SANDY DENNY UNDER REVIEW: an Independent Critical Analysis, Limited Collectors Edition
SANDY DENNY UNDER REVIEW: An Independent Critical Analysis, Limited Collectors Edition The difference between a critical analysis of {$Sandy Denny} or {$The Velvet Underground} and {$The Rolling Stones} is that with a lot less information available on this extraordinary singer the audience is more limited. The good news is that this edition of the "Under Review" series actually lives up to the documentary status it claims, and does, indeed, hold one's attention and inform better than the {^Green Day: Under Review 1995-2000 The Middle Years}, which is basically a bunch of critics blowing lots of hot air. It seems with these "DVD/Fanzine" type commentaries that the lesser known the subject matter, the better the critique. Denny is a singer that deserves so much more acclaim and study, and this is an excellent starting point, as is the {$Kate Bush} "Under Review", and even the {$David Bowie} {^Under Review 1976-79 Berlin} analysis which concentrates on his dark but fun period. {$Fairport Convention} fiddler {$Dave Swarbrick}, journeyman {$Martin Carthy}, {$Cat Stevens} drummer {$Gerry Conway} of Denny's band, {$Fotheringay} and {$Pentangle}'s {$John Renbourn} contribute as does {$Fairport Convention} biographer {$Patrick Humphries}. That's the extra effort missing in some of these packages which makes this close to two hour presentation all the more interesting. Perhaps more important than the very decent {$Kate Bush} analysis by the {^Under Review} team, there's a "Limited Collector's Edition" with a cardboard slipcover. It's a very classy presentation and a very important history that deserves shelf space in any good library. -

Design Issues with 3D Maps and the Need for 3D Cartographic Design
Design Issues with 3D Maps and the Need for 3D Cartographic Design Principles Dave Pegg Abstract Design issues regarding the presentation of geographical information in a th ree- dimensional perspective are varied and complex. This paper looks at some of issues of 3D mapping stemming from its rapid development as a cartographic tool, its growing popularity and accessibility amongst users, and the 3D cartographic principles proposed to manage the design and presentation that are not covered by traditional cartographic principles. Introduction Multimedia cartography has been propelled forward by the rapid technological advances for the capture, manipulation and presentation of geographical data, with most map products now being developed digitally. The quality and accuracy of data capture, data storage & manipulation capabilities, as well as the advancements in software, mean that a cartographer now has the ability to digitally create spatially accurate, detailed and high resolution three-dimensional maps and visualizations. The advent of Digital terrain or elevation models make available the presentation of geographical data in three dimensional space, and allowing precise modelling of not only x and y locations, but the z height creating a three-dimensional landscape. In the case of three-dimensional cartographic mapping, there are many different applications that have been designed for the creation of 3D maps and visualizations, and the development of standards and guidelines in regards to the technical aspects of such models. 3D maps can be done in several different ways, each way creating a different representation of the landscape. 3D maps can be photorealistic, where the landscape is created to match the exact landscape, using techniques of overlaying ortho-photography over a 3D model, or can be “symbolistic”, where the maps are generalized and symbols designed to show object locations and information. -
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum Are Still Going Strong
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum are still going strong. March 2014 sees a new double CD, Inside/Outside, celebrating over forty years of studio and live recordings. In addition the spring will see a new download-only release, Some Long Road, featuring tracks from the band’s 2012 US tour. Alongside this Procol continue to tour many parts of the world, and are considering options on three continents at the moment. You could not be blamed for thinking that, with the monumental success of Procol's first smash hit, the band just stopped there, like so many others. Even the recently-awarded accolade of ‘most- played single of the past seventy-five years’ has not quelled their need to go forward: hence 2014’s new live album. In the past couple of years they have released ten re-mastered CD albums, plus the 2CD anthology Secrets of the Hive (all generally available in Europe, and sourceable on import); their DVDs In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Live at Union Chapel have been widely acclaimed. There’s also a special 4-disc CD/DVD box-set compendium – aptly entitled All this and More – featuring 68 of the band’s many unique compositions: this prompted Classic Rock magazine to observe, ‘it’s small wonder The Who’s Tommy and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be traced to Procol’s influence’. It could be termed a plethora of Procol. The quality of writing and performance has remained Procol Harum’s gold standard through the gradually-mutating line-ups: each participating musician has kept the ideas flowing and prevented Procol from resting on their laurels. -
Simon Mcbride and Hugh Cornwell
Waterloo Street, St. Helens WA10 1PX www.citadel.org.uk Box Office: 01744 735436 Press Release: Tuesday 2nd July 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE This week at The Citadel Arts Centre, St Helens Simon McBride and Hugh Cornwell The Citadel Arts Centre will be welcoming Simon McBride on Thursday 4 July and Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers fame on Saturday 6 July 2013. Predicted to be the next Irish blues guitar hero in the footsteps of Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, former Young Guitarist of the Year Simon McBride has undeniable guitar artistry combined with a fine voice and a real knack for creating memorable hooks and great melodies. His latest CD Crossing The Line is a fiery amalgam of guitar skills, songcraft and character-soaked vocals, spinning tales of girls, gambling and corporate avarice. Recorded in Northern Ireland and The USA, mixing of the album was placed in the experienced hands of New York-based Peter Denenberg, the veteran producer and engineer whose CV takes in everyone from Deep Purple to the Spin Doctors and Robert Cray. Rewind to the early-’90s, and you didn’t have to squint to spot future greatness in the unassuming kid from Belfast, who picked up his first guitar at ten and eschewed formal lessons to bend his fingers around the music of Free, Jeff Beck and Hendrix. Aged 15, Simon won Guitarist’s hotly-contested Young Guitarist of the Year competition in a Wembley Conference Centre showdown, and at 16, he turned pro, leaving education behind to wow the world as a hired gun in projects than ranged from metal with Sweet Savage, to R&B and soul with ex-Commitments vocalist Andrew Strong. -

'Across the Evening Sky': the Late Voices of Sandy Denny, Judy Collins
© Copyrighted Material Chapter 9 ‘Across the Evening Sky’: The Late Voices of Sandy Denny, Judy Collins and Nina Simone Richard Elliott In 2006, shortly before her 67th birthday, the American singer-songwriter Judy Collins undertook a tour of Australia and New Zealand, her first visit to the region in forty years. A number of press features and interviews accompanied Collins’s visit, several of which were still featured at the top of the ‘Press’ section of the artist’s website at the time of writing this chapter. One of the features, entitled ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes?’ after one of Collins’s 1960s hits, presented a reflection on the artist’s career alongside observations on age and assertions of continued vitality.1 Another, entitled ‘Gem of a Voice Shines On’, described some of Collins’s most successful performances, including her recording of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’. ‘Its harpsichord tinkling has dated’, wrote the journalist, ‘but Collins’ voice, warm and wise beyond its years, renders the song timeless.’2 I use these examples because they provide a foretaste of the themes of age, time and experience with which I wish to engage in this chapter, as well as a reference to the song upon which I will base my observations. The first aspect to note is the way in which an artist of Collins’s longevity can afford to leave her website out of date in terms of publicity; the fact that the featured stories are seven years old at the time of access matters little when considering an artist whose performing career spans more than five decades. -

May 2016 FREE
Issue 58 May 2016 FREE upporting ocal rts & erformers Last month ended on yet another sad musical note as Prince left this plane, if indeed he ever inhabited the same one as us mere mortals. Certainly not everyone's cup of Darjeeling but few could deny his supranatural talents whether in writing, playing, performing or inspiring; he was often cited as one of the most underrated guitarists, probably only though because he was so good at almost everything else. Tis a cliché but his like will certainly not be seen again: Sometimes It Snows In April indeed. MAY2016 On a brighter note April also saw a record-breaking (not literally hopefully) Record Store Day as local shops outdid themselves, despite some unfortunates queueing outside Rise in Worcester having to contend with snow flurries. Originally from Australia, he came to the UK in the mid-1960s to work on the traditional folk circuit, and made an obscure and run- of-the-mill traditional folk solo album in 1966, Overlander. From late 1967 to late 1969, the singer-guitarist was in Eclection, a little- known British folk-rock group that made recordings with Elektra. Lucas became romantically involved with Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny in the late 1960s, and together the pair formed Fotheringay, who made a good folk-rock album in 1970. Despite the group's considerable promise, it folded after that sole LP, when Denny, the biggest talent in the band by far, left for a solo career. Lucas joined Fairport Convention, who at that point had been shorn of all their original members, in mid-1972, with Denny (whom Lucas married in 1973) rejoining the band in early 1974.
