    SARAWAK DIGITAL ECONOMY STRATEGY 2018 - 2022 AN OVERVIEW BOOKLET FOREWORD My first priority for Sarawak since becoming the Chief Minister on the 13th January 2017 was to bring about a major paradigm shift in our development strategy. We have so far been relying heavily on non-renewable resources for our economic development and this is clearly not sustainable in the long run. It was quite obvious, then, with the whole world focused on emerging technologies such as gaming and animation, big data, cloud computing, blockchains, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy, we have to enter without hesitation into the digital world so that Sarawak will have a chance of enjoying high income. I immediately asked the State Secretary to organise an international conference on the digital economy in Sarawak and spearhead the Digital Economy Transformation. The first International ICT Infrastructure and Digital Economy Sarawak (IDECS) - Transforming Sarawak through the Digital Economy - was held on the 3rd and 4th of April 2017 in Kuching featuring notable local and international speakers with over 1,500 delegates. During the closing ceremony of the conference, I also announced that Sarawak will set up the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS), as well as a strategic plan for developing the digital economy of Sarawak. I am therefore pleased to present the five years Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy (2018-2022), in which we set out the possible directions Sarawak can take in order to leapfrog into the digital economy to be at the forefront of the digital world.

    26 AUG 2001 Sarawak-Polls STOP RAISING ISSUE OF CANDIDATE LINEUP, SAYS DR MASING KUCHING, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Leaders of Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), a component party of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN), should stop raising the issue of the party's candidate lineup, its publicity chief, Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing, said today. "As far as I am concerned, the candidate lineup is final as announced by party president Datuk Amar Leo Moggie yesterday," he told reporters after opening a contemporary ceramics exhibition on "Bunga Terung" at a gallery at the waterfront here. He said the leaders should now close ranks and ensure that the BN won the state election. Moggie had said that the list, which had been endorsed by the party's supreme council, was official and only awaiting endorsement from BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Moggie's announcement put to rest speculations that PBDS deputy president Datuk Daniel Tajem was attempting to make a comeback to active politics. It also meant that Tajem will not be getting PBDS's ticket to contest in the upcoming election despite speculations that he would be replacing Mong Dagang for the Bukit Begunan state seat, which was once Tajem's stronghold for 22 years. Moggie had also said that incumbent Datuk Sng Chee Hua (Pelagus) would be replaced by his 22-year old son, Larry, a new trend for PBDS which is to inject the youth spirit into politics. The other PBDS incumbents retained are Dublin Unting (Batang Ai), Gabriel Adit (Ngemah), Joseph Entulu (Tamin), John Sikie Tayai (Kakus), Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing (Baleh) and Stanley Ajang (Belaga).

    03 JUL 1996 Uruguay-Proton URUGUAY INVITES PROTON TO SET UP PLANT KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 (Bernama) -- Uruguay has invited Malaysia to set up plants there for assembling or manufacturing cars for export to countries in the region. Foreign Ministry Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Ali said today that since Uruguay did not have its own automobile industry, it felt that Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (Proton) could use it as a base to export to Brazil and Argentina. As a member of the Mercosur economic cooperation, which also includes Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, Uruguay has the trade facilities and export quota in several areas like automobile industry to move into these countries. "This is certainly a very attractive offer and it will be conveyed to Proton," Abdul Halim told reporters after a meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Uruguayan President Dr Julio Maria Sanguinetti at the Prime Minister's Department here. This is among several fields that have been identified for Malaysian investors to venture into in Uruguay, apart from infrastructure development like building of roads, bridges, ports and tourism facilities. Sanguinetti arrived yesterday for a five-day visit at the invitation of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Ja'afar to strengthen bilateral ties in line with South-South cooperation. Halim said Dr Mahathir and Sanguinetti also exchanged views on developments in their respective regions. While Uruguay said it could be a gateway into the Mercosur market for Malaysian goods, Malaysia made known its potential as a base for Uruguay's products to penetrate the Asean countries.

    12/12/1999 Perak sokong senarai Kabinet IPOH: Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali berkata Kerajaan Perak menyokong penuh senarai Kabinet yang diumumkan Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, kelmarin, bagi menyediakan barisan pemimpin pelapis pada masa depan. Menurutnya, pelantikan beberapa menteri muda seperti Hishammuddin Hussein (Belia dan Sukan); Datuk Nazri Abdul Aziz (Pembangunan Usahawan) dan Datuk Ong Ka Ting (Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan) jelas memperlihatkan barisan pemimpin pelapis dilatih untuk tujuan itu. Katanya, ini sejajar dengan kenyataan Dr Mahathir bahawa ini penggal terakhir beliau menjadi Perdana Menteri. Tajol Rosli berkata, kerajaan negeri berterima kasih kepada Perdana Menteri kerana melantik beberapa pemimpin atau tokoh dari Perak sebagai menteri kali ini. Mereka ialah Datuk Nazri Abdul Aziz (Pembangunan Usahawan); Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu (Kerja Raya); Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik (Perusahaan Utama); Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz (Perdagangan Antarabangsa dan Industri) serta anak kelahiran Perak, Tan Sri Musa Mohamad sebagai Menteri Pendidikan yang baru. Malah, katanya, Datuk Ong Ka Ting yang dilantik sebagai Menteri Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan yang baru adalah anak kelahiran Lenggong, Perak.     23 MAY 2003 Ling-Politics THE RISE AND FALL OF DR LING LIONG SIK By: Alan Ting KUALA LUMPUR, (Bernama) - He was not seen as a likely presidential candidate of the MCA during the infamous clash between Datuk Dr Neo Yee Pan and Datuk Tan Koon Swan in the 1980s. Having thrown his weight behind Koon Swan, he was like any other "generals" in the bitter party tussle, till a twist of fate propelled him to the helm of the oldest and biggest Chinese party, a job he held for almost 17 years. That twist of fate came on Sept 3, 1986 when he, as the deputy president, was appointed to the top post, replacing Koon Swan who had to resign after being sentenced to a two-year jail and a fine of S$500,000 for criminal breach of trust in Singapore. Born on Sept 18, 1943, Dr Ling had his early education at the King Edward VII School in Taiping before joining the prestigious Royal Military College (RMC) in Sungai Besi. From the RMC, Dr Ling studied medicine at the University of Singapore in 1961 and by 1966, he served as a doctor at Penang General Hospital before opting for private practice in Butterworth in 1975. The medical doctor, with a dead-pan face and gravel voice, launched his political career in 1968 when he joined the MCA and worked his way up to become a Central Committee member in 1974. EARLY YEARS In the same year, he was picked to stand in the Mata Kuching (now called Bagan) parliamentary constituency on an MCA ticket and won, retaining the seat for two subsequent terms.
