Rich Ward and DS Anna Burton Download high resolution image Issued on 30/4/18 at 7:34 a.m. The team who investigated a horrific attack in which a man was doused in acid while he slept have been presented with a Crown Court Commendation. Daniel Rotariu sustained burns to 32% of his body and lost the sight in both eyes as a result of the incident. The woman he had been in a relationship with – Katie Leong – was found guilty of trying to kill Daniel and was given a 34-year life sentence for attempted murder following a trial in March last year. The judge presiding over case publicly commended the actions of the investigating team, particularly highlighting the “measured and careful judgment, combined with enormous commitment and tireless efforts”. Superintendent Richard Ward, DS Anna Burton, DC Kim Welford, DS Sarah Walker and CSI Christian Georg all received their commendation at an awards ceremony held at Leicestershire Police Headquarters yesterday (Friday 27 April). Superintendent Richard Ward, who led the investigation, said: “Operation Gates was a complex and difficult investigation and the injuries caused to the victim were horrific and life threatening. “The scene faced by the initial officers who attended on the night was dangerous and chaotic, yet they were able to provide vital first aid to the victim Daniel Rotariu, whilst also securing crucial evidence. “My investigation team had to deal with considerable challenges, not least the difficulties at the scene which was covered in sulphuric acid, making it inherently unsafe. They were also unable to speak with Daniel for two months as he was receiving lifesaving care in hospital. “The offender Katie Leong was given a 34 year life sentence attempted murder which illustrates the gravity and gruesome nature of this crime which was premeditated and astonishingly cruel.” LEICESTERSHIRE POLICE POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM EASTERN COUNTIES NPA NPA commander - Inspector Gavin Drummond Inspector Gavin Drummond joined Leicestershire Police in 2003 where he performed a variety of uniformed roles in the Hinckley area. It is clear that there are already very strong community and partnership links across the area, something which I am particularly keen to maintain and build upon. "Having previously worked in Neighbourhood policing I understand the need for effective communication links between the Police, our partners and the communities that we serve in order to identify and address problems and issues.
