Fairport Convention {$David Robinson}, drummer for {$The Cars}, once called the group {$Abba} true "craftsmen", and his words ring appropriate for {$Fairport Convention} on this lovely 35th Anniversary DVD. There are 19 songs covered on 18 tracks exquisitely captured by the very dependable {$Dave Meehan} of {@Secret Films} on February 23, 2003 at The Anvil Theatre in Basingstoke, England. This is the {$Simon Nicol}, {$Dave Pegg}, {$Ric Sanders}, {$Chris Leslie} and {$Gerry Conway} version of the group with appearances by {$Anna Ryder} and {$Vikki Clayton}. The minstrels are in the gallery, as {$Ian Anderson} might say, and this version of {$Fairport Convention} takes {$Jethro Tull}'s more esoteric aspects and play them for all they are worth. It's a truly inviting journey that captivates via the collective mastery of the string, percussive and vocal instruments. A nine page biography written by {$Ian Burgess} is included on the DVD as a bonus, and with the merry-go-round of musicians that have been in this venerable group it is a much needed score card. Some of that information is also played over the ending credits. With three additional vocalists lending and blending harmonies to {$Meet On The Ledge} veteran {$Simon Nicol} has a heavy eight piece unit backing him on this anthemic closer. The DVD doesn't give much in the way of bonus material, though the tracks are isolated if one chooses to randomly view a song. There's also a 32 minute interview with "Peggy", Simon, Chris and interviewer {$Jet Martin}, which is interesting, though the audio quality is low and not reflective of the pristine sound of the concert. {$Fairport Convention} has more than a few video tapes and DVDs available and with the decades these musicians have pursued their craft more will no doubt surface. PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. Design Issues with 3D Maps and the Need for 3D Cartographic Design Principles Dave Pegg Abstract Design issues regarding the presentation of geographical information in a th ree- dimensional perspective are varied and complex. This paper looks at some of issues of 3D mapping stemming from its rapid development as a cartographic tool, its growing popularity and accessibility amongst users, and the 3D cartographic principles proposed to manage the design and presentation that are not covered by traditional cartographic principles. Introduction Multimedia cartography has been propelled forward by the rapid technological advances for the capture, manipulation and presentation of geographical data, with most map products now being developed digitally. The quality and accuracy of data capture, data storage & manipulation capabilities, as well as the advancements in software, mean that a cartographer now has the ability to digitally create spatially accurate, detailed and high resolution three-dimensional maps and visualizations. The advent of Digital terrain or elevation models make available the presentation of geographical data in three dimensional space, and allowing precise modelling of not only x and y locations, but the z height creating a three-dimensional landscape. In the case of three-dimensional cartographic mapping, there are many different applications that have been designed for the creation of 3D maps and visualizations, and the development of standards and guidelines in regards to the technical aspects of such models. 3D maps can be done in several different ways, each way creating a different representation of the landscape. 3D maps can be photorealistic, where the landscape is created to match the exact landscape, using techniques of overlaying ortho-photography over a 3D model, or can be “symbolistic”, where the maps are generalized and symbols designed to show object locations and information.

PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum are still going strong. March 2014 sees a new double CD, Inside/Outside, celebrating over forty years of studio and live recordings. In addition the spring will see a new download-only release, Some Long Road, featuring tracks from the band’s 2012 US tour. Alongside this Procol continue to tour many parts of the world, and are considering options on three continents at the moment. You could not be blamed for thinking that, with the monumental success of Procol's first smash hit, the band just stopped there, like so many others. Even the recently-awarded accolade of ‘most- played single of the past seventy-five years’ has not quelled their need to go forward: hence 2014’s new live album. In the past couple of years they have released ten re-mastered CD albums, plus the 2CD anthology Secrets of the Hive (all generally available in Europe, and sourceable on import); their DVDs In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Live at Union Chapel have been widely acclaimed. There’s also a special 4-disc CD/DVD box-set compendium – aptly entitled All this and More – featuring 68 of the band’s many unique compositions: this prompted Classic Rock magazine to observe, ‘it’s small wonder The Who’s Tommy and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be traced to Procol’s influence’. It could be termed a plethora of Procol. The quality of writing and performance has remained Procol Harum’s gold standard through the gradually-mutating line-ups: each participating musician has kept the ideas flowing and prevented Procol from resting on their laurels.
