Volume 28, Number 8 August 2008 CORNERSTONES of Irwindale Seizing a Golden Opportunity for Valley Commerce By: Adam B. Schiff, D-Pasadena, represents the 29th Congressional District. If you commute in County, you spend too much time behind the wheel - 72 hours a year too much to be exact. Los Angeles is the most Platinum congested region in the nation, and this costs an average commuter $1374 a year more than others spend for time and gasoline. In fact, the average Southern Californian consumes 57 extra gallons of gas a year stuck in traffi c, and with a Silver gallon of gas approaching $5, this is a crushing burden for many families. Silver With millions of frustrated commuters stuck on our freeways, Los Angeles also has the distinction of having the worst year-round pollution in the country. It is an economic and health imperative that we reduce congestion Bronze on our freeways, cut traffi c and commute times, and decrease smog - and investing in mass transit is a big part of the answer. There is no question that the Gold Line Foothill Extension, which will extend the Gold Line from Pasadena to Azusa and beyond to Ontario Airport, will Corporate be a part of our future - but that future should be now. It will not only give AJL A. J. LONGO & ASSOCIATES )NSURANCEs&INANCIAL3ERVICES people a clean, comfortable and cost-effective way to get to work or school,

PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER WITH SOY INK. 12 Irwindale Needs Its Own Zip Code

The Irwindale Chamber of Commerce and the City of Irwindale have put in formal requests to the Santa Ana District Manager of the United States Postal Service for a geographical based zip code. Currently Irwindale Three zip codes residents and businesses are assigned to one of three zip codes primarily identifi ed with other cities. 91706 serves the majority of our community but is fi rst and foremost affi liated with Baldwin Park, 91702 (Azusa) and 91010 (Monrovia) make up the balance. The USPS website even states that there is not a post offi ce in Irwindale, yet we have one located at 16025 Calle del Norte, Irwindale. Not having our own zip code causes a great deal of confusion. Most zip code programs do not recognize Irwindale as the correct city when the zip code is entered. Because zip code programs tend to use the primary city, some of our businesses actually believe they are located in Baldwin Park or Monrovia. Even our Chamber receives mail addressed with Baldwin Park as the city location! Since some of our street names are identical to street names in the other communities it gets even more bewildering for those making deliveries. An example of this is Candywarehouse.com who is located on Third Street in Irwindale. Anytime there is a new delivery person their shipments will most likely go to the Third Street in Baldwin Park instead of the correct address in Irwindale. In addition, most demographics are computed and listed by zip code which is Irwindale’s Post Offi ce is not found. problematic for our city. Most internet searches include Irwindale as part of the other city’s information. The one found for Irwindale incorporated Baldwin Park’s information into it. Presentations were given to all distinguished participants and the afternoon was fi lled with music, carnival activities and great food. Although hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes come to mind when we think of the term disaster, major disasters are not the only causes of business interruptions. More common calamities, such as a building fi re, storms, or vandalism can shut down a business just as quickly as a major disaster and wreak the same amount of economic havoc to the employees and the business itself. This workshop will discuss how today’s technology can help keep your business going and minimize the downtime for a speedy recovery. This session will be a full two-hour workshop designed to help businesses create a safe, solid, and relatively easy-to- implement solution to ensure continuity of business in the case of a disaster of any size and how to avoid a serious interruption of business operations. A comprehensive workbook with forms and templates will be provided to participants.
