Surviving Antigone: Anouilh, Adaptation, and the Archive
SURVIVING ANTIGONE: ANOUILH, ADAPTATION AND THE ARCHIVE Katelyn J. Buis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2014 Committee: Cynthia Baron, Advisor Jonathan Chambers ii ABSTRACT Dr. Cynthia Baron, Advisor The myth of Antigone has been established as a preeminent one in political and philosophical debate. One incarnation of the myth is of particular interest here. Jean Anouilh’s Antigone opened in Paris, 1944. A political and then philosophical debate immediately arose in response to the show. Anouilh’s Antigone remains a well-known play, yet few people know about its controversial history or the significance of its translation into English immediately after the war. It is this history and adaptation of Anouilh’s contested Antigone that defines my inquiry. I intend to reopen interpretive discourse about this play by exploring its origins, its journey, and the archival limitations and motivations controlling its legacy and reception to this day. By creating a space in which multiple readings of this play can exist, I consider adaptation studies and archival theory and practice in the form of theatre history, with a view to dismantle some of the misconceptions this play has experienced for over sixty years. This is an investigation into the survival of Anouilh’s Antigone since its premiere in 1944. I begin with a brief overview of the original performance of Jean Anouilh’s Antigone and the significant political controversy it caused. The second chapter centers on the changing reception of Anouilh’s Antigone beginning with the liberation of Paris to its premiere on the Broadway stage the following year. -

JUtf y DISSERTATION COMMITTEE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to Dr. Willis H. Bowen, who directed this dissertation. It was in his courses that I first became acquainted with the theater of Armand Salacrou, indeed, with the whole literature of France. I have drawn considerably upon his knowledge and vast biblio graphical resources in the preparation of this work, but I am even more deeply indebted to him for his warm friendship and intellectual guidance throughout all my studies. I also wish to thank the members of my reading com mittee, Professors Besse Clement, Lowell Dunham, Seymour Feiler, Jambes Abbott and Melvin Toison, Jr., for their helpful suggestions and their patience and kindness over too many years. It is impossible to guage my debt to my mother, Marian Pope Talton, who would so much have liked to see this moment, and my wife, Susan, without whose gentle insist ence the moment would never have arrived. -

Department of The University of British Columbia, Vancouver 3, Canada. -

Lettre Aux Amis De La Police 2021-2
Lettre aux amis d’une police et d’une gendarmerie républicaines et protectrices des citoyens… 21 ____________________________ 20 /n°2 e (Hiver 2020-21 / XIII année) Bertrand Tavernier French film director Bertrand Tavernier died this week at the age of 79, after a couple of years of health problems. Bertrand masterminded and directed the 1986 film ‘Round Midnight, which for my money is the only jazz film that rings true. He welcomed all of our daily script corrections to make a more realistic film. Many of us who worked on the film remained lifelong friends with Bertrand, who was a consummate filmmaker with a great creative range. This photo is from a day we spent shooting at Studio Davout in Paris. Left to right: Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Michael Cuscuna, Billy Higgins, Herbie Hancock, Mads Vinding and Ron Carter. -

Thomas, Ph.D. © 2016 Stephanie Carin Elfont ii ABSTRACT The intent of this thesis is to investigate the prominence of audience ridicule in the French theatre from the medieval sottie to Ionescan Absurdism of the mid-twentieth century. Throughout the history of French drama, playwrights have exploited this tactic with either the purpose of invoking an emotional or intellectual response or inciting a social or political call to action.
