United States Army in World War II Mediterranean Theater of Operations Sicily and the Surrender of Italy by Albert N. Garland and Howard McGaw Smyth Assisted by Martin Blumenson CENTER OF MILITARY HISTORY UNITED STATES ARMY WASHINGTON, D.C., 1993 Chapter XIV The Climax Sardinia Versus the Mainland The successful invasion of Sicily clarified strategic problems and enabled the Allies to turn from debate to decision. The Combined Chiefs of Staff at the TRIDENT Conference in May had directed General Eisenhower to knock Italy out of the war and contain the maximum number of German forces, but they had not told him how. Preparing to launch operations beyond the Sicilian Campaign, AFHQ had developed several outline plans: BUTTRESS, invasion of the Italian toe by the British 10 Corps; GOBLET, a thrust at the ball of the Italian foot by the British 5 Corps; BRIMSTONE, invasion of Sardinia; and FIREBRAND, invasion of Corsica. But a firm decision on the specific course of action to be taken was still lacking.1 The four plans, Eisenhower had explained to Churchill during the Algiers meetings in June, pointed to two broad alternative courses. If the Axis resisted vigorously in Sicily, thereby forecasting high Italian morale and a bitter and protracted struggle for the Allies, then BRIMSTONE and FIREBRAND, insular operations, were preferable. Otherwise, operations on the Italian mainland were more promising. Despite Churchill's articulate enthusiasm for the latter course, Eisenhower had made no commitment. He awaited the factual evidence to be furnished in Sicily. Meanwhile, the Americans and British continued to argue over strategy.

Newsletter N° 54 jerusalem cross ordinis equestris sancti sepulchri hierosolymitani @granmagistero.oessh www.oessh.va @GM_oessh Message from the Grand Master Called to follow Jesus enewed by the rich graces of the Easter Season and Pentecost, the liturgy of the Church returns to “Ordinary Time” as we return from Jerusalem to Galilee and listen to His Rinvitation to discipleship. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls us to live the life He lived. Read along in Matthew, chapters 5 through 7, for a portrait of Christ, a portrait indeed that through grace, He would like to paint in each of us! Beginning with the Beatitudes, the DNA of the Christian life, the Sermon challenges us with teachings and standards, which only the saints would find practical, and achievable only through the daily graces of God. Investiture celebrations and regional lieutenancy gatherings have offered me reassuring evidence of our Order’s rich devotion to God and to good works on behalf of Christians in the Holy Land. Hopefully, our pace slackens a bit during these summer days, perhaps offering some moments of interior spiritual renewal. Might we add to our summer reading list a daily few minutes with the New Testament and a prayerful meditation on the Sermon on the Mount? • Foreign News: Where Is Signor X?
Da “Time”, 24 maggio 1943 Foreign News: Where is Signor X? Almost 21 years of Fascism has taught Benito Mussolini to be shrewd as well as ruthless. Last week he toughened the will of his people to fight, by appeals to their patriotism, and by propaganda which made the most of their fierce resentment of British and U.S. bombings. He also sought to reduce the small number pf Italians who might try to cut his throat by independent deals with the Allies. The military conquest of Italy may be no easy task. After the Duce finished his week's activities, political warfare against Italy looked just as difficult, and it was hard to find an alternative to Mussolini for peace or postwar negotiations. No Dorlans. The Duce began by ticking off King Vittorio Emanuele, presumably as insurance against the unlikely prospect that the sour-faced little monarch decides either to abdicate or convert his House of Savoy into a bargain basement for peace terms. Mussolini pointedly recalled a decree of May 10, 1936, which elevated him to rank jointly with the King as "first marshal of Italy." Thus the King (constitutionally Commander in Chief of all armed forces) can legally make overtures to the Allies only with the consent and participation of the Duce. Italy has six other marshals. Mussolini last week recalled five of them to active service.* Most of these men had been disgraced previously to cover up Italian defeats. Some of them have the backing of financial and industrial groups which might desert Mussolini if they could make a better deal.

If the British were to militarily oppose to Italy or even to close the Suez Canal, the Italian war effort would be prohibitively costly and would probably fail. Moreover, the British sent signals that could have been interpreted as evidence of high resolve (a willingness to incur great costs to defend Ethiopia and the League of Nations). In mid-September Foreign Secretary Samuel Hoare made an impassioned pledge that Britain would be “second to none” in defending its League obligations.

MUSSOLINI’S FIRST AGGRESSION: THE CORFU ULTIMATUM General Enrico Tellini and his staff, members of an International Commission appointed by the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris to délimité the Albanian - Greek frontier, were murdered by unknown assas sins on August 27, 1923, on Greek territory near the Albanian frontier. Word of the murder first reached Mussolini via the secretary of the Italian Consulate at Janina, Andrea Liverani, whose telegram arrived in Rome at 6: 15 on the evening of August 27. 1 Almost simultaneously another cable was dispatched by Captain de Limperany, secretary of the Commission of Delimitation to the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris, to inform them of the tragic news.2 3 * * The events that were now to move with such breath taking speed were to be centered in three cities, Rome, London and Paris. Throughout the first days the advantage of initiative was to be in the hands of Rome, while the latter two cities would be straddled with the unappetizing role of merely reacting to actions already instituted in Rome. Mussolini’s reaction upon the arrival of the tragic news from Janina was, according to an eye witness, the then chief of the Near Eastern Divi sion of the Foreign Office, "immediately violent, intransigeant”.9 His cable in the early morning hours of August 28 to the Italian Minister in Athens, Giulio Cesare Montagna, is revealing. The Duce felt that "without diminishing seriously the responsibility that is incumbent upon Greece, immediate and exemplary punishment of the culprits is indis- 1. Segle XX. Revista catalana d’història, 7 (2014), 1-12 ISSN: 1889-1152 Axis Diplomacy in Comparison: The Japanese and Italian Foreign Ministry in the 1930s1 Ken Ishida University of Chiba (Japan) The conventional wisdom about the Tripartite Alliance between Italy, Ger- many and Japan was that the decision-makers of these three countries shared their sense of international isolation. The three Axis powers lacked not only the united ideology but also common interests, and therefore the substance of the alliance was very hollow.2 However, it must also be said that there are relatively few works that examine this conventional wisdom through detailed comparative analyses of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and ultranationalist Japan, and as a result, there is a tendency for the historians to accept it uncritically.3 This article is in- tended to tackle this shortcoming of historiography by offering an analysis from comparative perspective. It will concentrate on examining the commonalities and differences between Italy and Japan, specifically on the role of diplomats and foreign ministries in diplomatic policy-making process of respective nations. 1 Rebut: 15.09.2014 – Acceptat: 11.11.2014 2 ken ishida, “the german-japanese-italian axis as seen from fascist italy,” ed. by kudo akira, tajima nobuo and erich pauer, japan and germany: two latecomers to the world stage, 1890-1945. vol. ii: the pluralistic dynamic of the formation of the axis, (folkestone: global oriental ltd, 2009), pp. 262-301. 3 Some of the few works that make a comparative analysis among these three nations are; Paul Brooker, The Faces of Fraternalism: Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan, (Oxford: Cla- rendon Press, 1991); Bernd Martin, Japan and Germany in the Modern World, (Providence: Bergh- ahn Books, 1995); MacGregor Knox, Common Destiny: Dictatorship, Foreign Policy, and War in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000); Aristotle A.

Studia z Dziejów Rosji i Europy Ś rodkowo-Wschodniej ■ LII-SI(2) Konrad Sebastian Morawski Oleszyce–Rzeszów Gabriele D’Annunzio’s Coup in Rijeka (1919–1920) in the Context of Italian-Yugoslavian Relations Zarys treści: Artykuł zawiera omówienie przewrotu dokonanego przez Gabriele D’Annunzia w Rijece i sprawowaniu przez niego władzy w tym mieście w latach 1919–1920. Outline of content: Th e article presents an overview of the coup d’état carried out by Gabriele D’Annunzio in Rijeka, and his rule in that city in 1919–1920. Following the coup, the famous Italian poet and hero of the Great War tried to annex the city into Italy, although his actions were not agreed with the country’s government. Th ese events contributed to a crisis in relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, while the issue of Rijeka’s status in the post-war geopolitical sys- tem became also the subject of intense talks between representatives of the major powers taking part in the Paris peace conference, i.e.

Myth and Reality in the Fascist War: The Ministry of Popular Culture and Italian Propaganda on the Bombing of Civilians, 1938-1943 Luigi Petrella Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology 26 October 2015 a Abstract New studies that focus on the air bombardment of civilians in Italy during the Second World War regard the Italian home front as a privileged ‘observation post’ from which to study the relationship between Fascism and society during the years of the collapse of Mussolini’s regime. Yet the role of propaganda, on the specific aspect of people vulnerability to total war, in influencing that relationship, has received little attention. The main aim of this work is to reconstruct the narrative of bombing and of civilians’ life in Italy during the first phase of the war (1940-1943) as it emerges from reports, stories and works of invention in the Italian media. These have been compared with both the public reaction and the regime propaganda that had constructed some of the most powerful ideological tenets of the Italian Fascism during the 1930s, first of all the myth of air power and the creation of a ‘new man’. Investigating specific sections of the home front and situating the breakup of the Italian morale at the time of the first serious setbacks of Mussolini’s armies at the end of 1940, this research focuses in particular on the effectiveness - or otherwise - of government policies in steering the media and cultural activities that reflected life in wartime Italy. Drawing mostly on primary sources such as government papers, personal memoirs, censored letters and confidential reports, the study argues that propaganda’s failure to continue to bolster Fascist myths was due both to the catastrophic impact of war on civilians’ life and to institutional and political flaws.
