Sound Recording in the British Folk Revival: Ideology, Discourse and Practice, 1950–1975
Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters. -
A History of Music in Old Mount Vernon, Ohio with Particular Attention to Woodward Hall and the Nineteenth-Century American Opera House
A HISTORY OF MUSIC IN OLD MOUNT VERNON, OHIO WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO WOODWARD HALL AND THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN OPERA HOUSE A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Bleecker McDaniel, B.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Master's Examination Committee Approved by Dr. Graeme M. Boone, Adviser Dr. Charles M. Atkinson _________________________ Adviser Mr. Christopher R. Weait School of Music ABSTRACT During the antebellum period, the town of Mount Vernon, Ohio had a flourishing music scene that included performances by both local amateur societies and professional touring groups. When Woodward Hall, located on the top floor of a four-story commercial building, opened its doors to the public in 1851, it provided the town with its first dedicated theater. Newspaper items and other early sources show that the hall was a focus of public culture in the 1850s, hosting concerts, plays, lectures, and art exhibits as well as community activities including dances, church fundraisers, and school exhibitions. The early source materials for Mount Vernon, however, like those for many small towns, are lacunary, and especially so in the case of Woodward Hall. These shortcomings are compensated, to some extent, by materials relating to theaters of similar size and age in other towns, which offer points of comparison for the Woodward and prove it to be a typical mid-nineteenth-century American theater in some respects, and a distinctive one in others. Modern-day music histories have heretofore been silent on the subject of music and opera houses in small towns despite Oscar Sonneck’s call, some ninety years ago, for local music historiography as a necessary first step in creating a complete history of American music. -

Agiotfest 2015: Observations by Hilary Paipeti
The AGIOTFEST SPECIAL 95th Edition Agiot 2 This Month ‘Aerial shot at dusk’ By Νικολαος Ζωχιος AgiotFest 2015: observations by Hilary Paipeti. While poor punters at Reading and Glastonbury wallowed in a summer of dismal mud, AgiotFest-ers revelled in a glorious night of music in Cactus Hilton Valley and on the Dry- Grassy Knoll. This seventh year was heavy on the rock, not so much 'heavy rock' as a bit of roll around the shop: British Folk Rock, Mexican Funk Rock, Classic Rock, and Rock with an instrumental twist. British Folk Rock was a product of the late 1960s, a new musical genre pioneered by Fair- port Convention in their three-album collaboration with the inimitable Sandy Denny. Combining elements of folk music presented in a rock format, at its most pure it takes old folk songs and reworks them using modern instruments and techniques - songs like Fair- port's 'Matty Groves'. Or it gives us new songs that derive from a folk tradition, like Led Zepellin’s 'Battle of Evermore' (with Sandy Denny). AgiotFest headliners Leatherat tend towards the latter style, with a more rocky approach, and the 'folk' components are gener- ated in the form of a fiddle soaring over the main theme, and by the rhythms and tonal shifts of the lyrics and melody.
