Nothing compares to being here. Plain and simple. The fantastic feats of athleticism on the track, the excitement and emotion in the stands, the concentration and attention to detail on the dais, and the enticing goods in the vendor village. This is roller derby. We are roller derby. So who will you be today? Will you be persistent and powerful, strong and swift, a leader on the track? Will you be fierce and fast and forceful, a goal setter…a record breaker? Will you be focused and creative? Will you capture that amazing shot? Will you paint your face and put on your colors? Will you chant and sing and cry and scream? One thing is clear—whether you’re a Skater, Official, photographer, announcer, or fan (or any combination thereof), TODAY YOU WILL BE ROLLER DERBY! This weekend wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous amount of support and time our hosts, Mad Rollin’ Dolls, and all of their volunteers have put in. We are excited to welcome you all back to Madison for an action-packed tournament. We last hosted the Eastern Division Championships in 2008, and we are thrilled to host the 2016 WFTDA D1 Playoffs! ABOUT THE MAD ROLLIN’ DOLLS Mad Rollin’ Dolls, Madison’s premier roller derby league, first laced up its skates for the public in late 2004 and began its first full season in 2005. Since then, the dynamic skaters and dedicated volunteers have been providing a sport that not only features pure athleticism, but a punch of serious fun for its many fans. MRD is a grassroots effort run by an all-volunteer group of skaters and non-skaters. These derby enthusiasts are behind everything from practices and bouts to merchandise and community involvement. It is the mission of Mad Rollin’ Dolls to provide a safe, inclusionary space to foster the development of a competitive women’s flat track roller derby athletic program, build leadership skills through volunteer opportunities, and make a positive impact in our community by serving as role models for our peers and future generations. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track.

    Warrior fall 2017 LINCOLNN LUTHERANe 2016-2017w sANNUAL REPORT Dear Warrior Family and Friends, THANK you for your support and prayers through the past school year. Thank you for sending your children to Lincoln Lutheran and thank you for your generous support through volunteering and financial support. The last year saw an increase in the number of students, many hours of volunteering that allowed events to happen, and a very successful year of financial support. A few of the successes during the past year: • Large attendance for Grandparent’s Day • Successful and fun golf tournament • Over 800 in attendence for all Lutheran School chapel during National Lutheran Schools Week • Large attendance and financial support through the annual Gala • Great start to the Now Through Eternity campaign resulting in: o Growth in scholarship endowments o Additional debt reduction o Tuition increase for 2017-18 is the lowest since 2001 o Construction of a multi-use building will begin in September 2017 The one question that I am frequently asked is “How can you ask people for money?” To tell you the truth it is not hard at all when you believe in the product you are “selling”. I believe in Lincoln Lutheran and the Christ-centered education received by students. My job is to “plant the seed” by telling the story and the Holy Spirit does the work in the hearts of people that hear the story and experience Lincoln Lutheran. My prayer for this next school year is to meet more of the special people that make Lincoln Lutheran what it is today and together we can continue to make a difference in the lives of young men and women, Today, Tomorrow, and Forever.

The Pershing arena can seat up to 7,000 persons and offers a 16,000 square foot arena floor. Parking Parking is available at seven covered commercial lots within four blocks of Pershing. Street parking is also avail- able.
