York Times WASHINGTON THE fierce battle over the future of America's immigration system is spilling from Capitol Hill onto the airwaves, as conservatives accuse Democrats, human rights groups and even some labor unions of trying to stymie Republican efforts to stem the tide of illegal immigration. But in recent weeks, some commentators and prominent Republicans have turned their swords against another formidable foe in their battle to tighten the borders: the Roman Catholic Church. Immigration has long caused friction between the church, with its advocacy for migrants, and conservatives, who want to slow illegal crossings over the Mexican border. But as Congress wrestles with the fate of the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants, that tension has escalated into a sharp war of words, highlighting the divide among some Republicans and Catholics who have fought side by side on other issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. In December, after the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a tough border security bill that, among other things, would make it a crime to assist illegal immigrants, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops assailed it as extremely punitive and called on its flock to oppose it. Church officials have sent lobbyists to Congress and this month parishes sent members to rallies in Chicago and Washington to push for legislation that would legalize undocumented immigrants and put them on the path to citizenship. Some Republicans are firing back. In February, Representative Tom Tancredo, a Colorado Republican who opposes illegal immigration, took issue with Catholic bishops, among other religious leaders, "for invoking God when arguing for a blanket amnesty" for illegal immigrants.

Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party.

The exhibition features items from the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, Special Collections at the Martin Library of Franklin and Marshall College, the Pennsylvania Folklife Society at the Myrin Library of Ursinus College, as well as the private collections of Eric Claypoole, Patrick J. Donmoyer, and the relatives of barn star artist Milton Hill, especially Harold & Esther (Hill) Derr, Lee Heffner, and Bart Hill. This exhibition catalog is dedicated with gratitude to the memory of barn star artist Milton J. Hill (1887-1972) of Virginville, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and to his wife Gertrude (Strasser) Hill, who supported his work, as well as to his family, especially his daughter Esther (Hill) Derr and her husband Harold Derr; his nephew Bart Hill; his grandson Lee Heffner; his granddaughter Dorian (Derr) Featheroff, and all of his descendants living and departed. A true artist of the stars, Milton Hill’s commitment to the celestial orientation of this unique Pennsylvania art form preserved and continued the folk culture’s traditional views for generations to come.
