  • Agiotfest 2015: Observations by Hilary Paipeti
The AGIOTFEST SPECIAL 95th Edition Agiot 2 This Month ‘Aerial shot at dusk’ By Νικολαος Ζωχιος AgiotFest 2015: observations by Hilary Paipeti. While poor punters at Reading and Glastonbury wallowed in a summer of dismal mud, AgiotFest-ers revelled in a glorious night of music in Cactus Hilton Valley and on the Dry- Grassy Knoll. This seventh year was heavy on the rock, not so much 'heavy rock' as a bit of roll around the shop: British Folk Rock, Mexican Funk Rock, Classic Rock, and Rock with an instrumental twist. British Folk Rock was a product of the late 1960s, a new musical genre pioneered by Fair- port Convention in their three-album collaboration with the inimitable Sandy Denny. Combining elements of folk music presented in a rock format, at its most pure it takes old folk songs and reworks them using modern instruments and techniques - songs like Fair- port's 'Matty Groves'. Or it gives us new songs that derive from a folk tradition, like Led Zepellin’s 'Battle of Evermore' (with Sandy Denny). AgiotFest headliners Leatherat tend towards the latter style, with a more rocky approach, and the 'folk' components are gener- ated in the form of a fiddle soaring over the main theme, and by the rhythms and tonal shifts of the lyrics and melody. Issue 386 April 2016 50p Gridlock coming? Is Chipping Norton heading for a traffic nightmare? In 2016/17 we’ll see 350 new homes at Penhurst and Walterbush Road, all bringing Sporting heroes more cars through the town centre…maybe trying to get to Aldi and the doctors! In March County surveyors were in town counting the traffic – in advance of 600 new houses at Tank Farm … but with no sign of an HGV ban or by-pass. The Town Centre car parks are increasingly full up, and parking theatregoers are obstructing Spring St, where there’s a 70- bed Premier Inn on the way. His commitment, skills and enthusiasm were clearly transmitted to us all through his Newsletters – much of which was a catalogue of teams visited, Feasts eaten and ale sampled by him. I cannot hope to match the miles he travelled but as to the rest I will do my best. Ever since the ARM when my election was confirmed I have been overwhelmed by congratulatory good wishes – usually delivered with a wry smile and a slight shaking of the head. Bob and Steve have been very encouraging and wave away those of my friends who suggest that I am mad. John is, of course, very supportive if increasingly demob happy. Copies of innumerable emails and enquiries as to ‘How may filing cabinets do you want?’ …… The first event I attending in an ‘official’ capacity was the St George’s Day joint gathering in – Newcastle upon Tyne. Following the success of the Trafalgar Square event, celebrating the progress with the Licensing Law exemption, it was decided to run a similar event in the North.

Fairport Convention {$David Robinson}, drummer for {$The Cars}, once called the group {$Abba} true "craftsmen", and his words ring appropriate for {$Fairport Convention} on this lovely 35th Anniversary DVD. There are 19 songs covered on 18 tracks exquisitely captured by the very dependable {$Dave Meehan} of {@Secret Films} on February 23, 2003 at The Anvil Theatre in Basingstoke, England. This is the {$Simon Nicol}, {$Dave Pegg}, {$Ric Sanders}, {$Chris Leslie} and {$Gerry Conway} version of the group with appearances by {$Anna Ryder} and {$Vikki Clayton}. The minstrels are in the gallery, as {$Ian Anderson} might say, and this version of {$Fairport Convention} takes {$Jethro Tull}'s more esoteric aspects and play them for all they are worth. It's a truly inviting journey that captivates via the collective mastery of the string, percussive and vocal instruments. A nine page biography written by {$Ian Burgess} is included on the DVD as a bonus, and with the merry-go-round of musicians that have been in this venerable group it is a much needed score card. Some of that information is also played over the ending credits. With three additional vocalists lending and blending harmonies to {$Meet On The Ledge} veteran {$Simon Nicol} has a heavy eight piece unit backing him on this anthemic closer. The DVD doesn't give much in the way of bonus material, though the tracks are isolated if one chooses to randomly view a song. There's also a 32 minute interview with "Peggy", Simon, Chris and interviewer {$Jet Martin}, which is interesting, though the audio quality is low and not reflective of the pristine sound of the concert.

Unfortunately, this included the crucial spell prior to my A' Level exams when I realised the access to a range of my friend's music would be coming to an end. There was only one thing for it and that was to buy a dozen C90 cassette audio-tapes and get recording. Eighteen hours of music recorded from LPs in the summer of 1973: The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Electric Ladyland Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys Jimi Hendrix – In the West Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street Rolling Stones – Get Yer Ya-Yas Out! Simon and Garfunkel – Bookends Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water Paul Simon – Paul Simon Jeff Beck – Truth Allman Brothers – Eat A Peach Led Zeppelin – II Emerson, Lake and Palmer – ELP The Nice – Five Bridges Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home Part of Concert for Bangladesh James Taylor – Sweet Baby James Carole King – Tapestry King Crimson – In the Court of the Crimson King Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother Melanie – Candles In The Rain Francoise Hardy – Sings in English Francoise Hardy – Sings About Love That's a class selection, except ELP, I reckon.

Musikken holder stadig, og gruppen turnerer flittigt overalt i verden. Simon Nicol : sang, akk.
