The village is situated at the head of Loch na Lathaich with stunning white sandy beaches close by. The population of Bunessan and the sur- rounding areas is approximately 200 people. Some five miles away lies the village of Fionnphort which is host to the ferry port for sailings to the famous Island of Iona where main attractions include Iona Abbey and Skerryvore Light- house. Many also come here to take boat trips to Staffa and Fingal's Cave, the Treshnish Isles, or simply to see the local sea life and birds. The Island of Mull is the most accessible of all the Inner Hebridean Islands, only a two hour drive north-west of Glasgow and a 45 minute sailing from Oban. The island is wonderfully diverse, with towering sea cliffs, powder white sandy beaches and a large mountain range with the peak of Ben More rising to over 3,000 feet. The island is home to a diverse range of wildlife and is one of the best places in Europe to participate in Wildlife Tourism, with regular sightings of the rare Golden Eagle and the White Tailed Sea Eagle. There is also an abundance of marine life to be seen with several wildlife tours offering sightings of whales, otters, dolphins and seals. A thriving ecotourism industry has sprung up on the Island, as publicised by the BBC’s Springwatch pro- gramme, presented by Simon King. The programme described Mull as one of Britain's Top 10 Wildlife Destinations. .
